I'm still checking out UNC message boards. Some Tarheel fans think that Mack will do the right thing and leave on his own volition for the good to the program. It's just crazy they still think that.

This is a different type of debacle entirely, but I still think you're right. I imagine right now he's hoping to win 3 more so he can say "They fought their guts out and made a bowl. We have a great recruiting class and lots of room for improvement and we'll be in better shape to compete next year." Or some other Mack stuff similar to that and try to continue his personal goals.

There's another part of me that thinks this is such a prolonged embarrassment that he might want out. The stink at that program right now is loud. Those stands looked empty, too, from the shots I saw of the game. It seems like a really uncomfortable place to be.

Has he blamed the hurricane, yet?

I dunno if Mack has the mindset to be able to hang 'em up, smile, wave, and bask in whatever good will is left.

Reminds me of one of Ron White's lines: "They told me I had the right to remain silent, but I didn't have the ability."

Mack knows that the "right thing" is to admit that being a football Head Coach is beyond the faculties he still has, at his age, and urge the 'Heels to start a youth movement. He does know this, but I suspect his ego will get the better of him, and despite pleas and good intentions from everyone around him, he'll make them fire him.

I kinda wish he'll go on his own, dignity intact. I kinda feel like I could forgive him for the way he left here.

Kinda, but... no.

Fuck Mack

"Mac Brown Mbah Mbanwei" has stabbed a fellow 18 y/o Manor high school student.

https://www.kxan.com/news/local/manor/atcems-one-student-dead-after-alleged-stabbing-at-manor-senior-high-school/

Crazy.
Stupid kids.

An 18-year-old student was charged with murder after a fellow Manor Senior High School student died from a stabbing Tuesday, Manor officials said.

Manor Police said the victim, Darrin Loving, 18, was “stabbed in the chest.” The suspect, identified as Mac Brown Mbah Mbanwei, 18, was arrested and charged with murder and was being held at the Travis County Jail. Police said the suspect used a kitchen knife as the weapon. The stabbing did not happen in a classroom, according to police.

Police believe the suspect and victim knew each other.

Officers were dispatched to the high school, located at 14832 N FM 973, for a reported aggravated assault, the release said.

A Manor ISD spokesperson said the stabbing happened after an altercation between two students.

Up 14-3 at halftime in Tallahassee.  Mack Brown is 0-11 all time against FSU.  At least if it he holds on, no one nationally is watching nor gives a shit.  ACCN.

Thank goodness they are historically bad. He would most likely get beat. I’m rooting for free shoes.

We all know what Mack is doing, I can’t blame him.

I also don’t really see the point in firing him, they should’ve only given him 3 or 4 year contract and made a good Will Muschamp style plan to move on.

How many years left on his deal? Don’t believe he will be there 2026 right?

Yikes!  Contract runs thru ‘27 at $5M per.  NC is screwed.

Buyout is probably tiny

True.

Mack Brown buyout

In the event he’s fired without cause, Brown would be due an amount equal to the sum of any remaining unpaid base salary payments.

As of December 1, 2024, that figure would be $2,812,500.

You can't say he's being inconsistent, that is for sure.  Always the same, always about more money.  That famous FUPM picture is the first thing I think of.   I. noticed he has 288 wins, so there's that.  If he were to somehow be able to stay for the duration of the contract he could eclipse 300.

Peanuts for UNC.

Who do they have in mind to replace Mack? Chadwell?

I appreciate mocking Mack Brown's behavior at the end of his time at Texas as much as the next guy.

That said, North Carolina isn't Texas. They have nowhere near the expectations for their football program that Texas has. Nor should they. Outside of inventing the forward pass and Lawrence Taylor, Mack Brown is about the best thing UNC can claim in terms of breathing life into their program. UNC isn't even complete shit this season. They're 6-4, above their historic mean, and they close out with 5-5 BC and 5-5 NC State plus a middling bowl. They could finish 6-7, but they could also finish 9-4. Anything near the latter and their fans are happy.

He could eclipse 300 next season. He has 3 more games to coach this season and then a full and weak schedule in 2025. In the OOC, they host TCU, at Charlotte, Richmond, at UCF. That's anywhere between 2-2 and 4-0 with the latter being as likely as anything. In conference is Charmin soft, with only hosting Clemson being a visible, top of the ACC challenge. It's not hard to see them going 10-4/9-4 if they figure out QB. UNC is recruiting better than anyone in the ACC besides the top 3-4 teams.

I agree that NC’s expectations aren’t the same as ours. But to me, it’s about entitlement. Mack acts like he hasn’t been appropriately compensated for his work. He’s been paid millions and millions of dollars and mostly been celebrated by the fans of Texas and North Carolina. He gets way more credit nationally for his coaching than he should, and he still believes he should decide when it’s time to retire, not the people who have paid him millions.

This isn’t Pop Warner football and a Coach Emeritus (which is what Mack became here) is not deserving of millions of dollars. Go catch intramurals, brother!

Just glad he’s their problem now.

He handled it better than Will Muschamp did….just sayin’

Mack was reportedly going to step down after the 2009 title game and turn it over to Muschamp, but he decided to stay after the loss to Alabama, and then after a shitty 5-7 season, he didn't want to leave on a losing note, Will had no idea when he might ever take his place, and Florida offered him the head coaching job.  Not sure how else Muschamp should've played it.

Honestly not sure if Mack was ever going to voluntarily leave.  I’m no insider but apparently he and sally weren’t exactly happy about the attention and credit  Will was getting

Will Muschamp’s head coaching career has been an unmitigated disaster and likely to never resurface.

Not saying anything would have been different…but you have to wonder if it would be different if he spent a couple more years in the HCIW position…

Yeah, that's another discussion.  We didn't know this at the time when we were pumped about his HCIW designation, but he's turned out to be more of a Charlie Strong/maybe a coordinator kind of coach.  I'm not sure if he stuck it out at Texas a couple more years and then took over for Mack we and Will would be in any different places.

Charlie strong comparison is a bit harsh.  Maybe more David McWilliams, based on his Florida record.  A couple of mediocre winning seasons.  He also had one 11 win season putting Florida in the Sugar bowl that year where they lost to Louisville coached by Charlie Strong.  Shit, never mind, just forget everything I just said.
