I would assume they have not enough pilots for the airframes they're getting, and will keep those that they do real close to the vest.  I guess it also depends on the standoff distance of the ordinance they have.  If we give them some of the fun stuff, maybe that kicks stuff off when the ground freezes.

The number of pilots trained for the airframe has been one of the secrets that really hasn't every leaked out.  We've heard bits and pieces about the training here, but it's also been reported they have trained other pilots in Europe.  So yeah, no idea.  That said, it would seem silly to me at least, not to train about 2 to 3 deep per airframe.  Granted, it may be that this has been staggered for exactly this.

"Russian losses, again both killed and wounded in action, in just the first year of the war exceeded the total of all Soviet losses in any conflict since World War II combined," the official said.

Was it ever definitively determined if the first F16 crashed due to pilot error?

https://www.forbes.com/sites/davidaxe/2024/10/08/the-ukrainian-air-forces-new-bomber-brigade-will-fly-supersonic-french-jets/

Ex-French Dassault Mirage 2000-5 fighters will arrive in Ukraine in the first quarter of next year, French defense minister Sébastien Lecornu announced Tuesday.

But first, the delta-wing supersonic fighters “will be equipped with new equipment,” Lecornu wrote, including systems for air-ground combat and electronic warfare.

Lecornu’s comments seem to confirm what observers have suspected since France pledged surplus Mirage 2000s to the Ukrainian war effort back in June: the Ukrainian air force will arm its former French jets with the same French-made munitions it’s already hanging on its old Soviet-made Mikoyan MiG-29, Sukhoi Su-24 and Sukhoi Su-27 warplanes. These include SCALP-EG cruise missiles and Hammer glide bombs.

Armed for precision attacks on ground targets as far as 155 miles away, the single-seat, single-engine Mirages will reinforce the Ukrainian air force’s aging, swing-wing Su-24s. Meanwhile, the approximately 85—or 84, now that one has crashed—ex-European Lockheed Martin F-16s Ukraine is getting will reinforce the only slightly younger MiG-29s and Su-27s.

Surviving French Mirage 2000-5s—out of the 37 “dash-fives” Dassault built for the French air force in the 1990s—are scheduled to retire between now and 2029, but Lecornu has said their replacements, new Dassault Rafales, could arrive early and speed up the process.

With a little bureaucratic urgency, there’s no reason France couldn’t equip the Ukrainian air force with a couple of dozen Mirage 2000-5s through 2025—enough to expand the air force’s existing bomber unit, the 7th Tactical Aviation Brigade, or form a new brigade.

A second bomber brigade is the likelier outcome, given how much the 7th Tactical Aviation Brigade has already expanded in the 31 months since Russia widened its war on Ukraine.

Ukraine inherited around 200 of the 1970s-vintage Su-24s when the Soviet Union collapsed in 1991. Thirty years later, just a dozen or so of the two-seat, twin-engine bombers were still active with the 7th Tactical Aviation Brigade.

Flying into action with gravity bombs, and later glide bombs and cruise missiles, the Su-24s suffered heavy losses. The Russians have shot down no fewer than 18 of the vintage bombers, most of them early in the war before the bombers shifted to strikes with long-range munitions.

That the Ukrainians have lost more Su-24s than they had at the start of the wider war speaks to their determined effort to identify old Su-24 airframes at various storage sites and restore them to flightworthy status. Older pilots and navigators have come out of retirement to fill the jets’ cockpits.

In a recent interview with Voice of America, Col. Yevhen Bulatsyk—the 7th Tactical Aviation Brigade’s commander—said the brigade has “much more” now than it did in February 2022. More bombers. More crews.

The Ukrainian air force clearly has plans to retain the Su-24s in service for the foreseeable future. It’s even developing a new locally made glide bomb to give the bombers more weapons options.

As Mirage 2000s arrive, they could fill out a new brigade that would fight alongside the battle-hardened 7th Tactical Aviation Brigade, adding mass to the Ukrainian air force’s deep strikes on Russian warships, air-defense batteries, headquarters and supply depots in occupied southern and eastern Ukraine.

The ex-French jets will need aircrews and ground crews, of course. According to Lecornu, “the training of Ukrainian pilots and mechanics continues.”

I wonderif those clips of Orban’s EU critics were broadcast in Hungary, and if they are having any effect on his constituents?

Pure conjecture, but I doubt it since he basically controls the entirety of Hungarian media now.  If they were, it was certainly in the context of "see these assholes I have to put up with in mein kampf - I mean, my personal struggles and sacrifices for Hungary?"

Not that I am aware of.  Usually an accident investigation takes a good bit of time even in the best of times, and these certainly aren't the best of times.

This is unwelcome news. I wonder how many norks are with them?

Yeah, not great, and this is from the Ukrainians.  Not sure the extent of the damage to their hold on the Kursk region, but bad enough for them to acknowledge what is going on.  As much as I like to see and post nothing but the good guys winning and all that, unfortunately, that's not always the case.

So quickly dashing this off on my phone, but it looks like Kadryov has declared a blood feud against Russia and is revolting?

Seems regional, Dagestan and Ingushetia, and an apparent assassination attempt.

Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov has accused Russian lawmakers from neighboring regions of attempting to commission his assassination, and threatened them with a “blood feud” unless they prove otherwise, state news agency TASS reported.

TASS cited Chechen-language comments by Kadyrov, a close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin, to a meeting of Chechen security officials. Video of the meeting was published on Kadyrov’s personal Telegram channel on Wednesday.

It could be trouble in River City with a capital “T”, that rhymes with “P”, and that stands for “Putin‘s fucked”…or just his toady cronies jockeying for power and money and settling political scores.

I’d love to hear from our more knowledgeable Russian politics posters to sort it out.

Yeah, I think you nailed it. Reading the article closer it appears that Kadyrov has border disputes with both neighbors. i’m sure all his neighbors want him dead.

I went back and reread some stuff on both Dagestan and Ingushetia and their involvement with Chechnya and yeah, there is an ugly history all the way around.  Without knowing further details, and right now this is woefully unreported, it's pretty tough to say.

1.  Both regions have pretty large separatist movements.  My first inclination is to believe that this a move supported by the Kremlin for Kadryov to consolidate power in these regions and "get them in line".  The "assassination" attempt would be the flimsy excuse needed for this.  Both Dagestan and Ingushetia have suffered extreme loses in Ukraine, and there have been protests.  If the Chechens come in, problem solved for Russia as a whole.  If they get to purge a few politicians as an extra benefit, sauce for the goose.  This would be my bet.

2.  At the same time, there is history with both regions and Chechnya dating back from the Chechen War, and prior, (both fought against the Chechens) though both have large Chechen populations (pre and post refugees).  So is possible that this is old bad blood spilling out? I'd say yes.

3.  Are there Muscovite PMs that view Kadyrov and his regime negatively and want him gone?  Absolutely.  There is definitely a large segment of Russia that views Chechens as Islamic trash.

4.  Putin basically installed the Kadyrov family (Ramzan's father was assassinated) and has tolerated them for years, so it seems unlikely he would want rid of him; and if he did want rid of him, it'd be done publicly and obvious.

5.  Could it be a power-play entirely initiated Kadyrov who sees an opportunity expand his power?  Yes.

Without much in the way of detail, any of that is possible.  Also, the only sources we are getting right now are far from trustworthy.  Hopefully we get more attention  paid to the story by journalists and get actual analysis from real experts.

If you don't think there are NATO pilots in those birds...well get your head checked.

Retired or otherwise. Those guys and girls live for this shit.

So apparently the crew was killed, which indicates to me they had no idea they'd been painted.  Shot down 30 miles beyond the lines, so the kill could have come from 80 to 100 miles out, depending on the weapon.  Impressive stuff.

Reuters on the Grozny explosion. Gas station, yet the Leader says those responsible will be held accountable? Yeah, terrorism not utilities. So his troops withdraw from Ukraine front and head into the mountains. Means Russia does not have its retreat stopping mechanism in place.

MOSCOW, Oct 12 (Reuters) - Two children were among four people who were killed on Saturday after a blast at a fuel station in the Chechen capital Grozny, the Russian region's emergencies ministry said.
Authorities said a fuel tank had exploded at the station, resulting in a fire, with five more people injured.
Ramzan Kadyrov, the leader of Chechnya, said on Telegram that he had taken the situation under his personal control. He said that those responsible for the blast would be brought to justice, but did not give further details.

Explosions at fuel stations in the neighbouring region of Dagestan in September 2024 and August 2023 killed 13 people and 35 people, respectively.

Russian forces have launched an offensive in the Velyka Novosilka axis, Zaporizhzhia region, and have reportedly made some advances, according to Vanek Nikolaev, a well-regarded Ukrainian correspondent. The Velyka Novosilka axis was one of the directions in which Ukraine launched its 2023 summer offensive and managed to recapture territory.

He compared the situation to the events in Vovchansk (Kharkiv region) in May, where despite reports of being "ready," it turned out they were not. Currently, Russian forces have reportedly advanced towards the settlements of Levadne and Novodarivka.
