Western democracies better figure out a way to combat Russian right-wing propaganda or we'll all become fascist states.

The main issue is immigration. Western leaders need to learn how to fix it or right-wingers will gain influence.

I can't remember if it's been posted here or not but Russia is increasingly recruiting local extremists and gangs to do what their own operatives used to do before they were expelled. Unfortunately, it gives Russia another level of deniability and provides the Western countries space to not have to retaliate against Russia.

More prep work with ATACMS

Russian channel ASTRA confirms the info reported by the Ukrainian General Staff.

--

During an overnight missile attack on Crimea on June 10, two S-300 complexes and four radars were damaged. The attack involved at least 10 ATACMS missiles, none of which were intercepted. The strikes targeted locations of the 31st Air Defense Division of the Russian Defense Ministry, resulting in one serviceman killed and six wounded. Specifically, four missiles hit the Dzankoyskiy rayon, damaging two radar stations and injuring one serviceman. Another four missiles struck the Sakskiy rayon, damaging military equipment and wounding another serviceman. Two additional missiles hit the Chornomorske district near Hromovka, damaging two radars and two S-300 complexes, killing one serviceman, and wounding four others. The AFU General Staff reported successful strikes on an S-400 anti-aircraft missile division near Dzhankoy, and two S-300 divisions near Chernomorskoye and Yevpatoria.

I would think with the sanctions in place it would be near to impossible for Russia to quickly pump out replacement air defense systems.   And if the choice is protecting important elites in Moscow and St. Petersburg - or protecting contract soldiers in Ukraine - the latter are SOL.   And the ones that protect energy and oil refinery and production won’t be removed either.

My assumptions are based on, absolutely nothing, so do any of the more knowledgeable people here have any idea how easy or hard it is for Russia to build replacement missile defense radar systems - or know how many they have in warehouses?

Within 3 days of each other we're going to have votes in the UK and in France. Will be very interesting. The short timeline (snap election) in France and their unique election rules makes things more difficult for the more fringe parties. It will be an interesting month.

Italy's PM Meloni comes out on top in EU vote, strengthening her hand

image.png.f200cdf6f46d5222251f6813d4ab2150.png

ROME, June 10 (Reuters) - Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's arch-conservative Brothers of Italy group won the most votes in the European parliamentary election over the weekend, boosting her standing both at home and abroad.

"I am proud that Italy will present itself to the G7, to Europe with the strongest government of all. This is something that has not happened in the past but is happening today, it is a satisfaction and also a great responsibility," Meloni said early on Monday from the party's headquarters.

The EU ballot indicated that Meloni's ruling coalition, made up of parties that stretch from the centre-right to the far right of the political spectrum, saw its support climb to more than 47% from just under 43% in 2022.

"It's a spur for (the government) to move forward. Italians are giving us a loud and clear message to go ahead with our work ... and if possible with greater determination."

Meloni's party traces its roots back to a neo-fascist group, and her 2022 victory set the tone for far-right gains across Europe, including in the latest EU ballot, which has seen the continent swing right.

However, Meloni has moderated her image on the international stage, dropping her previous anti-EU rhetoric and presenting herself as a bridge between the mainstream centre-right and her own national conservative camp, which was previously shunned.

Her strong showing on Sunday came in stark contrast to setbacks suffered by French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, whose parties were routed.

Speaking on radio, Meloni said, however, it was still too early to say whether she would back a second term for centre-right European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.  Her group of lawmakers might prove decisive should Meloni decide to back von der Leyen, potentially giving Rome leverage over the new EU executive.

I won't pretend to understand the inner workings of the EU, but Meloni's strength is good for Ukraine, I think. She won in 2022 as a far-right candidate, and quickly pivoted as one of Ukraine's strongest supporters. She is a powerful, passionate speaker who put right and wrong principles over the party politics that got her elected. I don't understand Italian, but I would support her for the simple reason I wouldn't want to be against her.

Whether or not Italy's military and economic posture match her rhetoric I don't know, but she does not appear to be a sit on the fence and let's see what happens kind of gal.

Transformers are to power generation/supply as process towers are to oil refining. These typically have the longest lead times to purchase/replace equipment.

I hope the war evolves to where Ukraine is comfortable chasing Russian shitbox MIG’s back into Russian airspace and dogfighting with those fuckers.  Would rock.  The kickass American F16 was born to kill Russians.

The loss of the two A-50s plus the continued dwindling of the air defenses will make the arrival of the F-16's real interesting later this summer. There is a major chance that we end up with a "split" in how the war is going where Ukraine is dominating the air in Crimea and using that to support a leapfrog advance in Crimea while seeing in effect a "wall" of air defense N/E of Melitopol.  At the same time you could see a concerted Russian push towards Slovainsk and continued pressure toward Kharkiv.  How both sides react to this will be very telling. The real thing people need to understand is that if the arrivals of the F-16s doesn't radically change the goings on in the overall theater, I am not sure we will see any form of resolution to this in the foreseeable future.

What’s interesting to me is that the F-16s may come into the theater only having to worry about MANPADS, if most of the larger AD systems are pushed back into Russia to protect infrastructure. The F-16s can easily handle that threat with a lot of their munitions allowing them to stay out of range. They could also be supported by low-flying drones looking for MANPAD operators.

Exactly. So now you have in essence a textbook situation for how US ground war doctrine should be implemented. Control the air, use the air to punish any large groups or well dug in positions and use speed to leapfrog and overrun the area. Now combine this with drone swarms and the occasional ATCAMS for positions that would be too hot for the F16s and you could see the Ukraine army advance into Crimea and get to the point that they need to change their thinking from destroying the Kerch bridge to taking it and forcing Russia to either blow it up or potentially having to redeploy their forces into a new bottleneck.

It’s funny - we are spending money on developing expensive autonomous drones to accompany F-22s and F-35s both in defensive and offensive roles (the drones that is) and Ukraine will be doing virtually the same thing with 45 year-old F-16s and $500 drones flown by 20-somethings.  And Ukraine’s way of doing things will work, given the degraded AD systems. When the US goes in, we try to take out AD in one fell swoop with shock-and-awe to pave the way for everything else, but while Ukraine is doing it piecemeal, the result is the same - Russia can’t replace most of those systems.

It also won’t take many Russian MANPAD operators getting blown up by drones before they really start keeping their heads down.  Those MANSPADs leave a trail pointing right at the operators for Ukrainian drone pilots to take out

If they keep up what they are doing, Crimea is absolutely in play, and it’s telling that ATACMS seems to be getting through easily.

Putin is going to have to go really hard on interfering with elections both here in the US and Europe.  Ukraine is doing an excellent job of using Western weapons/tactics to make up the manpower imbalance with Russia.

Ward Carroll over on YouTube has a good interview up with a British writer about Russian logistical replacement of arty and AD.  There is the thought that if the Ukrainians can make it through the summer that Russia's ability to keep up with the damaged and/or tubes will start to show.

They also address the training in F-16s.  Russian/Soviet training and doctrine placed a lot of command and control in commanders on the ground and in command aircraft.  NATO methodology give the pilots much more autonomy.  They are having to break some bad habits by Ukrainian pilots.

A lot of Europe's illegal immigration has been driven by Russia (Syria, Africa).

Ukraine needs to add to their population, it seems there’s a grand compromise available here.

Amazing details about Wagner's Expendable Assault Force. https://kyivindependent.com/nearly-20-000-wagner-mercenaries-died-taking-bakhmut-media-investigation-confirms/

Quote

Prigozhin's Wagner began to bring tens of thousands of convicts from Russia's prisons into its ranks, including those convicted of rape and murder, during the group's main recruitment drive in late 2022.

Used in combination with the more professional and experienced Wagner units, the prisoners proved to be highly effective as an expendable assault force.

Their main success was the capture of Bakhmut, a city in Donetsk Oblast now razed to the ground, in May 2023 after a months-long battle.

The report also found 17,000 of those killed were former prisoners, pardoned by Russian President Vladimir Putin in exchange for heading to the front.

Nearly 20,000 Russian mercenaries died fighting for Wagner Group during the Battle of Bakhmut, an investigation by BBC Russia and Mediazona published on June 10 has found.

The outlets obtained documents shortly after the death of the group's founder, Yevgeny Prigozhin in August 2023, detailing the posthumous payments to relatives of those killed fighting in Ukraine between January 2022 and August 2023.

"This document contains more than 20,000 names of those killed," Mediazona writes, adding: "Most of the Wagnerites died in the 'Bakhmut meat grinder' –  more than 19,500 people."

The numbers roughly confirm the number claimed by Prigozhin himself in May 2023 when he said he had lost more than 20,000 men in the fight for the town.

Using the identification numbers of those killed, journalists were also able to determine that at least 48,000 prisoners fought for Wagner during this time.

Prigozhin later that year launched a short-lived insurrection against the Kremlin in late June 2023, capturing the city of Rostov and marching toward Moscow.

However, less than 24 hours after starting the rebellion, it was declared over and he announced that he was turning his forces around and returning to base.

Following an undisclosed deal allegedly brokered by Belarusian dictator Alexander Lukashenko, the warlord was allowed to walk free and then released a video claiming to be in Africa.

Two months later – on Aug. 23 – a private jet with Prigozhin onboard crashed not far from Moscow, killing him and everyone else onboard.

According to unnamed U.S. officials cited by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) on Aug. 24, the likely cause was a bomb onboard or "some other form of sabotage."

A later WSJ piece put the finger of blame on Nikolai Patrushev, Putin's "right-hand man."
