The daughters of Russian President Vladimir Putin rarely make public appearances, but this week they took part in panels at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Maria Vorontsova and Katerina Tikhonova, believed to be in their mid to late 30s, are Putin’s daughters from his marriage to former wife Lyudmila, whom he divorced in 2013 after nearly 30 years of marriage. Putin has said his daughters work in science and education and that he has grandchildren, but he has never confirmed their names.

Quote

Both of them have attended the annual St. Petersburg forum in the past, but only the younger daughter, Tikhonova, has been a speaker, according to the Russian independent outlet Novaya Gazeta Europe.

Tikhonova, who is a tech executive, made a video appearance on Thursday at a forum about ensuring the “technological sovereignty” of the military-industrial complex. She was listed in the forum’s list of speakers as the general director of the National Intellectual Development Foundation (NIDF). The panel was moderated by television host and prominent Putin propagandist Vladimir Soloviev.

Quote

Tikhonova was sanctioned by the US and UK in April 2022, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, for her work supporting the Russian defense ministry. In her remarks at the forum, she talked about innovation and eliminating the import of technologies related to the civil and military spheres.

The older daughter, Maria Vorontsova, who was also sanctioned, spoke in person at a panel on Friday about innovations in biotechnology and bioproduction. Vorontsova, an endocrinologist, was listed as a member of the Russian Association for the Promotion of Science.

Quote

Analysts believe some of Putin’s wealth may be hidden in the bank accounts of family members.

And those family members are dead when Putin is dead.

Quote

The Russian president has previously said that his daughters are not involved in politics and live ordinary lives. Tikhonova reportedly once tried to pursue a career in acrobatic rock and roll.

Vorontsova reportedly married a Dutch businessman and the couple is said to have lived in a $3.3 million apartment in the Netherlands. A multimillion-dollar, eight-bedroom villa in Biarritz, France has been linked to Tikhonova. It was bought by her former husband, Kirill Shamalov.

The Kremlin has always denied rumours that Putin has more children outside of his former marriage who all appear to have lived in Western countries.

I imagine she looks like that all the time.  Like I said, unless she flees to the West, she’s dead when Putin is dead.

Pos rep.  the hair similarity is uncanny.  Though something tells me Miss Putin is not quite as funny as Amy Sedaris.

Though there is a tv show idea in here, "Russians with Candy."

The season finale is Vlad dies, a Russian general offers her some candy.

Vorontsova, "Hey, this chocolate tasted kinda weird."

General, "I don't know anything about that."

and she dies from poison, and we are laughing...

Russia has made some gains in the Chasiv Yar direction. They're using the same Avdiivka tactics. It's my understanding that taking Chasiv Yar would be much more of a strategic advantage than Bakhmut or Avdiivka

France transfers new weapons and armored vehicles to Ukraine
France transferred new batches of weapons, ammunition, VAB armored personnel carriers, vehicles, and boats to Ukraine.

The French Ministry of Armed Forces has updated the list of defense assistance provided to Ukraine.

On March 4 this year, France published for the first time a quantitative list of military equipment supplied to Ukraine. This list has now been updated to May 1, 2024.

France has delivered defense aid to Ukraine worth a total of €3.035 billion, and €2.1 billion was transferred to the European Peace Fund, making military assistance over €5.135 billion.

The updated list includes 34 VAB armored personnel carriers (284 units in total).

The French VAB wheeled armored personnel carrier was developed by Renault and Saviem. The APC has been in service with Ukraine since 2022.

The number of delivered Zodiacs FUTURA boats increased by 19 (49 boats in total).

For the first time, France has handed over 5 Camions TRM 10000 trucks designed to transport military cargo.

The list also includes 63 Mk81 bombs and a classified number of the latest French AASM bomb kits.

The Ukrainian Air Force equips MiG-29 fighter jets with these bombs, which have been adapted for French weapons.

The AASM is a modernization kit for existing free-fall unguided bombs like the US JDAM, which Ukrainian tactical aviation already uses.

The list also includes new batches of various anti-tank weapons and ammunition.

BREAKING 🚨 Ukrainian naval drone may have sunk a large landing ship in Yeysk last night - Crimean Wind channel reports

At night, around midnight , a Ukrainian UAV attacked a Russian ship near the port of Yeisk (point two) and the ship, preliminary, went to accompany the cruiser "Moscow" .

In the morning, all information about the attack was deleted from all public pages."

This was posted in one of the Reddit communities devoted to tracking the war.

Some of the commenters are saying this would be a big deal a) because it may have been full of troops, b) Russia has been using these to ferry troops across the sea to avoid having to use the Kerch bridge, and c) Russian doesn't have too many left.

@Schulz2.0 Not mentioned in your Bloomberg article are Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger—all three countries where Wagner has been active and where successful coups have recently taken place. They all happen to also be former French colonies where their former governments had previously invited the French and US (both now kicked out, I believe) to help them fight Islamic extremists. If Russia is recruiting in neighboring Côte d'Ivoire, as your article mentions, I'm sure they're doing so in the three listed above. This might be one reason why France has begun to really step up its game in assisting Ukraine, but I'm just speculating on that point.

This seems significant. A Ukrainian warplane has for the first time hit a target inside Russia.

Every anti-air unit that Ukraine takes out pushes Russian air defenses a little farther back, as well as spreads them out.  It’s only a matter of time before some large gaps open up.

Wagner wants resources and bodies. That is it. Did not see the article, but hope it mentioned Sudan.

And yes, they are recruiting. And also doing so in lots of places that do not hit the headlines. South Africa is another. $ talks to the poor with only 1 skill.

This is the article Schultz posted above: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-06-09/russia-ukraine-war-africans-forced-to-fight-and-die-for-the-kremlin

Sudan and ZA aren't specifically listed from what I read, but none of them would surprise me.

this could be a serious issue shortly. Ukraine is going to most likely lose French support.

Macron's party got trounced in a prelim election today, forcing him to dissolve parliment and set a snap vote in 3 weeks to refill everything.

it looks like he and his party will be landslide outvotted in 3 weeks. with the far right candidate being the new leader of France

Dismal news for sure, but it won't change the presidency in France like it would in the UK. The office of the president in France has a fixed five-year term.

The head of the National Assembly (prime minister in France is kinda/sorta like a really beefed up House Speaker role that mostly manages domestic policy) would be from the National Rally (fka National Front, a party with fascist roots) if they manage to build a majority coalition with other parties after the snap elections.

Macron will remain president regardless for the duration of his term. Still...fuck.

The EU-wide election results aren't positive news for future Ukraine funding from Europe.

It's kinda weird how they're setup. Essentially if the president's party is the majority, the President has a lot of authority and practically runs things. If it doesn't then the Prime Minister has all the authority, and the President is a figurehead.

Another reason why the slow trickle of aid and fear of "red lines" was dumb. They needed to give Ukraine the means to whip Russia's ass.

Not quite.

  • President (Head of State): oversees all the shit, runs foreign policy, is the commander in chief, appoints ministers (cabinet) to run executive branch offices
  • Prime Minister (Head of Government): in charge of domestic policy

If the National Rally gets the largest share in next month's National Assembly elections (right now, running at 32-ish percent in the EU parliamentary elections), they'll likely have to form a coalition with other parties to get a majority, and then they get to have their Prime Minister.

For consideration:

  • Turn-out is typically lower in EU elections because the EU parliament is relatively weak in its overall governance, so only the most motivated vote.
  • In past presidential elections (almost always goes to a second round), all the other parties typically rally against the National Rally.
  • In the coming National Assembly election, they might not do as well (hopefully, today's outcome will motivate folks to the polls) and will have difficulty building a majority coalition (There's one other smaller, even more extreme party that just got 5 percent in the EU elections and another standard-issue traditional conservative one that got 7 percent). So, they've got at least a couple of potential coalition partners.
  • Combined, that's hypothetically still less than a needed majority at 44%, but even that's too fucking close.

My understanding, without talking to French friends, is a lot of these EU elections reflect anti-immigrant sentiment and climate change policies, so I don't really know fully how this will affect support for Ukraine. The EU collectively, I think, recently began to coordinate immigration policies more than in the past.

Here are the exit polls:

image.png.021b6232528f8fdc1f4339ddaca0365c.png

  • Far far right: Reconquête (Reconquest in English) anti-Ukraine/anti-NATO/anti-EU.
  • Far right: Rassemblement national (National Rally) anti-Ukraine/anti-NATO/Euroskeptic to anti-EU.
  • Right: Républicains. Not entirely sure their stance on Ukraine, but I suspect pro. Traditionally squishy on NATO but they swung more friendly 10-15 years ago. pro-EU.
  • Centrist to center right: Renaissance (Macron's party). Pro-Ukraine/pro-NATO/pro-EU.
  • Centrist to center left: Parti socialiste-Place publique. Pro-Ukraine/squishy to pro-NATO/pro-EU.
  • Left to far-left: La France soumise (Insubordinate France). Not sure on Ukraine/squishy to anti-NATO/squishy sometimes on EU.
  • Greens: Les EcologistesPro-Ukraine/pro-NATO/pro-EU.

Of course, France is just one out of 27 countries that voted in the EU elections. We'll see how this pans out across the continent.

So from all the donors how many kickass American F16’s are they gonna get?  Seems like a hodgepodge where a buncha countries each gave a few.

Good question. I just came across this Wiki page where someone(s) is/are keeping track of all military aid, and it looks like (direct copy/pastes):

  • Belgium: 30 F-16s pledged by 2028.
  • Denmark: 9 F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets pledged 20 August 2023.
  • Netherlands: 42 F-16 Fighting Falcon fighter jets pledged 20 August 2023 [To be delivered from 2024 onwards] (Some held back in the Netherlands for the training of Ukrainian pilots).
  • Norway: F-16A/Bs [To be delivered].

I found another source that says a total of 85 will be delivered (so, 4 from Norway?).

The Wiki page looks up-to-date since it also mentions the Mirage jets France announced a few days ago.
