The question was asked "why did Fred Akers brought in to replace Darrell Royal?"  The main reason was because of his earlier ties to Texas football.  He was considered to be one of Royal's better recruiters. Matter of fact.  Coach Akers recruited a lot of the 1967 UT class that is still considered to be one of the best in the school's history. (The myth that Royal was just recruiting players to keep them from competing against him started  with this class).Coach Akers was considered to be an up and coming coach that would fit the new image of UT. He also brought in a new updated concept of defense to the equation. He also hailed from a school that absolutely hates Texas(Arkansas). While he was friends and former teammate of Barry Switzer, Coach Akers understood the meaning of the OU game.  He would never invite Barry Switzer to speak with any Teas team like Mack Brown did. one time. When Mack did that, it was like him spitting on Coach Royal's face. He knew how Coach Royal felt about Switzer.

Not say this correct but my recollection is Lorene Roger’s wanted Akers because his youth and image (as you mention) in hopes of him being another Royal.  Royal wanted his longtime assistant coach Campbell to succeed him and when Akers was chosen it created hard feelings.  Akers was able to initially over come it  by having an undefeated regular season lead by Earl Campbell but badly lost to Notre Dame in Cotton Bowl and finishing #2 in 1977.  Akers later lost to Georgia in Cotton Bowl which cost him a NC, and embarrassed by Iowa and lost to Air Force in bowl game his final season.  I’m sure there were other significant events but those are what mostly standout in my memory for his demise.

Well, there is a fine piece of information here.

The best way to make errybody completely forget about the coach you just fired is to hire a GOAT, instead of hiring Corch Potatohead.

Who knew?

Lord those 3 years are seared in my brain forever. just an unbelievable clusterfuck of incompetence from Univ President on down.

"Great time for me to get out; this isn't the game I signed up for," Brown said in his final postgame news conference. "I'm leaving it better than I found it."

If I asked Chat GPT for a fake quote from Mack Brown about getting fired it could never come up with anything as Mack Brown as this.

At the level UNC historically recruits at, can you imaging the 3 star boners that are raging right now because they are gonna be coached up by Belichick? I wonder if he'll turn over the roster a la Deion and immediately dump a lot of that dead weight off the team. You gotta believe he's gonna have better options interested in the tarheels now, if only to say they were coached by Belichick.

So a guy and a staff that has never recruited HS players are going to go to UNC and somehow just rev that program up? I just can’t picture BB dealing with an entitled 18 year old.

This IMO is a terrible hire (if it comes to fruition).

He’s just there for the pussy.
