It's official.  Mariupol has fallen.

Soldiers defending the Ukrainian city of Mariupol laid down their arms at the sprawling steel plant that served for weeks as their final redoubt, ending months of bloody battle for the industrial port that has become a symbol of Russia’s invasion and Ukraine’s resistance.

More than 260 soldiers were taken to Russian-controlled territory on Tuesday morning after Ukraine announced the end of combat operations in Mariupol. Video footage released by Russia’s Defense Ministry appeared to show the men being patted down and escorted to waiting buses. Some were on stretchers, some wrapped in bloodied bandages, and many were gaunt after weeks of surviving on minimal rations.

Wonder if there are healthy soldiers who are going to stay hidden in the lower levels.

Mariupol defenders swung way the hell above their weight class, and they helped keep Kyiv free, and helped with the pressure around Kharkiv, since they tied up a shit-ton of Russian troops at times who weren't able to get north.

Big resupply in motion...probably room for some nice hardware and some newly tailored pants for Zelensky. Current set is still chaffing his nuts and the man needs some room to breath.

Wonder if it's tied to this.  Has to be.

https://www.defensenews.com/pentagon/2022/05/17/pentagons-high-level-group-to-aid-ukraine-is-rooted-in-iraq-and-afghanistan-fight/

Quote

The Pentagon has modeled a new high-level team focused on rushing military aid to Ukraine on the group it used to speed supplies to troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria, according to a memo obtained by Defense News and sources familiar with the matter.

Pentagon leaders several weeks ago quietly convened the group ― co-chaired by the Pentagon’s No. 2 civilian and military leaders ― to cut through its notoriously unwieldy bureaucracy. Called the Senior Integration Group-Ukraine, its mandate is to hustle military equipment to Ukraine from its own stocks, replenish those stocks, coordinate aid with NATO, support partner nations and address humanitarian issues.

Quote

The SIG-Ukraine is adapted from the little known Warfighter Senior Integration Group, which the Pentagon launched in the middle of the war on terror to answer the urgent needs of battlefield commanders. The Ukraine group’s predecessor rapidly fielded surveillance aerostats, working dogs and ballistic underwear used to protect troops from roadside bombs and much more, according to former officials.

“Effective immediately, I am establishing a Senior Integration Group-Ukraine (SIG-Ukraine), to focus on facilitating the provision of lethal and non-lethal support to enable Ukraine to more effectively defend itself against Russian aggression,” Deputy Defense Secretary Kathleen Hicks, one of the group’s co-chairs, said in her May 11 memo authorizing the group, which was already at work.

Quote

The new group is functionally co-chaired by Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment Bill LaPlante and the Joint Staff’s director of operations, Lt. Gen James Mingus, as stand-ins for Hicks and Joint Chiefs vice chairman Adm. Christopher Grady. Undersecretary of Defense for Policy Colin Kahl, Comptroller Mike McCord, U.S. European Command’s leadership and top armed services acquisition chiefs are also in the group.

The SIG Ukraine is meant to respond to needs identified by U.S. European Command and handles items procured under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative. “The SIG addresses items such as the latest operational needs, and resolves issues impeding the urgent material and logistics requirements that is required to support EUCOM and support to Ukraine,” said Jessica Maxwell, a Pentagon spokeswoman.

Trophy Russian BTR-80 in the Kharkiv region.

🇮🇳 India has suspended talks with Russia on the purchase of 10 Ka-31 helicopters due to doubts about Moscow's ability to fulfill arms orders due to the war in Ukraine, - the Ministry of Defense of India.

We thank the Czech Republic 🇨🇿 for helping Ukraine 🇺🇦 in the war.

Russia has been interfering in the lives of free states for a long time. The Russians believed that foreign countries could be occupied with impunity.

We will take revenge for that!

Those Orlans are a horrible choice for dropping grenades. Quadcopters can hover, Orlans can't. They have to continually move forward to generate lift. If they try to slow down to aim, they will stall. Further, they are designed for taking footage from high up. They are not maneuverable at all and the aerodynamics on the Orlan suck. Very poor answer to the Ukrainian drones.

I know yall hate that Uke techno, but this is me watching Bayraktar videos.

At first the techno annoyed me, but it's grown on me as the Ukrainians have continued to kick Russia's ass. Now, I dig it and am kind of sad when there isn't any.

This is a complete spoiled brat move. Showing the “we hate Ukrainians more than we love Russians living in eastern Ukraine” ethos.

Good. Let them waste their time doing that. I’ve seen steel mills taken down in WV and PA. It’s no mean feat. Takes a lot of time and manpower.

Beets and Pumpernickel only go so far

But if you have Pastrami, Pastrami on Pumpernickel with some Provolone or Havarti, heated with some German mustard is pretty darn good. Oh, and cracked pepper potato chips. I'm not a sauerkraut fan, though.

COUNTERPOINT
They'll half-ass the destruction project, like they've half-assed everything else.  Won't cost them much.

It’s also just self-defeating. Why destroy the place where 12,000 people you desire to rule worked? (Great way to entrench an insurgency is to destroy jobs) Is it because you don’t want to rule them, you just want to murder them so you can take their land and they no longer compete with you in the international marketplace? Again illustrating that none of this is about liberation, it’s about a scorched earth policy of murdering a neighbor to enrich themselves because they think they can get away with it.

On the bright side, when this is over and back in Ukrainian hands in a few months, the Ukrainians will have access to tons of capital to rebuild a nice modern plant in its place with western technology, and erase all of the memories of the old Soviet times.

No doubt.  I actually like beets, and I absolutely love pumpernickel.  I was implying that eating only beets and pumpernickel will only get you so far.

Good point.  The upside is they will find some way to trip on their dick doing it like trying to drop a blast furnace and it lands on top of the whole deconstruction crew.  Can't wait for that video.

Company my son works for provides body armor, Counter IED gear, etc. Yes, streamlined procurement is alive and well. They have also taken orders from EU countries for delivery to the countries. Assumption is this is being sent forward as part of their aid packages.

Good interview with a Georgian fighter in Ukraine, (the”You missed me, dickhead!”guy from several weeks back). Worth the read.

“For Georgians, this is our chance to beat this evil empire here, where we have a chance to do so,” he says. “It’s that, or dying next in Georgia.”

Interesting if true. Maybe the Azov leadership decided to stay and go down with the ship or LOL if the Ukrainians got the leadership out the back door during the retreat.

thats actually not a good look at all.  you have roughly 1,300 defenders (incl the wounded exchanged earlier), surrender into what is most likely certain extreme torture at best or a gruesome death sentence at worst  and your leaders "get away"....

MacArthur took (rightfully) a shitload of grief over his and his families escape from Corregidor  (yes, I am aware Roosevelt "ordered' it). but he failed miserably in the leadership of the entire defense from Dec 41 until he abandoned 78,000 soldiers (US & Filipino)  of his command behind, of whom roughly 23,000 were Americans, of which only 15,000 returned to the US after the war

LT Gen Wainwright barely survived the captivity himself, when he was repatriated his uniform literally hung on his body

MacArthur should have fucking ignored the order, allowed his family to escape, and been captured.  it would have been a huge coup for Japan, but a commander doesnt leave his men behind to escape capture.
