If the oligarchs believe that they will be killed off for real or contrived reasons, they could hit a point where they decide to move against Putin before he moves against them.  With Ukraine going so poorly, he needs scapegoats and he’s already sending officers that have been deemed to be poor leaders into the front lines with the fresh meat.  Rich people who are known to Russians as a whole are all that’s left for him to use - some mid-level bureaucrat that nobody has ever heard of won’t keep the mob satisfied,

The “oligarch” class in Russia no longer exists in the way we usually talk about them.  There are fabulously wealthy people who are dependent on the benevolence of the Putin system, and even those are being slowly replaced by beneficiaries of semi and quasi-state enterprises.  Putin has been most successful consolidating his dynamic of power at home.

I should get one of these and try it out in San Marcos around spring time for research purposes. Sewell park would work.

The Texas State sugar babies will be impressed with a guy that can spend $195k on an ounce and a half drone. Surly that price tag has to be wrong.

Full text of the letter that the late Murz promised to publish before killing himself. The letter was authored by a serviceman of the 1487 Regiment of the RF armed formations which took part in the Avdiivka battle.

It lists the lack of weapons and transport provided, losses of 70% of the regiment, complete lack of medical examinations and treatment, and transfer to the "Veterans" PMC which is connected to Putin himself. This PMC consists of criminals who do not show up on the frontline but claim the "successes" of the regiment.

The main complaint from Murz was that this 1487 Regiment was not even mentioned in Putin's telegram listing units that took part in the occupation of Avdiivka.

Very telling interview with a Russian collaborator and a faux governor of Zaporizhzhia Oblast Yevgeny Balitsky about what was happening to Ukrainians who opposed Russian occupation at the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

Not only does Balitsky openly admit to forced deportations (which are war crimes) but he also hints at executions of the pro-Ukrainian residents of Melitopol.

It’d be interesting to know how his new masters feel about Balitsky allowing people he knew to ‘escape’.

FYI: When Balitsky talks about not being a Tolstoy follower he's referring to the Tolstoyan movement that is comprised of Christian pacifists.

Two years after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Western sanctions have failed in their most important task—stopping the Kremlin’s war machine.

Western officials and experts say the financial, economic, military and energy sanctions imposed on Russia since February 2022 have damaged Russia’s economy and arms-production capacity, and will create serious problems for the Kremlin in the coming years. But they acknowledge the restrictions have hit more slowly than they hoped.

Take that $300 billion on Russian assets that are frozen and give them to Ukraine to counter that.  The fact that Russians have been pulling more T-55s into the theater does speak to the fact that the sanctions have some effect.

This is going to be interesting:

This week, Western countries are adopting new sanctions against Russia. For the first time, the European Union will target companies from mainland China when its measures are announced on Saturday, officials say, shifting from efforts to persuade Beijing not to undercut sanctions to a more forceful approach.

And on that note China is showing that Russia is their forever friend...unless money gets in the way. With their own economic problems they aren't quite as willing to challenge any sanctions. At least publicly. I'm sure there are plenty of work around but at the minimum this has to be driving up the price on any black market deals.

Main thing though is that we have to keep Ukraine militarily supplied long enough for economic stranglehold to take effect. Putin's all out offensives is to make his position appear as the winning position. In time for his elections in March, the EU Parliament elections in June, and their our own in November. He has to appear as strong as possible to deter any more aid going to Ukraine. Because Russia is not going to win if this becomes a wallet flop out challenge with the West.

China's biggest banks are finally getting scared by the West's sanctions against Russia
Huileng Tan Feb 21, 2024, 2:08 AM ET

Three of China's Big Four state banks have stopped accepting payments from sanctioned Russian financial institutions, per Izvestia.
The halt follows the EU's 12th sanctions package against Russia and US secondary sanctions.
The West is now targeting international firms doing business with Russia.

Three out of China's Big Four state banks have halted payments from sanctioned Russian financial institutions, Russia's Izvestia news outlet reported on Wednesday.

The Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank, and Bank of China have stopped the transactions since the start of 2024, Alexey Poroshin, the general director of investment and consulting firm First Group, told Izvestia.

While the three Chinese banks informed their Russian clients of the move in January, the issues started in December — after the European Union imposed its 12th sanctions package against Russia, Poroshin said. In December, the US also authorized secondary sanctions targeting financial institutions that help Russia skirt sanctions.

Chinese banks are tightening compliance checks with Russian businesses because they fear getting caught up in the West's increasingly restrictive sanctions regime against Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

Poroshin told the Izvestia that Chinese banks are now unwilling to do business with sanctioned firms because the trade balance between the US and China is far greater than that of China and Russia.

Industrial and Commercial Bank of China, China Construction Bank, and Bank of China did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Business Insider.

The West has been ramping up sanctions against Russia as its economy appears resilient even two years after its invasion of Ukraine triggered sweeping trade restrictions. This is partly because Russia has diverted its trade eastward, particularly with China and India.

In particular, Russian firms trading internationally have become more dependent on Chinese institutions and the Chinese yuan since some Russian banks withdrew from the SWIFT global financial-messaging system.

So, the West is now trying to find a way to break Russia's economy by targeting international firms still doing business with the country instead.

The Kremlin has acknowledged issues with Chinese bank transactions, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov saying earlier this month that authorities are "working" on addressing them with Beijing.

It’s fascinating, and dangerous. In 2000, weren’t Russia and China’s combined population about 1/4 of the world? They’ve managed things to where their 2050 combined population may be 1/8 of the world’s.

They can respond by:

1. accepting relegation to irrelevance

2.  - fundamentally change so as to invite immigration

3. Start wars of expansion

4. Force people to have babies.

China, of course, wants to explore option 4, but it may not be successful. Option 2 seems unlikely. What’s left?

Russia's population has been flat at about 145M in 2000 and the same now. China's population was 1.2B and is now 1.4B. What this means is that it doesn't make any sense to combine China's and Russia's population in 2000 or 2024. Russia's population is irrelevant in the discussion.

Demographic projections have Russia’s population dropping to 120 million by 2050. China has also started the big drop- single child policy leading to married couples having to support both sets of parents, leading to a lack of desire for more children (both spouses must work). They are in a bad way, and they see what’s coming, which is why the future is very dicey.

Russia making a move on Transnistria? Does Putin think this will lend more domestic support for his election and mass conscription? Or is he feeling good about where things are heading with western political support?

️The so-called "Transnistrian congress" will ask Moscow to annex Transnistria to Russia — Transnistrian opposition.

According to a Transnistrian opponent Ghenadie Ciorba, quoted by INFOTAG, the so-called MPs of all levels of Transnistria are going to adopt a request to Moscow regarding the accession of the separatist region to the Russian Federation.

Ciorba drew attention to the fact that the meeting will take place one day before the address of Putin to the Federal Assembly. The Transnistrian opposition does not rule out that this directive to organize the congress comes from Moscow itself.

Ciorba assumes that the next day, on February 29, Putin will announce this request to the Assembly Federal, which will decide to proceed with the request.

The opponent believes that the assembly in Tiraspol and the protest organized there recently against the so-called economic pressures of the Republic of Moldova are aimed at showing that the residents of Transnistria are against Chisinau.

"This is where the recent statement of the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov, comes from, that Moscow will not let its citizens in Transnistria suffer," Ciorba said.

He called on the so-called MPs of the region to prevent the adoption of this decision, which would give Putin "a legitimate excuse to strike the territory of the Republic of Moldova, including Transnistria, under any pretext."

Could the Russians reenforce Transnistria if they wanted to? Seems like existing Patriot batteries could do a good job covering the approaches by air and it would be easy to cover what appears to be the only sea lane. Round up the 2,000 or so Russian soldiers and tell Russia to get fucked.
