They haven't attacked Russia with our weapons systems because we told them not to if they wanted to keep the weapons pipeline open.

If Ukraine wants to build their own stuff and explode it in Russia, that's fantastic.  But as mentioned upthread, when ATACMs bits with English start winding up littering Russian cities, the game will have changed significantly.  So we need to be mindful of whether we want that to happen.  Maybe we do.  Maybe we don't.

No shit.

As we’re discussing Patriots, it’s worth remembering that both the Obama and Trump admins AGONIZED over giving Ukraine a fee dozen Javelins. This was a bid to mollify the Russians and as we see, it didn’t work.

It’s an open question if a more comprehensive and aggressive strategy of arming Ukraine would have deterred the war or resulted in a decisive victory in the early stages. We saw what just those Javelins did. This debate is at least as relevant as the “NATO baited Russia into this,” but you won’t get as serious a debate over whether a more aggressive posture could have led to peace. Time to reframe.

Speaking of reframing that’s where I am. Like the bully that keeps picking at a smaller kid I’m just about tired of the Russian’s shit. I don’t want to kickoff WWIII but it’s beyond time to give Ukraine the ability to retaliate against those missile attacks coming from within Russia.

1234.  If Putin and the Russians are not decisively put in their place, this shit will keep repeating as long as Putin is in charge.

And from all accounts, the Ukrainians are carefully fucking with bridges, roads, etc. to isolate various Russian groups, or at the very least to limit the number of supply routes they have in/out of certain areas.  Hundreds of Russians are literally going to freeze to death the way things are going.

Listening to a panel at the Clements Center at UT.  Do your own research on to how they tilt.  Wall to wall former and current national security and foreign affairs experts.  Holy shit, I had no idea how close we were to really leaving NATO.  I mean obviously the military head of NATO saying his grave concern has been assuaged. but Exit plans were already in motion on the part of our European Allies.  But then, I don’t have access to the same deep

dive tweets so many of My

fellow morons so

take it with a grain of salt.

what that dude said.  People seriously connected to the issue in the past indicated last night it was so much closer to happening than most of us realized at the time.  Former Admiral/NSA leadership, very recent CIA leadership, et. al.  All were gravely concerned and back-channeling to former NATO friends in leadership to assuage their concerns while current US DoD/Intel community folks were working to calm down the children at the adult table.  I kinda had some anxiety about it years ago, but now that's been a few years and a few drinks in, these folks were indicating that it was real fucking close to being put to paper.  Incredible.

We're gonna look back on the last 6 years and wonder what the fuck happened.  history will not be kind to out tolerance of ineptitude.  Viva Ukraine!

Hell, Zelensky's gonna turn out to be a better real estate developer of Russian lands than that fatfuck.  Granted, most of the real estate will demo'd and probably never rebuilt but you can't put a price on the goodwill value.

Ask Eric, he'll tell you.  We just bought property behind the Desna River...on the good side!

Little bit of a different situation. Can't really move around a Patriot battery very quickly. But I expect any Patriots deployed in Ukraine would be well behind the line and really only targetable by long range cruise and ballistic missiles and suicide drones. And they would have to defend them with a large number of short and medium range systems as well, particularly for things like suicide drone strikes (especially since you aren't spending a million dollar patriot missile on a $50k drone).

Which is also why Putin's decision to eventually invade Ukraine multiplies the stupid factor by aggy squared. If he had just stayed the course of magnifying dissent in the West, continued to expand the need for Russian energy (Nordstream 2), and maintained the appearance of a non-aggresor then there could have been a good chance that NATO would have disbanded. Achieving his strategic objective of not having a hostile, unified European presence on his borders plus more political freedom to push whatever agenda that they wanted going forward. Albeit that would have been a much longer time frame (5-15 yrs) and Putin wouldn't have been around to soak up that glory of restoring USSR 2: Kremlin's Boogaloo.

Shit, the team does that in the second half but you don't see them invading Ukraine

Because our defense in the second half of a battle, can't tankle.  I mean tank.  I mean tackle.  I mean tinkle.  Wait that's me, I mean.

Yeah Russia under Putin was doing just fine in undermining the West with a page straight out of socialist rule (you know that thing many of are these days 'socialist'...apparently).  Find the stupidest people in a population, turn them against the non-stupids by telling them the non-stupids are the stupids and they (the stupids) are the non-stupids and that they have had their way of life stolen by others and only a leader of stupids who aren't really stupids (spoiler alert, they are) can rescue them in exchange for massive upticks in power and legal leeway.  Worked in Russia, then they figured they could disrupt us by exporting that moronic platform here.  Spoiler alert..............it worked.

Moral of the story...the most classic blunder isn't getting involved in a land war in Eurasia.  It's never underestimate the stupidity of stupid people who think they aren't stupid by being extra stupid.  I mean, it does work for awhile.  But eventually you die alone tweeting to nobody on the toilet with a bagful of Wendy's between your shoes with your tie dipping into your frosty.

Putin could have had it made in the shade.  A crippled West, a defiled NATO, a somewhat expansive Russia to die in the embrace of.  But he traded it all for an obese lapdog with the loyalty of a scrotal cyst, a humiliating defeat in Ukraine, and a more cohesive (not perfect, but better than before) Europe/West.  A pause to global progress was always inevitable...I just didn't think it would be this humiliating for some of y'all (including Russia).  There's a few more "it's not fair!" tantrums to be endured but in the end, people like this always go away.  It's inevitable.  Let them pout, there are no shortages of meat hooks on which to hang enemies of the state.  /Heydrich
