shit. load up 10 tanker trucks, 5 tanks and 10 bradleys and make a run for Moscow.... whats the worst that could happen?  its not like Russia had any fucking planning on the possibility of their former underlings saying fuck it and making a Wagner run ... which means they literally have zero defense against it. and no fucking fighter planes near enough to do anything because they are located in bases far from the front now.

Ritter appears to be in the area: On Tuesday, he posted a photograph of himself on X — the website formerly known as Twitter — alongside independent presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who has been in an Albany courtroom this week while lawyers argue over whether he should be allowed on the November ballot in New York.

“Burgers with Bobby!,” wrote Ritter, a repeat guest on Kennedy's podcast; the photo appeared to be taken at a restaurant across from Albany Medical Center Hospital.

Reporter: Mr. Kennedy, if you were elected President, would you reach out to Putin about Ukraine?

RFK Jr: It’s funny you ask that, I’ve talked with Vladimir Putin several times over the years.  The last time we spoke was around August or September of 2021, and I remember him asking me if I thought NATO would get involved if he made a move on taking all of Ukraine.  I told him that they wouldn’t lift a finger or supply Ukraine with a single bullet, and that the Ukrainians probably wouldn’t resist and would even welcome him with open arms.

The actual goals are still unclear. Ukraine might try to shift some of the Russian focus from other areas to Kursk. Ukraine may also seek better positions for future negotiations, if the purpose of the operation is to take over and hold land areas for a longer period of time. 3/

The Kursk operation may also have longer-lasting effects, as it likely forces Russia to commit even more troops to the border. Russia has most likely expected only limited-scale attacks on border villages, not a stronger and wider offensive by elements of multiple brigades. 4/

Besides the scale, it’s notable that the current Kursk offensive isn’t conducted by Russian volunteer units, like the previous ones. We actually have not yet seen proof of Russian Volunteer Corps or Freedom of Russia Legion participating in it. 5/

The goal should be to blitzkrieg with a pincer movement. Capture lots of forces and equipment and then get the hell out. So basically, Ukraine should try to severely weaken and degrade Russian forces which will take Russia a long time to recover from. Russia desperately needs this to be a war of attrition. Ukraine should change the dynamic with this attack.

This would make for a fun COD campaign chapter.

What if Russia has literally no substantive forces in the area?

Why would they?  They were invading Ukraine, not the other way around!  Until now...

Brilliant strategy for Ukraine!

Probably, but I expect a sternly worded message from the US. I'll have to see if the Telegraph publishes anything on it in the next few days.

This war reminds us that defense is a lot easier than offense.  So Ukraine takes as much Russian land as they can before Russia moves forces in, then grinds Russia down as they try to take their own land back?

Using their Migs for ground attack and F-16's for air control from within Ukraine territory.

US reaching out to Ukraine over reports of Kursk region incursion, White House says

by Kateryna Denisova August 7, 2024 8:35 PM 2 min read

U.S. officials are reaching out to their Ukrainian counterparts "to get a little better understanding" of the situation in Russia's Kursk region, where clashes between Russian and Ukrainian forces are currently taking place, U.S. National Security Council spokesperson John Kirby told reporters on Aug. 7.

Ukrainian forces crossed the border into the Kursk region on Aug. 6, resulting in clashes on Russian soil that have continued into the following day, Russian officials say.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described the incursion as a "large-scale provocation," while Russian Army Chief of Staff Valery Gerasimov claimed on Aug. 7 that Ukraine's "advance in the Kursk direction was halted." Kyiv has not commented on the fighting in the area.

At a press conference on Aug. 7, U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said it was "a bit rich for (Russia) to call it a provocation" in light of the more than 10 years that Russia has violated Ukraine's territorial sovereignty.

"I'll let the Ukrainians speak to their operations one way or the other.  That’s most appropriate," Kirby said.

Miller acknowledged that the U.S. did not know about the incursion before it happened but said "it's not unusual for the Ukrainians not to notify us of their exact tactics before they execute them, it's a war that they are conducting."

Washington hasn't changed its policy of allowing Ukraine to use American-supplied weapons "to target imminent threats just across the border," Kirby said. Separately, Miller said that the incursion had not violated U.S. policy.

When Russia launched its intensified offensive against Kharkiv Oblast in May, a number of countries said they had lifted restrictions on the use of Western-provided weapons against military targets inside Russia.

The U.S. granted Kyiv limited permission to use certain American weapons to strike Russian targets near the region's border.

The Kursk region lies on the border with Ukraine's Sumy Oblast, which has been experiencing daily attacks since Russian troops were pushed out of the oblast and back across the border in April 2022.

Over the past day, Moscow's troops have increased aviation activity near the border areas of Sumy Oblast, dropping about 30 guided aerial bombs on the settlements, Ukraine's General Staff said in its latest update. The local authorities ordered a further mandatory evacuation of border settlements.

Let's define Near the Border... What side of the border? I mean, 1 meter? 30 kilometers?

As Russia has said many times, you need a buffer zone. I think 500 km just about covers it.

Excellent points. Unless we knew who would take over no way we go with it. If this was the case then it was briefed and Ukrainian Yuri was told nope, don't do it.

We want to think some bad ass liberal democrat poet/outsider/oppostion leader is going to somehow take over when Putin goes. But not one of them has a power base, is a real threat, or the military behind him. I think the best case scenario will be either military who is tired of this shit in Ukraine and being embarrased (yeah, they know their gear sucks) or a hardline in the FSB. Either way more people fall out of windows.

The last person I want with his finger on the nukes is some damn poet.
