Alien-like US spy drone dodges Russian jamming, powering Ukraine’s defense

Spoiler

United States-based defense technology firm Shield AI has announced that its alien-like vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) V-BAT drone demonstrated its ability to dodge electronic warfare countermeasures in Ukraine.

Shield AI also stated that the V-BAT has crossed 23 deployments, including the ones operational in Ukraine, as it delivers “Group 5 capability at Group 3 costs.”

The company also says that the drone is helping multiple other countries and armies carry out intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) and targeting operations around the globe. This includes its use in the Caribbean Sea to carry out anti-drug trafficking operations.

Electronic warfare is used against unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as a countermeasure to immobilize them. Their use has been on the rise in the Russia-Ukraine war, with both sides actively using them on the front.

V-BAT drones helping Ukrainian forces
Shield AI had confirmed V-BAT deployment in Ukraine back in June 2024.

Since then, it has been used countless times in Ukraine, but the use has not been confirmed by either the forces or Shield AI.

“In Ukraine, V-BAT demonstrated resilience against electronic warfare, showcasing autonomy in the toughest conditions and completing the first successful long-endurance, long-duration ISR and targeting mission while GPS and comms were jammed,” the company said in its year-ender newsletter published on December 31, 2024.

In September 2023, Shield AI announced the successful demonstration of three V-BAT UAS working together autonomously.

It was achieved through the use of Hivemind AI pilot, a software that enables multiple drones to coordinate and collaborate on complex missions.

The three V-BATs were used in a simulated scenario where they had to detect, identify, locate, and report (DILR) on wildfires.

The drones performed the task without relying on GPS or communications, demonstrating their potential for dual-use applications in civilian and military domains.

It is this feature that Shield AI claims has been brought into use in real-world situations in the Ukraine war.

Shield AI’s drone capabilities
On December 20, through a blog post, Shield AI stated that it aims to enhance the autonomy of V-BAT drones to such an extent that one operator would be able to manage up to 10 drones simultaneously.

This will be made possible by the use of autonomy in the drones, as they can respond to changing mission requirements at a fast pace.

“Autonomy in defense must reduce operator workload by enabling UAS to independently manage tasks such as loitering, communication losses, and rerouting. With high-level autonomy, V-BAT can make rapid in-theater adjustments, allowing operators to focus on mission-critical decisions rather than routine controls,” the company said.

The autonomy algorithms on the V-BAT drone operate entirely onboard, as opposed to the regular UAVs, where calculations are done at a command center.

The V-BAT drone has a length of 9 feet and a wingspan of 9.7 feet – with a payload capacity of 25 lbs. The full weight of the drone (fuel + payload) can reach 125 lbs, during a mission. It has a service ceiling of 20,000 feet, and an endurance of 10+ hours, as it can vary on payload and aircraft configurations.

My Xmas gift from the kiddos was a note....

"It's in the mail on the way to Austin, but it's coming from Ukraine so it will take a little while.

Destroyed BMP from the Battle of Kyiv, chopped up and recycled by creators from Bucha.  One of those pieces is now yours."

Pretty solid fucking Christmas gift.

no pic?

To send a message they should send 1-2 to either moscow or st. petersburg every evening. Or every third day. It is so funny watching all the incoming flights to St. Petersburg circling over the tundra then diverting to moscow. And maybe one night hit the Palace in Sochi just to show that they can.

This EW resistant (proof?) UAV appears to be a global friends-maker. We’re selling it to Brazil and manufacturing it in India.

Drop some into the Kremlin next month on the anniversary…

This has got to be both exhausting Russian air defenses, but also forcing them to redeploy what they have left.  And if they move them around, their chances of being spotted go up.

These defense industry lobbyists need to be in the Oval Office day one talking about what great advertising for US defense products this war is and how much money they’re making for America and somehow figure out a way to let tfg know he can get his beak wet too.

It’s ugly, craven, and corrupt, but it’s the only way the people of Ukraine will get US support the next four years.

I wouldn't be surprised if Putin has offered him points on the Ukrainian gas fields in Donbas

Were I that sales rep, I'd absolutely promote the positive push his rating would get and the impact on social media, and talk dollars while dropping a hint that A+ was for sale and the UAE was extremely interested in the product.

I'd also drop clues that I frequently heard in back channels how much this product pisses off Putin.

Sell the client not the product, and kick backs are extremely dirty and not my flavor but if it meant helping Ukrainian troops...

Why? I mean if that is your thing no worries. But why?

Because I chronicle absurd Russian women worldwide.  I have a picture of a Russian chick in fuzzy pink shoes hiking at a rugged Armenian monastery, another (pretty good lookin') Russian chick making duck lips in front of the Mona Lisa, and this gal standing at Neuschwanstein Castle.  It's a real collection.

I actually shoulda snuck a shot of one of the boy's profs at JGU in Mainz.  We were on campus to check it out, and as we were waiting for our tram, he pointed out his prof.  She's a Ukrainian gal, mid-30s.....looked almost exactly like you'd expect.  Bleache blonde, a little cheap-ish, but in a "hell yeah" kinda way.  I was interested.

Beauty came from Disaster

Hello!
Our names are Vitaly and Olga, we are a creative married couple from Ukraine.
I live in the city of Bucha, where our workshop is located, in which Olga and I created and continue to create our unique handmade.

But the war took us by surprise, and we lost access to our workshop, as well as to my house in the city of Bucha, were left without work and livelihood.
In the first weeks of the war, it was very difficult for us, we were left with practically no money and with a meager supply of food.

But having gathered our strength, we decided that we need to try to do something in order to survive.
Having found several wooden blanks at Olga's house, in the city of Kyiv, to the sound of explosions, we began to draw our boxes in order to try to somehow sell them and earn a living.

After we got on our feet, thanks to our products and caring people like Melissa, we began to help other people in need of help in Ukraine.
Also, we are actively trying to help our army, because we understand: If you do not help your army today, then tomorrow you will feed the army of the enemy.
So I started holding charity auctions, where I put our products up for auction, and with all the money we get, we buy the right goods for our soldiers.
All donations sent to us for our soldiers go to their destination.

You can see detailed photo reports about the help of the army on our Instagram.
Therefore, by buying our products from us, you support not only our family, but people, homeless animals and our Ukrainian army.

For which many thanks to you!
