The French have a seaborne deterrent, and their Rafale fighters can operate from U.S. carriers.  And the French captain’s letter probably isn’t nice like the Brits where the commander can choose to place the boat under U.S command. It’s just “incinerate all the Russians you can while any pilots that lived ask if they can use an American ship to send a few more.”

Looks like Ukrainians will get trained on Patriots in Oklahoma. I love the look, we will never be the preferred destination just due to distance but this tells Allies “we’re doing it to” and crosses another little line to allow training on other top-tier systems we may give.

One of my old stomping grounds, wondered if they would train them there.

Lol, this is wild. Russian propaganda wants American men to escape The Trans and other diverse women by coming to Russia. I guess to replace all the blowed up mobiks?

Any American men stupid enough to buy into that, should go. We should buy them plane tickets.

And when they get mobilized, we should not return their phone calls.

Haven't these poor Ukrainians suffered enough? Now you're going to send them to fucking Oklahoma?

Better Fort Sill in the winter/spring than in the summer.

FT article that provides more context for the UK and Polish decision to send tanks. Seems like Germany is moving in the right direction.

UK and Poland confirm plans to send modern heavy tanks to Ukraine Decisions put pressure on Germany and other western nations to follow suit

Britain and Poland have confirmed they are planning to send modern heavy tanks to Ukraine, heaping pressure on Germany and other governments to follow suit. UK prime minister Rishi Sunak has asked defence secretary Ben Wallace to “work with partners” in the coming weeks to go “further and faster with our support for Ukraine including the provision of tanks”, Downing Street said. Polish president Andrzej Duda said his government would send a company of German-built Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine’s army “as part of the building of an international coalition”. A company implies around 14 tanks. The moves by London and Warsaw will ramp up pressure on Berlin to provide tanks of its own to Kyiv and to give the required approval to other governments to re-export German-built vehicles. Ukraine says it needs 300 western tanks to be able to liberate its territory from Russian occupation. It has its own fleet of Soviet-designed tanks, including hundreds captured from Russian forces and donated T-72 models from Poland and the Czech Republic. But spare parts and ammunition for them are limited. Western battle tanks, with their superior armour and firepower, would give Kyiv new offensive capabilities. “We are accelerating our support to Ukraine with the kind of next-generation military technology that will help to win this war,” the UK government official said. “It is clear that battle tanks could provide a game-changing capability to the Ukrainians.” “The war is not ending,” Duda said. “Everything indicates that Russia will continue to wage a war of attrition against Ukraine.” Britain is preparing to send its Challenger 2, a highly capable main battle tank. It would be the first modern western tank to be sent to Ukraine, but most experts say Ukraine would be better served by the Leopard 2. Thirteen European governments operate some 2,000 Leopards, providing a much larger pool for Kyiv to draw on. Germany and the US last week agreed to send infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine, which some analysts already regard as a Rubicon crossed in terms of offensive weaponry. France said it would be sending an unspecified number of AMX-10 armoured “tank killer” vehicles. Officials in Paris and some experts categorise the AMX-10 as a “light tank”. So far, however, German chancellor Olaf Scholz has refused to send heavy tanks, fearing it would be seen as a major escalation by Moscow and potentially drag Nato into the conflict. Scholz has said Berlin will not act alone, so its allies are trying to assemble a coalition of countries willing to send battle tanks to Ukraine. France is considering taking part, an official in Paris said. Scholz’s government coalition partners also favour sending Leopards. Robert Habeck, the deputy chancellor from the Green party, said he would not exclude such a move.

Ukrainian soldier in eastern town of Soledar tells CNN: "We're hanging in there" (but they cannot communicate with others around them).

Ukrainian soldier in eastern town of Soledar tells CNN: "We're hanging in there"

From CNN's Yulia Kesaieva

A Ukrainian soldier in the contested eastern town of Soledar told CNN Wednesday evening that he and his comrades remained in the settlement, but that the situation was “very difficult” and that the next 24 hours or so would be critical.

“It is tough here, but we are more alive than anyone else,” the soldier, whom CNN is not identifying for security reasons, said via text message.

The head of Wagner, the Russian private military company, claimed Tuesday that his forces had taken control of the “entire territory of Soledar.” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov tempered that sentiment on Wednesday, saying only that there was a “positive trend.” The Russian Defense Ministry said Wednesday that its forces had “blocked Soledar from the northern and southern parts” of the settlement.

“Don't believe what they say,” the Ukrainian soldier told CNN. “We're hanging in there. Though practically on our own. Without commanders.”

He said that the next 24 hours would be “very difficult.”

“During these days everything will be determined for the city. Because we are being trapped, they want to encircle us," he said.

The soldier said that if the nearby Ukrainian units held their ground, his unit would be able to safely retreat. He said that the Russians were jamming Ukrainian communications, making coordination extremely difficult.

“It is not clear who our neighbors are, but someone is there and fighting. We have no connection with them," the solider said.

That doesn't read like they're sending Leopard tanks to Ukraine. That reads like they're committed to sending Leopard tanks to Ukraine but they still don't have Germany's permission, yet. Still good to see, in that its a public affirmation of what we've been told about Poland's willingness to send them in any case, but I don't know that's it's a massive move of the needle.

Having said that, I do think it feels inevitable that Germany is going to relent.

It feels a little odd that the US equivalent is such a complicated piece of machinery, with such a complex supply line needed to operate and maintain them, that it's not realistic to export them to Ukraine, so we have to depend on Germany with their diesel tank engine Leopard, to supply Ukraine with what they need in this case. The Challenger 2 tank is in the same boat to an extent. UK doesn't have many of them, so the production and spare part facilities aren't going to be exactly robust, and from what I've read they have a proprietary ammunition for their main gun:

"Uniquely among NATO main battle tank guns, the L30A1 is rifled, because the British Army continues to place a premium on the use of high-explosive squash head (HESH) rounds in addition to armour-piercing fin-stabilised discarding-sabot rounds. The Challenger 2 is also armed with a L94A1 EX-34 7.62 mm chain gun and a 7.62 mm L37A2 (GPMG) machine gun. Fifty main armament rounds[11] and 4,200 rounds of 7.62 mm ammunition are carried."

But here we are.

It almost sounds like a "dry lease"--those tanks are going to be loaned or leased to the Ukrainians and operated by Ukrainian crews, but remain in the Polish army.  And I have to tell you--I'm not in love with that arrangement.

Anyway--I'd love to hear @Shady Ray's assessment.  We haven't heard from that cat in a while.
