I don't know the ins and outs of his contract with NC, but generally speaking, if he makes them fire him he gets a penalty/buyout/whatever, but if he quits voluntarily, he leaves that money on the table. I suspect the firing was both real and negotiated.

For reference, he makes around $5mm in total per year.

As per this link: https://www.fayobserver.com/story/sports/college/football/2024/09/28/mack-brown-north-carolina-contract-buyout-details-clause-tar-heels-fired-years/75418347007/

In the event he’s fired without cause, Brown would be due an amount equal to the sum of any remaining unpaid base salary payments.
As of December 1, 2024, that figure would be $2,812,500.

I suspect his agent could have negotiated an "I will quit at the end of the season" deal worth at least $3mm.  But, that ain't Mack.

I don't hate him, the BCS title year was one of the best years of my entire life and the Texas Longhorns were an enormous part of it. I just recognize what he did, he destroyed his legacy. I don't want our second most accomplished coach in Texas history to go out like a bum, but he did. He should have stuck to College Gameday, he was good at it. Now he doesn't even have that, Saban took it from him. Dude's ego destroyed what he built, and it's sad but also funny to see it happen telegraphed so perfectly.

Mack changed the classic saying “You can’t fire me, I quit!” And turned it into, “You can fire me, I’m not gonna quit!”

I can just imagine Mack on GameDay with that idiot McAfee and Mack starts clutching his pearls every time McAfee says “damn” and “hell” and then excuses himself from the set when he sees a vulgar sign from the crowd.

I actually think if Mack didn't leave, we wouldn't have been stuck with McAfee in the first place. Mack is clown enough that he'd eagerly take Corso's headgear tradition and they wouldn't have turned to McAfee to try and "energize" the set. So double fuck him.

Im actually surprised he didn’t retire first. It really shows what type of person he is. I understand him not resigning at Texas. He thought he could turn it around. But NC was a retirement job. He’s 73 for Christ’s sake.

I'm not surprised. Mack Brown has always insisted upon himself.

I have it on good authority that Saban was on a private plane out of chapel hill. Further, it's clear that this is not over by any stretch of the imagination, as Mack Brown has been confirmed to be recruiting in Florida and could not be reached for comment. Sources close to the hall of fame coach believe he will be available after the team banquet where he intends to throw a hissy fit.

Too soon

I can't bring myself to shit on Mack Brown after drinking myself through the end of Fred Akers-David McWilliams-John Mackovic era's and he resurrecting Texas football, but it's a fucking shame he had to be carried out in a pine box from both places instead of exiting as a legend.

i’m in the never ‘hate mack camp’. nicest guy ever, was lucky to meet him several times in normal environments

easily the 2nd greatest UT head coach. He made winning an auto 8 games a year at UT look easy. Missed on too many qb prospects his last years here, but the 2004 and 2005 seasons were historic. The best UT teams in my lifetime and it’s a big gap between #2 and #3.

yeah, they owe him another $2.8M to have to fire him... twice now he's put his self interest above those of the program and kids he coaches. No problem with his tactic, but yeah, I'm going to rank his character down a few pegs given how much those institutions and kids have given him.

I don't disagree about anything associated to the points here except that the situation at UNC is different. The UNC boards feel an element of trapped, but they're not actively demanding an alternative. As long as he keeps winning and going to bowls, which he mostly does, they're likely to let him putt around the facilities and bitch and whine as the insecure bitch that we know he is.

welp

Wolken goes for the throat on Brown in that article. No pussyfooting around there and it's a good read.

holy shit

"If Brown really believes his purpose in life isn’t to win football games but to impart life lessons and inspire teenagers to do great things in life, there are multiple outlets for him that don’t require finishing ninth in the ACC or collecting a $5 million annual salary."

I hate that he stayed here long enough to badly damage the program. He wasn't working hard in those last few years. He hamstrung our recruiting because he would not let our coaches recruit players unless he had watched the player's film, but he wouldn't watch the film the coaches sent him.

He was enjoying himself a lot and working a little. The coaches were pissed off over it and the team's performance suffered because we were signing Lazy Mack Specials. That's why it took so long to rebuild. He tore the place apart before we pushed him out the door. Glad NC didn't allow it to get worse.

You can't rebuild something you slowly tore down in the first place.

I didn't hate Mack. I wanted to wish him well. But the intervening years have shown the true prophecy in the immortal words of texlarry, "I'm stunned. I'm pissed. It's Mack Brown."

From his "nice guy"act being just that -- an act, to the poor decisions he made prior to the 2004 season, to the bad decisions he made after 2009... That MNC in 05 has more to do with Dick Tomey's all-too-brief influence than anything Mack did right. Remember that Mack didn't even want Vince; he had to be convinced by Brewster to do it, and after that, they had to lose a lot of games before Gerg would start calling plays that worked to his strengths.

Even our OL in '05 was lightning in a bottle. We had an OL coach that could recruit but couldn't develop in Nunez, replaced by one who could develop but couldn't recruit in McWhorter; 2005 was McWhorter having had a few years training up Nunez's guys.

And outside of those years, you saw Texas doing less with more at best; in the waning years, he was doing less with less. The times were MOSTLY frustrating. Even our frustrations with Sark now pale in comparison to what we had to live with back then.

What y'all like is the myth of Mack Brown, colored by forgetfulness of the bad and over emphasis on the good.

No. I remember 2002-2009. I remember two Rose Bowl victories, a Fiesta Bowl victory, and some fun at the expense of Nebraska, LSU, and A&M. I remember him telling his players in 2005 that he didn't want the championship to be the most important thing they ever did. I remember remarkably clutch special teams, from kickers to blocked kicks. I remember beating Nebraska in the snow off the foot of Ryan Bailey. I remember Colt, Shipley, and Quan destroying defenses. I think, like all of us, Mack Brown was flawed. But I don't think everything positive about him was an act or mere rose tinted glasses.

You aren't remembering those years well enough. Like what was our record vs OU during that time?

I say this with all sincerity: I hope to fucking god Sark knocks Mack down to #3. Shit, I hope he knocks DKR down to #2. I'm ready to go on an historic tear.

There were good times, but there were also a lot of blown dumb shit.

2000-2004 RRSO

His entire approach to Red River and acting like a gaping pussy. "Scared to death" awww shucks grandpa we'll give it our best try, attitude.

2001 Big 12 Championship

2007 Kansas St

2009 Not giving Garrett Gilbert playing time for more in game experience.

RG3 recruitment

Overreacting to Alabama loss and trying to go pro style power run

Telling recruits to look around when he knew it was over.

There are more, but that's what I have off the top of my head.

Mack gave us 4 very good to great years that we haven't enjoyed since 2009.

It's hard for me to hate him, but I don't wanna see us erect any statues for him or gainfully employ him again.

2006 Kansas St stung more than Jordy Nelson’s 2007 game. But agreed

2006 Kansas State was just lot of bad luck, though. Colt goes out and Snead almost leads us back to victory. Had Colt not got hurt, I think we win that game, which sets Texas up at #3 with Michigan and OSU in front at #2 and #1 a week before their matchup.

Playing what-if, Teddy Ginn Jr. fucked Texas up in 06, and he got hurt in the first play of the game in the BCS title game celebrating his TD, which lead to OSU getting blown out. Texas had lost to OSU earlier, but imagine them without Ginn somehow.

hugely unpopular opinion: i hated (still hate) mack brown’s locker room post game speech after the NC. hated it. it was wholly emblematic of why he needed literally the greatest player and winner in college football history (plus the greatest recruiting class ever) to finally win his first *conference* title of his career; emblematic of why more ruthless coaches (like bowden and stoops) would own him; emblematic of why his teams were so soft until VY made mack brown get the fuck out of the way and let him take over.

mack was always so goddamn concerned, or really obsessed, with everyone being great people and fathers and neighbors and sons that it’s led to him wildly underachieving as a head coach who’s one of the all time great recruiters. his team just won the greatest game of all time and all he’s thinking about is downplaying that accomplishment, and instead focusing on how everybody needs to have character and be great men and great community leaders and fathers in the future. totally fucking tone deaf, and 100% emblematic of why he didn’t win nearly as much as he should have. i think he’s a great guy, but his obsession with everyone being great people and inability to be ruthless as a leader held back some amazingly talented teams from reaching their goals and potential.

I hate to say it, but I don't remember his speech at all.  Too drunk, too happy jumping all over the place I guess...one of the greatest moments in my life.

Mack's final year in Austin was pretty funny in hindsight. Beat Kansas State after losing every game to them for a decade. Beat #12 Oklahoma while unranked led by Derp McCoy. Win enough conference games to have the last game of the season be the de facto Big 12 title game. We put so much outside pressure on Mack that he had to hide behind Joe Jamail. We float around the idea of tearing down Jamail's statue Saddam Hussein style. Joe goes to Texas Monthly and calls us Al Qaeda. Good times!
