The craziest part about the Kursk offensive is that with the Ukrainians over the border, there is now little to limit their special operations forces from taking Russian-marked equipment and heading east out into the deep forests SE of Moscow and setting up a drone launch point in the middle of nowhere and attack other points deep in Russia proper. Take a few Russian ZIL131s and pack them up with the components for 6 large drones and take off. Once the mission is done, leave and head back to home. If the Russians find it, then go a different region next time. If not, do it again...

Yes, you are putting your spec ops guys at risk with deep behind the lines missions, but it would be worth it just to hit other targets deep into Russia to further instill the idea that no one is safe...

One of the interesting reveals in the past few weeks was how a Ukrainian special ops group was able to infiltrate into Kursk, and quite literally pull  a Dirty Dozen war game move, switched arm bands and captured an area.  The thought that they couldn't figure a way around the existing lines to pull something like this off isn't out of the question.  The Russians appear to have very little in the way of internal security to deal with this.

Ukraine Shoots Down Russian Su-25 Jet in MANPADS Strike

Ukrainian forces shot down and destroyed a Russian Su-25 ground attack aircraft in the eastern Donetsk region, Kyiv's military said on Wednesday.

"Ukrainian warriors from the 28th Mechanized Brigade shot down a Russian Su-25 plane in the Kramatorsk direction. Bravo!" Ukraine's defense ministry said in a statement posted to social media.

Newsweek contacted the Russian defense ministry by email for comment.

The Context

Russia's Air Force has suffered extensive losses since the start of Putin's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

What We Know

The country's Khortytsia group of forces operating in Donetsk said anti-aircraft units of the 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade shot down the jet using a Man-Portable Air-Defense System (MANPADS).

The jet "was trying to fire at the positions of units of the Defense Forces," it said in a statement on Telegram.

"Another Russian Su-25 burns out in the steppes of the Ukrainian Donbas," the Khortytsia group of forces said, referring to an area that comprises Ukraine's occupied Donetsk and Luhansk regions. "As of today, Russian assault aviation has one less aircraft. Its wreckage now decorates the Donetsk landscape."

The 28th Separate Mechanized Brigade shared footage on Telegram that purportedly shows the moment the Su-25 was shot down in Donetsk. "The fate of the crew is still unknown," it said.

Dutch open-source intelligence defense analysis website Oryx has visually confirmed that 112 Russian aircraft have been destroyed and 15 damaged since the start of the full-scale war in Ukraine.

Oryx has also visually confirmed that 94 Ukrainian aircraft have been destroyed since the beginning of the war, with three damaged and one captured.

The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces said in an update on Wednesday that Moscow had lost 368 aircraft since Russia launched its full-scale invasion.

Newsweek couldn't independently verify Kyiv's figures.

What's Next?

The Russian Su-25 jet was downed in the Donbas area, which faces constant shelling. The Kremlin has been pushing for the total capture of the Luhansk and Donetsk regions since Russia's initial invasion of eastern Ukraine in 2014, and it continues to make gains in these areas.

Russia is focusing much of its manpower on seizing the city of Pokrovsk, a key logistical hub for Ukrainian forces in the area.

That chute seemed to open very low to the ground, if the pilot made it, I don't think he will be on Dancing with the Stars anytime soon.

️A video compilation of 115 Russian reconnaissance drones being shot down by FPV.
🤔This initiative is fully funded by donations from ordinary Ukrainians and concerned people around the world. Surface-to-air missiles are extremely expensive. For example, the cost of a MIM-104 Patriot missile is estimated to be several million.
However, the cost of such an FPV interceptor drone does not exceed $2,000. The Russian drones in this video are worth tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars each.

A Pennsylvania ammunition plant that makes a key artillery shell in Ukraine’s fight against Russia has managed to boost production by 50% to meet surging demand, with more capacity set to come on line.

Russia continues to rapidly advance in eastern Ukraine, likely due to a total collapse of the frontlines in Pokrovsk.
Russia appears to be seizing significant positions in a matter of hours at a time, again this would reinforce the impression that Ukrainian lines have reached a total collapse.

Investors waiting for a party today on NVDA's earnings might wonder why the segment is flat today.  Part of the AI sector's confidence was shattered this morning after activist short-seller Hindenburg Research released a wild report this morning on U.S. and Taiwanese computer supplier firm Supermicro.

https://hindenburgresearch.com/smci/

In their report, Hindenburg Research alleges a history of accounting scandals at SMCI, a prior guilty plea of exporting banned components to Iran, and skirting sanctions through distribution partners to Russia, via three Turkish shell companies, among a Chinese state-run firm. Since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, they estimate one components importer has received $46.3M worth of computer components from Supermicro.

Quote
  • Besides questions around related parties and proprietary product offerings, in 2006, Super Micro pleaded guilty to a felony count of exporting banned components to Iran. The CEO said the company was in its infancy and had learned from its mistakes.
  • When Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the U.S. government imposed stringent restrictions and bans on exports to Russia of high-performance computers and components.
  • Super Micro disclosed that some of its products were subject to export bans and said it was halting all sales and had “not recorded revenue” from Russia since the day before the war started.
  • Exports of Super Micro’s high-tech components to Russia have spiked ~3x since the invasion of Ukraine, apparently violating U.S. export bans, according to our review of more than 45,000 import/export transactions.
  • At least 46 companies that handled Super Micro products to Russia since the invasion are now under OFAC sanctions or on U.S. government watchlists.
  • Almost two-thirds of Super Micro’s exports to Russia since the invasion correspond to “high priority” components that the Russian military may be diverting to the battlefield, per U.S. government warnings.
  • One of the biggest importers of Super Micro products in Russia is a supplier to one of Russia’s largest “supercomputers” at a once-secret, now-sanctioned research center. That importer, Niagara Computers, has received at least $46.3 million worth of Super Micro products since the start of the Russia-Ukraine war, per trade data.
  • The sales were initially made through a distributor in California, but were later made through 3 newly-formed Turkish shell companies, including one that was eventually sanctioned for smuggling restricted items to Russia.
  • Almost $30 million worth of Super Micro components have also been shipped to Russia’s largest importer of dual-use civilian-military chips via a newly created Hong Kong shell entity. That Russian importer is now under OFAC sanctions.
  • Since 2016, Super Micro has had a joint venture with a Chinese state-run company called Fiberhome, which is involved in a campaign of “human rights violations and abuses,” high-tech surveillance, and repression of ethnic communities in western China, per the U.S. government.
  • Super Micro has sold ~$196 million of sophisticated computer components to the joint venture since Fiberhome was watchlisted by the U.S. government in 2020. Super Micro justifies the sales by saying the JV entity itself wasn’t watchlisted, even though its partner was.

Supermicro delayed their annual filings this morning and have a 10:1 stock split scheduled for October 1.

As a bit of a student of combat, I openly confess my absolute intrique with what's happening over the skies of Ukraine/Russia. There really is a guerilla air tacts aspect to this fight and the militarized "consumer" drones is absolutely a change that I suspected was coming, but not to this extent, these levels of success and this soon. The Russia v Ukraine conflict while already important historically for a lot of reason us putting several chapters in tactical guerrilla aviation warfare books. Intriguing and great for them against the would be oppressor that is Russia.

It is essentially the history of air combat relived, but in smaller scale with a more compressed timeline.

Belarus gave some of their best equipment to the Russians and it's probably already been used for target practice by the Ukrainians.

If Belarusians start dying in Ukraine, that could start some shit in Belarus - it's not the biggest of countries.  With that said, Lukashenko is going to be careful - he's got a small military, and he needs it to stay in power.

Agree.   His main concern is having his military point their guns at their citizens, not at a faux enemy.

There were reports of former Wagner Mercenaries being sent to the border and Lukashenko should worry that they would follow guidance from Mother Russia and not him.  If they started a shooting contest or minor incursion on the border then if I was Ukraine I would assume taking Belarus would be on the table and it shouldn't be too hard.  Russia ain't got anything to help them with as it is all tied up.

Wonder what that would look like on the larger radars - I'm assuming the radar waves might pass through the balloons?

Well, I actually thought about it after Chad's post.

Using a lot, hundreds, of big mylar balloons, with grenades attached, and a small drone type of fan to drive it generally in a direction along with prevailing wind.. it could cause the Russia air defense to react. Read the reactions and rope a dope with some drones from the flank targeting big air defense after initial response and potentially expensive missile launches...

This is where my brain goes the Wednesday before college football.

Drones blowing up orcs - the last two are definitely gruesome

Let’s be clear, it’s the last one that’s not safe for humans.

I always watch these sort of vids, when they’re maybe about to get disgusting, out of the corner of my eye with a readiness to scroll. No reason to give yourself PTSD while trying to have fun right?
