My post was about national championships. And i agree, the struggles against OU caused the lack of conference championships. I never said otherwise.

You didn’t say that.  But if you want to move the goal posts, we played for a mythical NC in 1983 and also 1977 (just outside your 20 year range).  I don’t even count the cold day in Dallas against Miami as one.

You’re further making my point though.  All that talent and great years and Mack could only get to two NC games?   So, shitty teams in the 20 years before Mack could just about get to the same place with less?  And again, OU had a lot to do with that.  Texas beats OU > Texas wins Big XII > Texas likely plays for NC.  Well, unless Texas loses to Colorado.  I mean, how can that not be clear?

We had the best team in the country in different years (2005, 2009) and IMO 2008 as well. A few breaks and Mack has 3 nattys and is considered the 2nd greatest coach of this generation (Saban of course #1).

Yes Mack was the only coach that had bad luck

Ya, idk wtf that guy was talking about? When Royal left Texas I wasn’t even alive, I have no idea what the details were. Did he not leave on his own?

I have no idea what point you're making. I've never said Mack was perfect. I said I refuse to hate our second greatest coach ever. You can be mad that our program didn't achieve the heights you hoped for or you can enjoy what it did accomplish. Btw, the reason you had those aspirations is because of the standard Mack set his first 12 years as our head coach. It is just ridiculous to ignore that.

Bullshit. It took us a long time to rebuild because we had idiots running Belmont who hired back to back dildos for head coaches. It's not like Strong and Herman found success after their time in austin. When your coaching staff is full of clowns, expect a circus.

Why not both? Mack tore it all down before he left.

Did Switzerland really have a losing record to Texas?

Barry Switzer had a winning record against Texas as did Bud Wilkinson and Bob Stoops. However,  Coach Royal was 12-7-1 vs OU. Coach Akers was 5-4-1. Coach McWilliams was 3-2 and Mackovic was 3-2-1.   Mack was 7-9 vs OU with 4 very bad losses/

BTW,  Mack once said that beating OU was like beating your best friend. Greg Davis agreed. That sent me into a rage. He also called UT fans a bunch of wife beating alcoholics after the 2002 OU game. This occurred on the 1300 The Zone Show with Craig Way. He was never forced to apologize for it.

People who dog Mack Brown are morons.

He was 158-48 here ( 77%)

Won a national championship and played for another.

Coached a Heisman winner, who by the way would have never come back if it wasn’t for Mack being the coach.

Oh…and he is a member of the hall of fame.

Shut the fuck up.

You sound so fucking stupid.

Hi Mack.  Was it hard not having time to sabotage North Carolina Football on the way out like you did at Texas?  Asking for a friend.

Just tagging on.

I am not saying his tenure here was perfect and, it certainly went downhill at the end and I was glad he decided to move on, however, people who criticize his work here are just flat out wrong.

He is number 7 on the list of all time wins by the way.

Look no further than the coaches before him (after DKR) and those after him.

Shit, if social media existed in the mid to late 60’s coach Royal would have never been here to win the championship in 69.

The fans would have run him out of town after those seasons in 65 and 67.

Remember Mack had to be convinced to recruit Vince and couldn't be convinced to recruit Andrew Luck because of Garrett Gilbert.

* Mack also didn’t want RGIII, offered Manziel as a DB but not QB, and chose Tyrone Swoopes (who led his 2A team to a 1-10 record) over JT Barrett.

Mack was reactionary in recruiting and game strategy, having to lose hard and see others have sustained success before adopting change. W/L record aside, the best thing he did was reset culture during his first couple years. Had he been replaced with a better X’s and O’s coach in 2003 or 2004, Texas may well have had a better record 2005 and beyond. Given the talent gap between VY and Colt, I’m often more impressed with what Colt did for 4 seasons. Once Colt was finished, so was the Mack Brown regime. But Mack didn’t want to go, so we spun around with years of switching out coordinators and watching OU dominate as we fought for bowl eligibility. When it was clear he was finally being fired, he torched the program on his way out the door. That salting of the earth erased any sense of thanks or good will I might have had for him with the passage of time.

Mack Brown is a weird fucker with an odd legacy.

Even if it was in spite of himself, he did manage to put one of the baddest teams ever to play college football on the field in 2005. And a few other pretty damn good teams.

And yet he also was responsible for all the other mind boggling gaping vag shit well chronicled in this thread.

Strange combo when you think about it. Not many have managed to accomplish that wide of a gap between highs and lows. Jimbo Fisher comes to mind.

Larry fucking Coker coached and won a title with the most loaded roster of all time and went to back to back titles. Mack Brown was a phenomenal recruiter, a mediocre X’s and O’s guy, and a terrible staff assembler. 2005 won by straight up overwhelming their opponents with their talent and dumb ass Greg Davis getting the fuck out of the way.

Get a fucking grip. Did Mack deserve to be fired? yeah, every time, including this time. Did Mack Brown also have a fucking awesome run? Yeah. Both things can be true and one doesn't have to get thrown in the trash because you are fucking stupid.

Thank you.

I am pretty sure I am on the short list of people here that have been watching Texas Football since 1960 when I was five years old.

Doesn’t mean I know shit but I have seen a lot and Mack’s tenure here was one of the best in my 70 years of life.

I feel very good about Sark but I am sure when he is done here many of the morons that exist today will be dogging him too.

Had Mack decided to move on after the 2010 BCS National Championship Game, he would have been hailed as the coach who saved the UT football program from mediocrity. He returned UT back to its rightful prominence in college football.. His mission was accomplished that night in Pasadena. I am sure that almost everyone on this board would have wanted a statue of him outside DKR.  However, Mack made the mistake of hanging on and the program fell into disarray. His narcissistic behavior behavior would not allow him to do the right thing the program. I    will always be grateful to Mack for restoring the UT progra(that was the easy part) but cannot totally forgive him for the way he left.

Erin sounds nice. Rules.

She wasn't nice. She was sorta fun, and she was not the sort of person you kept photos of even if you hadn't burned them all in a trash fire after pissing over them. A western Pennsylvania 6 at best.

Oddly enough, in a weak (and very drunk) moment I googled to see what she'd done with herself (hoping, of course, for dying of face AIDS) and discovered to my horror that some poor sap actually put a ring on it (I hope he gets tested for VD regularly) and she's actually working in some admin job of some kind at the university now.

That should've been my first hint that God had given up all hope on humanity and had abandoned the world to the devil.

I don't think anyone's claiming that. What people are claiming is that they are burying their heads in the sand about the very bad stuff because they happened to enjoy 2004-2009. The opposite of what you're attackin' here.

He’s always been a little bitch. It’s just easier to tolerate when he’s winning 10 games a year.

So in your fantasy world there would be no “bad stuff” at all…only good ?

Son, you have a lot to learn in your life.

I am guessing you are 35 years old or less.

You are shitty at reading comprehension and should feel bad about yourself. Go stand in the corner and put your nose in the circle.

Every year I was on campus and years afterward as a fresh alum, "my team" was one of the best in the country and could beat any team in any given week.

Very few UT cohorts, or any other program's cohort, have the luxury of that feeling.

For that, I'll be forever grateful to ole Mack.

This gets brought up every time someone says Greg Davis is ass. Let’s not forget the change in football and it being more offense oriented. It’s no longer 3 yards and a cloud of dust.

When we evaluate recruits, we often discuss ceiling and floor. One could say Mack was a high ceiling low floor coach during his Texas tenure and that he took seasons off. He did have some explosive seasons.

Alcoholic I’ll own. When has Mack been better than 50% on anything?
