Also, I can't help picturing this every time a story about the Tuaregs pops up, and man, they aren't taking anybody out (except maybe to McDonald's or the kids' soccer game)

if someone hasnt invented a very, very small WW2 hedgehog-style ball-bearing-ringlet  to drop over a  rotor drone, they probably should have, yesterday in fact.

fly above it, release based on radar estimates of speed, etc, let loose a small ring salvo, and hope for a contact hit.

and as we know, those things are fragile,  damaging just a single blade is probably enough to unbalance the drone enough to make it either malfuntion and land, or centripital/centrifical force itself to pieces.

and using ball bearings instead of little bomblets means you dont have random small firecracker sized explosves all over the countryside waiting to blow someones hand off.

I've thought before that a squadron of P-51s or Corsairs would be right handy to intercept drones.  Better yet, a squadron of A-1 Skyraiders.  Those things had loiter times measured in days, not hours.  (Ok, slight exaggeration.  Still...)

The militarized version of the ubiquitous Air Tractor, the OA-1K Sky Warden, has a loiter time of about six hours. And that's with a full combat load, supposedly.

Looks like the byproduct of a Pilatus having sex with a Stuka.

Now that they have them, I don’t think they wanna lose them to Russian man-pad type weapons.   Preventing missile strikes on civilian centers - and perhaps more importantly, energy producing facilities as we lurch toward winter in four or five months - is perhaps more important than dropping bombs on Russian troops.

Only six Ukrainian pilots trained to fly new F-16 fighter jets

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/world-news/2024/07/28/only-six-ukrainian-pilots-trained-to-fly-new-f-16-jet/

Spoiler

Only six Ukrainian pilots have reportedly been trained by European Nato members to fly F-16 fighter jets due to be delivered to Kyiv next month.

Ukraine has been urging its allies for months to send them the jets, claiming they would help defend against long-range strikes and bring about a swift end to the war.

Citing Ukrainian and Western officials, the Washington Post reported that not only are there far too few trained pilots to give Ukraine an edge but the jets can not immediately be used on the front line due to improving Russian air defences.

Several European countries have been involved in the programme to train Ukrainian pilots on F-16s, which includes language training in Britain. But the project had limited spots and was marred by delays, the unnamed officials told the Post.

The officials said that Ukraine would only receive one squadron of F-16s this year, roughly 20 fighter jets, far fewer than it had been hoping for.

Russian military bloggers were quick to mock the situation, particularly for all the hype over F-16s and the hope they could change the course of the war.

Fighterbomber, a Telegram channel that specialises in aviation, said that six pilots meant Ukraine would only be able to deploy two fighter jets at the same time because “a pilot can’t work around the clock”.

“Two pilots are at most 10 combat sorties per day in total,” Fighterbomber said. “For the whole of Ukraine, 10 F-16 sorties is nothing.”

?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.telegraph.co.uk%2Fcontent%2Fdam%2Fworld-news%2F2024%2F07%2F28%2FTELEMMGLPICT000387276029_17221863128450_trans_NvBQzQNjv4BqpVlberWd9EgFPZtcLiMQf0Rf_Wk3V23H2268P_XkPxc.jpeg&fo=webp&w=640 Volodymyr Zelensky have complained that the weapon pledges have come a little too late - MADS CLAUS RASMUSSEN/AFP

For two years, Ukraine has been asking for F-16 fighter jets to counter Russia’s domination of the skies. In total, 80 F-16 fighter jets have been promised to Ukraine by Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway and Belgium.

But Volodymyr Zelensky and Ukrainian commanders have complained that like with other weapons pledges, it is too little, too late. The officials said that when the much-vaunted F-16s do finally arrive in Ukraine, they won’t be the game-changers as hoped.

One reason is that Ukrainian commanders have said they will be deployed in a defensive capacity because Russia still controls the skies and has set up air defence systems across the front line, making it too risky to send out F-16s.

“We will not use it too close to the Russians” due to the threat of air defences, a Ukrainian official told the Washington Post.

?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.telegraph.co.uk%2Fcontent%2Fdam%2Fworld-news%2F2024%2F07%2F28%2FTELEMMGLPICT000387274661_17221864555520_trans_NvBQzQNjv4BqRo0U4xU-30oDveS4pXV-Vv4Xpit_DMGvdp2n7FDd82k.jpeg&fo=webp&w=640 Mr Zelensky with Ludivine Dedonder (L), Belgium's defence minister, and Alexander De Croo (R), Belgium's prime minister at an inspection visit - SIMON WOHLFAHRT/AFP

Basing the F-16s in Ukraine has also become a problem. F-16s need a long, clean runway, free of stones or debris. Over the past few weeks, Russia has been bombing the only suitable bases.

Ukrainian frustrations over the limited impact of the F-16s come as relations between Kyiv and Washington fray. US media reported that earlier this month, the Kremlin phoned Washington to warn that Ukraine was planning a covert operation that would trigger a bigger war. Furious and alarmed, the US reportedly ordered Kyiv to call off the attack.

On the battlefield, the Russian Ministry of Defence said that it had captured another village in Donbas.

Its forces have been making slow but steady progress over the past nine months but Russian military bloggers said that Ukraine’s robust defences, aided by its superior drones, meant they were struggling to break through.

“The incomplete (to put it mildly) technical readiness of our troops to confront hundreds of enemy first-person view drones significantly slows the advance of the Russian Army,” said Two Majors, the Russian military blogging channel.

As mentioned, not enough pilots, plus just the threat of them in the theater are going to force Russian aircraft deeper into Russian territory - that alone buys Ukraine a lot more time when missiles are launched. Their air-to-air capabilities can be used to intercept larger missiles and drones/UAVs - the US used F/A-18s to take down a lot of drones/missiles headed for Israel a while back.

Now fast-forward a few months, and if there are more pilots, and if Ukraine has continued to devastate Russian air defenses, who knows.

Ball bearings might rely lucky contact too much. Something designed to linger more would likely be better, chaff, those little parachutes they use on firecrackers, might be a better option.

And that was always going to be a problem with F-16s and why people wanted F-18s or the Swedish aircraft, for the runways, but F-16s are plentiful and single engine = easier maintenance.

I still think we'll see them in air defense (and I do think they have some places in Western Ukraine figured out for them to base out of) for the time being.

But if they can clear anti-air in a path through Crimea, or control the sea enough, I wonder if we'd see them make a run at the bridge or any ships in harbor (even if it's using stand-off glide bombs or cruise missiles).

Maybe, I'm not holding my breath, though. We have been waiting a few years it seems to train 6 pilots.

I'm having a hard time believing that between us and the Europeans, we've only trained 6 pilots.  There's no way the USAF was doing a bunch of stuff at Luke AFB for 2-3 pilots, and the Europeans put together a group to train 2-3 pilots.

Here's hoping the Ukrainians have a full stack of sub drones at the ready.

Per the Ukrainian Navy spokesman: "Sometimes Russia's Black Sea Fleet is called a submarine fleet. Now it is true."

So they are now looking to use sub-based cruise missiles to attack Ukraine? This is a sign that they are pretty much scraping the bottom of the barrel regarding cruise missile production and instead are looking to use the much more expensive sub based systems... That is absolutely wild that they are insinuating that this is a good idea or a show of force. These are deterrent-based offensive weapons whose primary value is from surprise.  This is a sign of desperation and it they use them as just localized missile platforms, the Ukrainians will find a way to sink one of these. The Black Sea is tiny and I am fairly sure we know exactly where these subs are at all times...

Yeah, does not seem the best thing to do. Stand by for infrastructure hits in 1,2,3...

One thing this war has shown the world is all of Russia's equipment in actual combat and it is not that good. The navy was probably the last one to be tarnished.

We should loan Ukraine this dude.

Would have to ask @blacklab but it seems like those things are extremely slow to be reloaded versus their surface ships and/or are very vulnerable when being reloaded. Seems like a really shitty localized missile platform for an ongoing war.

If they fire their load pretty much every day, they also give the Ukrainians and NATO satellites a look at what routes they are traveling and where they are being reloaded, etc. and that doesn’t seem like it would be good for them.

Could also be a sign they are worried about F-16s sneaking in and hitting some bombers or the air defenses have been pushed back so far because of Ukrainian drones/UAVs that the missiles they have available are out of range over land. Black Sea gives them a chance to get closer if these are shorter range missiles.   We will have to see the range on what they fire.

Hopefully some of this is messaging to the West

image.thumb.png.ede5aaa84ad9d967807ff3cd5d63f048.png

this is the auto-translated version

Quote

Russia has practically completed preparations for a new massive strike. The enemy will likely focus on energy and transport infrastructure, in particular airfields, LB sources in the Defense Forces reported. It should be noted that the readiness for the task of strikes in the enemy is observed every week, and energy and transport infrastructure have long been its goals.

The previous week, the enemy carried out training departures of Tu-160 aircraft in a format close to the operation of strikes on Ukraine. This indicates the possible preparation of Russians to attract such aircraft for strikes.

At the previous level, there is a risk of damage to land facilities in Ukraine, in particular for Kyiv and regional centers of northern and western regions.

In general, the enemy is actively increasing the land potential of his army and transfers troops, weapons and equipment to the occupied territory. Conducts maneuvers between operating directions and increases defensive capabilities in the captured territory. Within a week, the enemy carried out an average of up to 90 combat missions of tactical/Army aviation and fired at up to 1,300 settlements (some repeatedly).

There is also evidence of changes in the enemy group. From the Dnieper direction, the enemy transferred 810 separate brigade of Marines to Donetsk region - it was included in the operational reserve of the Center group.

Also, 325 regiment of the Moscow Military District was transferred from the operational reserve to Kupyansky direction.

Given the changes in the ground grouping of the Russian armed forces, according to Ukraine, is up to 524,000. In addition, up to 35.8 thousand are the national enemy's army.

What’s visibility like in the Black Sea? Will the one way UUVs need sonar to find the subs or will cameras be sufficient? Does Ukraine have access to western sonar systems?

If they had 524,000 in Ukraine, it feels like we’d see a lot more action.  Of course, they could have a million and if all they have is golf carts and motorcycles to take them into battle, they are useless.

Between this and the boat video, this has got be creating a shitload of Russians who might get back to Mother Russia and then go bonkers when some kid plays with their little drone in the park.

Seems like a few dozen unarmed drones could stop a Russian offensive just by popping up and chasing the Russians in the front who can’t take a chance that they are unarmed.
