Why in the name of vodka-soaked tardation would the Russians assume that Sevastopol is still out of Ukrainian HIMARS range? Because we said we didn't give the Ukrainians the 300km missiles? Isn't that the exact sort of thing we would lie about?

So a German, Italian, and Hungarian are flying a patrol over the Baltics.

They spot an incoming fleet of Russian bombers. The German asks for permission to engage, is told by his commander that the proper forms have not been filled out. The Hungarian waves at the Russians and joins them. The Italian beats his chest bravely, swears to fight and die, and puts a missile in the German.

Your best lines ever Sir. Well done.

It also explains why we aren’t just giving the Ukrainians NATO stuff and saying grip it and rip it.  Out tech has a steep learning curve to be effective.

They sure picked up Himars in a relative hurry though. Maybe F-16s are next.

WTF. Dumbasses.

Never mind the continuing use of Soviet imagery. Nothing says “insecurity of my failed state” like harkening back to its glory days as another predecessor failed state.

We need to calendar August 2 this year, and check in on the celebrations.   I’m thinking it will be veeeeery ugly.

Aaaaand….almost 8/2.   Gonna be hard to find enough paratroopers to put on the usual “celebration”.

I wonder if they cancel it - or just pretend that most paratroopers aren’t dead, but are serving in Ukraine.

As fun as that sounds, I’m thinking not given Ukraine is not yet a NATO member and we have a looooot of F-16s to give them.

Any guesses on how the Ukraine boosts its Navy when all this is said and done? Seems like they’re going to want to take that to the next level. When the Black Sea is so clearly their economic life line, I feel like they’re going to want to rethink their previous lack of emphasis on this front.

If they can retake Crimea, the Ukes are in a great position to bottle up a large part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

They will use the former GFs or was it daughters? I can never keep my Russian lies straight.

I am no expert but I am not sure the budget is best spent on a fleet. The Russian fleet is largely out of the fight (minus being used as cruise missile platforms but those strikes could be done by other platforms) due to a handful of neptunes and harpoons. Russia would still be able to enforce a blockade via submarines, air launched anti-ship missiles, mines, etc.

The Black Sea seems like a difficult place to operate any type of surface fleet. Maybe a couple of diesel electric guided missile subs could be a stronger deterrent in the future?

Agreed. I was mainly thinking of merchant fleet escort/ASW platforms to make sure their grain gets to market. Maybe some lower price point P-8s are the answer. Or ASW kitted Bayraktars or the likes. I don’t know, just musing.

I’m sure there are some sea salt cured surly denizens to set me straight on here.

Interesting idea with ASW drones. There have been some trials for an ASW MQ-9.

Damn these people are Caucus aggy.

I presume that the restaurant choices in the suburbs of Moscow are something like the inferior Russian version of Applebee’s. Subjecting diplomats to that would surely be a crime against humanity.

Instability brings more instability and chaos follows.

Would love to see that. Would be as entertaining as the current situation of fafo.

@blacklab was on subs but not sure if it was boomers or attack.  He might have opinions on operations in such areas.
