Russia is capable of coping with the situation in Ukraine on its own and does not need China's military support, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Hua Chunying announced on Thursday.

"Russia is a great power with might. It does not need the support of China or other countries," she said at a briefing, answering a corresponding question from a Western journalist.

The Chinese diplomat noted that Beijing’s position on this issue differs from the views of the American leadership. "We will not act as the United States acts, which supplies Ukraine with a large number of weapons," she stated.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said in a televised address on Thursday morning that in response to a request by the heads of the Donbass republics he had made a decision to carry out a special military operation in order to protect people "who have been suffering from abuse and genocide by the Kiev regime for eight years." The Russian leader stressed that Moscow had no plans of occupying Ukrainian territories.

When clarifying the developments unfolding, the Russian Defense Ministry reassured that Russian troops are not targeting Ukrainian cities, but are limited to surgically striking and incapacitating Ukrainian military infrastructure. There are no threats whatsoever to the civilian population.

So not a single cent of US/NATO humanitarian aid to any of those countries represented in that photo, amirite?

it would seem poor politics to further drive them to Putin side.  Small impoverished countries have played both sides to further their interests since the start of the Cold War.

CR stuff really.

Washington Post is pretty apocalyptic about Xi's visit.  Several articles the last few days talking about the two countries trying to forge a West-free path forward.

We’re not allowed to talk about China’s involvement in this war.

Take it to the China thread where we’re talking about balloons, please.

So Russia is basically North Korea now?

Just a reminder that Medvedev once came to Washington and got Ray’s Hell Burger with Obama.  Now he’s reduced to trolling the ICC and can’t leave Russia.

Truly an example of what Russia has done to itself, all by itself.

They are buying F-35s. I don't think we're backfilling them.

Poland also has F-16s that they already fly. But yeah, their most recent purchases are both F-35s and Korean T-50 light fighters. Not backfill, the replacements were already ordered. With sanctions in place, I’m not even sure Poland was still flying the MiGs, I know Slovakia had grounded their fleet.

These seem like parts planes.  Further, this is not a manned air war, which makes all this talk about MiG-29s and F-16s seem like a second tier concern.

Two of the Slovak airframes don’t have engines. The others had been grounded because up until the war broke out, they had been maintained by factory techs from Russia who had to go home.

I know that Bulgaria has some indigenous capability to do engine maintenance for the MiG-29. And before the war, Ukraine did as well— which they clearly still have, since they are keeping their own aircraft flying.

Some of these planes will fly and others may indeed be important to keep the others going. They are important, will likely see a lot of duty away from the front lines hunting cruise missiles.

The big benefit to getting them on the F-16 is the amount of additional support that would be unlocked and not as much the capability of the aircraft itself. These NATO-compatible MiGs got delivered in 1992– about the same vintage of the types of F-16s they’d get. They are capable planes.

The big win would be the numbers we have and the eliminated need to shade tree mechanic engineer western weapons to launch from a MiG.

The new Block 70 is different, it’s basically a 5th gen radar in a 4th gen fighter. But those are just coming off the line for Slovakia and Bahrain.
