A friend of my son’s told him that you can send cards into teams and they’ll sometimes have the player sign it and send it back.  Anyone tried this or is his friend full of shit?

Uh i did back in like 1996 lol. Got a Vin Baker back, but pretty sure they just used a stamp and stamped his name on it.

I wouldn't send anything worth a shit, but for a kid they may do it.

If you google it, you’ll find some groups that say who they have / have not had success with. I’ve never tried it…kids have good luck though at spring training and fan fests.

Yes, this works, but probably 50/50 if you get your card signed by an equipment manager.

If you are interested in retired players, there are websites/groups of people who send cards directly to players homes and that seems to be more successful.  The addresses are published along with success rates, turnaround times and fees players charge for this. Most are $10-$20 for each card, but this is for Hall of Famers like Ryne Sandburg, Wade Boggs, Andre Dawson, Mike Mussina, etc.  Nolan Ryan charges $75 I think. They may have addresses of current players as well, but they’ll be heading to Spring Training shortly.
I did this back as a kid with marginal success and just stumbled across this again with a suggested group on Facebook a week ago.  I have auto requests to Rollie Fingers and Sonny Jurgensen going out tomorrow, so we’ll see how that goes.
Search TTM (through the mail) Autographs and you’ll get all the info you need.

This is correct. Also some old timers have foundations that have pricing I’m on their sites

I pulled this chasing Bijan this week.

Here is a comp, which is insane to me   This is the photo variation of same card and it’s a bookend (10/10).

Thoughts on best place to maximize value?  I am definitely selling now but on what platform?  Should I grade first?

Dumb question amnesty....Old man here, got a bunch of old shit (late 70s - late 80s baseball, basketball, football). Several full sets.

Is it better to peel off the high priced singles, get those graded, and sell those, or sell the full sets? From what I've seen on various sites, the singles sell higher, but not sure. Or does it vary based on the cards/sets/etc.?

Also, most of the shit I've seen on ebay is based on PSA grading.  But SGC is much cheaper to get graded, but that grading not as well respected?

Recommend looking at eBay (you can search and filter on sold) or 130 point to find out what the top rookies / cards sold for in those years. Depending on the rookie class, it might be better to sell those off individually. If you’re looking to move the cards in volume vs piece by piece, you could sell the sets or consign them.

Show some of the top rookies and or years!

I'd set aside and possible grade the top HOFs. Are you trying to sell things off or just continue to keep? If you are keeping them you can grade but other than protecting the card I'm not sure that matters. If you do decide to grade I'd go with PSA as that is the best and most respected one right now. Late 80's sets in baseball are practically worthless outside of a few cards and even then it's depending on the set. 89 Topps traded Griffey is only slightly valuable as it's the UD version that's what everyone wants.

As was mentioned above post some picks!

Not that my opinion matters but if I am buying a graded card i am 95% looking for PSA

The other 5% I would take a Beckett graded, but i rarely look for anything other than PSA because they are the standard in my eyes....at least the past few years and currently.

SGC may be cheaper and may grade "easier" on older cards, but I am PSA backer.

Honestly I will not even give a SGC card a second look.

Like i said just my .02 others may not be as snobby as me

I’m the same way. PSA or die

I’ll do both, but PSA for higher value cards. I do like the way the SGC tux slab looks and will use it for a quick grade and move or for my kids cards. They’re the clear number 2 now over Beckett…but a Beckett pristine trumps all (Beckett 9.5 equivalent of a 10).
