North Carolina coach Mack Brown will not return to the Tar Heels next season, the school announced Tuesday.

Brown, 73, on Monday said he intended to return, although he had not yet held any discussions about his future with athletic director Bubba Cunningham.

He will coach in Saturday's game against rival NC State, and no decision has been made about the postseason.

"Mack Brown has won more games than any football coach in UNC history, and we deeply appreciate all that he has done for Carolina Football and our University,'' Cunningham said in a statement.

As the guitars picked up, Bubba continued on by crooning "Closing time, you don't have to go home, but you can't stay here"

Imagine if he stayed at his ESPN gig. He'd probably be where Nick Saban is right now but instead he's getting fired after telling his boss "you can't fire me".

I can just imagine Mack on GameDay with that idiot McAfee and Mack starts clutching his pearls every time McAfee says “damn” and “hell” and then excuses himself from the set when he sees a vulgar sign from the crowd.

Football must be all he has (or so he thinks).  Shit, he's 73 years old.  Man, how much $$ is he sitting on?

He turned us around immediately after he showed up, and got us a National Championship.  He deserves all that credit.  Hope he eventually comes back to DKR for some mid-game ceremony before he kicks the bucket.

Why would UNC want this distraction for a rivalry game? Maybe it's all the motivation they can muster for another disappointing, underachieving season?

I presume they're letting him coach the game based on Mack's statement, so it's probably better this way. Instead of a cloud of uncertainty hovering over the game, just do it and let Mack and the players do their whole "win one for the Gipper" send coach out on a win routine.

edit: Might motivate more fans to show up and support the team, too.

A 20th anniversary of the 2005 team will be appropriate next year, me thinks.

He was never leaving UNC by choice. Just like Texas.

I don't know the ins and outs of his contract with NC, but generally speaking, if he makes them fire him he gets a penalty/buyout/whatever, but if he quits voluntarily, he leaves that money on the table. I suspect the firing was both real and negotiated.
