Wow, that's huge. Scary but huge.

I thought that the treaty that prevents us from operating in the area is limited to the Sea of Azov, not the Black Sea.  I realize Turkey acts as the gatekeeper on the Black Sea, but the actual treaty is for the Sea of Azov.  Do I have that wrong?

In so far as submarines, I'd be shocked if we didn't already have them in the Black Sea.

Most likely just recovery vessels to look for and recover the drone pieces.  Maybe a couple of small escorts, too.  They'll need divers.  Aren't SEALs divers?

I played a lot of 2 man vball with Navy divers in San Diego. Super cool group. Extremely well trained minus the SEAL ultra-violence

was pretty jealous of their job really

I met a non-SEAL diver once, and he seemed to be the most competent, organized, and focused individual I ever met.  The kind of man you want with you if anything anywhere gets sideways.

I tried to convince my godson to go EOD. He was a high level freestyle competitor in high school and AAU and a black belt in jujitsu. His Mom basically bribed him with a new car and a big monthly stipend not to do it. Scared her baby was going to die in war. Which, fair point. Although an EOD rating wasn't going to be in the same kind of path of danger as other military occupations over the last 10 years. At the time I had an in with a Navy recruiter.

The big problem with SEALs is that they use it in part to get a ton of guys in knowing the numbers say they won't make it through training, then they can fill Navy needs with them in just about any way they want to. While EXTREMELY rigorous, EOD training simply doesn't have the significant dropout rate of BUDS, so you're a lot less likely to end up as a striker. It's highly prestigious, and a great community.

SEAL BUDS and Navy diver phase 1 (whatever that’s called) trained in the same area south of Coronado. Visiting diver pals I’d see the SEAL training up close. They were clearly having the worst day of their lives both physically and mentally. (Worst day so far . Jpg )

What's the penalty for skirting sanctions?

Pretty fucking significant.

Many moons ago, knew of an outfit that entirely inadvertently ended up supplying (through some shifty shell corp buyers) sensitive gear to a sanctioned country.  As soon as they realized what had happened, they had to spend a lot of time with US Customs with their hat in hand, explaining exactly how they screwed up and exactly how they weren't going to let it happen again.  And that was a pretty minor, low-volume situation.

Poor export controls alone can get you popped.  Actively and purposefully evading sanctions restrictions?  That's some next-level bad juju.

In that same meeting he said that over 150 Leopard 2 tanks have been pledged. I'm sure most of them are 2A4s, but those are still formidable tanks. The Swedes do a number of custom alterations to their Leopard 2s which should be useful in Ukraine.

Also, the German defense minister announced over 100 Leopard 1 tanks have been promised as well. That's not including the metric shit ton of Tawdry's the Poles have sent to the UAF. And don't forget, the British upped their ante from 14 Challenger tanks to 28.

Then sometime in 2029 those 31 Abrams will get there.

From what I can find, the penalties appear to be limited to financial. I'm NOT an expert, and really know nothing about the sector. But some quick google searching shows the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) is the key investigative/enforcement arm.

I did find that ZTE was fined $430.4 million for violating sanctions back in 2017.

Haas Automation is a big company with revenue over $1 billion, but they're not as big as ZTE.

Bittrex was fined $24 million not too long ago for not preventing access to sanctioned areas to their products, which isn't nearly as flagrant or deliberate as what Haas is being accused of.

Suffice to say the financial penalty will be significant. Not sure what will happen beyond that. Maybe someone else can add something that actually knows what they're talking about?

Yeah, I don’t know your full story, but I do know no one talks to sailors about the consequences of not making it through the training cycle of the rating you pick at MEPS. Doesn’t matter if it’s BUDS, EOD, Nuke, crypto, what have you. Once you’re out of that track, there’s no telling where you’re going to go. Doesn’t mean you end up a boatswain mate swabbing decks - but it doesn’t mean you won’t, either. Of course, a lot of what I know is outdated, but the military is still the military. Those billets aren’t going to fill themselves.

I hear you.  I was top of class brainwise. Choose your orders top of class. Got good orders even with a bad arm. Stayed in SD with a cool rate and nick name Lefty.

My schtick in stress situations was to approach cops calmly and try to Jedi mind trick them.

Such as asking for directions when spotted driving the wrong way up a one-way street.

Works all the time 60% of the time.

While the Navy diving qualifications, etc. are great for civilian world when you get out, my son loves to swim and I told him if that's what he wants to do, he needs to try to become a rescue swimmer in the Coast Guard.  We have a friend whose son did that, and holy shit are they competitive with plenty of top-tier swimmers.

And you better love swimming because when you aren't out on a helicopter or boat or whatever,  you're putting in laps.

There was a joint on revolution Blvd that had a sand volley court on the roof of their bar. Played late into the night every weekend. Left the building one night right into the middle of a street fight. No Jedi opportunity yo. People getting clubbed left and right. Old west running retreat back to the boarder. Lol. I sobered up at a Denny’s on roscranans before heading to balboa hospital. Got a pain pill after arm was reset. Solid 48 hours ouch.

So new to me, but perhaps I just hadn't noticed, the deep state map now has a feature that adds a layer of Russian troop concentration.  Certainly this isn't completely up to the minute, nor is it verifiable, but it is info I had seen before, fyi (if you click the footsteps it shows this):

https://deepstatemap.live/en#6/49.438/32.053

If the reports are true and the Ukrainians are poking around Polohy, it makes a lot of sense when you look at troop concentration combined with rail lines (you have to turn off the Nato feature to reveal the rail lines).   Polohy appears to be about 30 miles northeast of Tokmak and about 15 miles due north of Chernihivka.  I still think the opportunity to cut the rails and hold the area at Chernihivka makes the most sense, as it would cut supply to virtually 1/3 of Russian forces in country all along the south western fronts.  This would limit supplies to only what could cross at the Kerch bridge.  Chernihivka and anything to the west on it appears to have to come thru this bottle neck, which sure makes for a nice target.

Anyway, the new map features are pretty cool.

The Montreaux Convention governs the passage of warships through the Bosporous and Dardanelles.

The relevant stuff here is first that non-Black Sea states are limited in the amount of overall tonnage they can have in the Black Sea at any time. Non-Black Sea states cannot send capital ships through the straits, or submarines and even the Black Sea states have restrictions. Submarines have to pass surfaced.

The Bosporus and Dardanelles are narrow with heavy traffic and easily monitored by the Turks. There is really a crazy low likelihood we could slip a submarine through. The Turks would have to let us and for political reasons they wouldn’t.

OFAC is the office in Treasury that runs the sanctions program. Fines are super heavy and if the violation is wilful, individuals can face prison time of decades although usually under 10 years. OFAC will hook you up and it’s far better to self-report than let them catch you.

Reminder that Gene Haas’ F1 team signed a sponsorship deal with Uralkali, a fertilizer giant in Russia,  and gave the CEO’s son a seat in the car in 2021. They unwound the deal in 2022 and have been embroiled in a dispute with them as sponsor about a refund. The ties with Russia are extensive.

If Haas willfully supplied machine tools, I won’t be surprised to see the feds seek jail time.

The Navy has rescue swimmers, too. Has a buddy who did that straight out of high school, we were on the same swim team. He was a super strong swimmer but just not quite scholarship level and because his family had modest means he just joined the Navy. Swam for a few years, the fleet realized what they had and he converted from enlisted to officer where he flew and then supervised catapult operations.

Especially since Gene has already done Federal time for prior tax crimes.
