And unlike Netflix and Disney this is big fucking news.  Good luck with shipping without FedEx UpS and the big maritime shippers.

Russia won’t recover economically.  It is going to be ugly to watch , I am not going to take any joy in the suffering of their people as the economy  reverts back to being a fuel pump.

Won’t take joy in their suffering but not going to lose sleep over it , either.

Germany not capable of maintaining any semblance of sanity for more than 24 hours. Looks like Scholz got way out over his skis in announcing the Bundeswehr increase and he is now starting to pay for it in the press. Rank-and-file in both the Greens and his own SPD are livid, including the leader of the Young Socialists. This coaltion is fucked...might not be now, might not be tomorrow...but sooner rather than later, its done.

Deutschland gonna Deutschland.

No wonder, the members of the Greens, like the citizens throughout the country, had only heard at this moment about the amount of the planned blessing of money for the armed forces. According to WELT information, even Minister of Economic Affairs Robert Habeck and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (both Greens) only learned about the details of the special fund during the Chancellor speech in plenary. Scholz had only agreed with Finance Minister and FDP leader Christian Lindner.

In the SPD and the Greens, several MEPs now feel taken by surprise. We are talking about a proposal that is not rational and also not serious. Which is not guided by foreign policy requirements and the needs of the Bundeswehr.

Others are fearing that the prices of armaments will be massively increased if such spending is announced not over a long period of time, but only for one year. In short: There is resistance to the Scholz plan - even within his own party.

...

Previously, MEP and Juso (Young SPD) leader Jessica Rosenthal had announced that she would not support Chancellor Scholz's plans. "There is no point in sinking another billions of euros into a black hole," she told the Süddeutsche Zeitung. She believes that the funds for the Bundeswehr have so far been used ineffectively. There is also displeasure among other SPD members.

First taken by surprise, then irritated - Red-Green resistance to Scholz's 100 billion plan
Status: 9:48 pm

The Traffic Light Coaltion was surprised by Scholz's increase in funding for the Bundeswehr, even Habeck and Baerbock were probably not informed in advance. Parliamentarians from the SPD and the Greens are irritated. An agreement in the coalition agreement could become a problem for the chancellor.

When Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) ended his government statement in the Bundestag last Sunday after 29 minutes, the members of the traffic light coalition and even the Union faction rose to applaud. In any case, since the government declaration, careful to give a picture of unity, the factions of the SPD, Greens and FDP also tried to show demonstrative agreement during the special session.

But already with the Chancellor's announcements about the equipment of the Bundeswehr, there were clear cracks. And they have now become trenches.

The Greens and parts of the SPD are irritated by Scholz's announcements - about the large sums that are in the room and how they are to be raised. But above all about the fact that the Chancellor has practically presented Parliament and apparently even parts of his cabinet with fait accompli.

One of the lessons from the Russian invasion of Ukraine is that they want to equip the Bundeswehr better quickly. Scholz announced that a one-off special fund of 100 billion euros is now to be set up in the federal budget 2022 and from now on two percent of gross domestic product is to be invested in defense every year.

An FDP member describes the reaction in the ranks of the Greens to this passage of the government declaration as follows: "They were frozen, there was disbelief in the faces."

Others are fearing that the prices of armaments will be massively increased if such spending is announced not over a long period of time, but only for one year. In short: There is resistance to the Scholz plan - even from his own party.

"We can talk about higher investments for the Bundeswehr, but simply pouring the troops with more money does not solve the problems there," says SPD member Sebastian Roloff. In addition, an increase in funding must not be at the expense of other projects.

The party left Ralf Stegner says: "It is consensus in the group that the Bundeswehr must be equipped in such a way that it can fulfill its mission. From my point of view, it is also okay to increase the funds for the armed forces," says the long-standing head of the SPD in Schleswig-Holstein. Nevertheless, we must not only rely on the Bundeswehr factor. If we only talk about the military, Putin won."

There were no figures in the application

Previously, MEP and Juso leader Jessica Rosenthal had announced that she would not support Chancellor Scholz's plans. "There is no point in sinking another billions of euros into a black hole," she told the Süddeutsche Zeitung. She believes that the funds for the Bundeswehr have so far been used ineffectively. There is also displeasure among other SPD members.

Like the Liberals, they had been summoned together for a parliamentary group meeting one hour before the start of the special session in the Bundestag. "One could have expected to be informed about the details," several MEPs are angry. Especially when you talk about such large sums.

There were no figures in the later adopted motion by Ampel and the Union to increase funds, which was available at the group meeting. The assumption of some MEPs: Chancellor Scholz knew that there would be no majority for this within the SPD and Green Groups. The Greens had even written the rejection of NATO's "non-qualities and competence-oriented" two percent target in the election program.

The FDP is still most likely to live with the increase in the coalition. At least as long as the debt brake defended by Finance Minister Lindner is not affected. But even the Liberals consider only higher defense spending to be insufficient.

"More money for the Bundeswehr alone is too short," says the parliamentary managing director of the FDP parliamentary group, Stephan Thomae, WELT. "We also need to redefine the tasks of the force and adapt the structures."

The Greens, on the other hand, who are rooted in the peace movement and have had a difficult relationship with the Bundeswehr and NATO for a long time, are basically struggling with the billion-dollar package for the force. There is talk of "armament" and a new arms race.

The German armaments budget has already increased by more than a third since 2015, calculates the labor and social policy spokesman of the Greens in the Bundestag, Frank Bsirske. "If 50 billion euros in armaments expenditure is not enough, you must first of all ask what is going wrong, but not throw additional money behind," says the former Ver.di chairman.

It was all the more astonishing how vehemently the ministers Baerbock and Habeck defended the billion-dollar package in the Bundestag. The security policy spokeswoman for the Green parliamentary group, Sara Nanni, also says that she is pleased with the political will to close "ability gaps" in the Bundeswehr. An increase in military expenditure is necessary for this.

However, Nanni points out what is also up to some of the coalition partners: "However, we cannot spend 100 billion euros only on the Bundeswehr within a year," says the peace and conflict researcher. "For the planned special fund, a holistic concept of security would make sense, which includes defense as well as energy and food security as well as greater resilience of the previously mediocrely protected critical infrastructure from cyber attacks and sabotage actions."

Most recently, for example, a massive disruption to the European satellite Internet had restricted the operation of thousands of wind turbines in Central Europe. The disruption occurred with the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. The US operating company, which is also active for military services, suspects hacker attacks as the cause. Finance Minister Lindner had announced in his speech that the funds would only be used for "necessary material" and "necessary technology" of the Bundeswehr.

The budgetary spokesman for the Green parliamentary group, Sven-Christian Kindler, also considers an increase in defense spending to be "right, sensible and targeted". However, structural reforms are needed "so that additional billions are used effectively and efficiently and do not simply seep away," says Kindler. And: "A narrowing of security policy solely to the question of defense spending falls short."

His group colleague Nanni also considered it an important investment in response to Russia's invasion that rising gas prices do not have to be "exaceated by the population" by the EU sanctions. There is a great openness in her group for the expansion of expenditure. Nanni also demands that the coalition groups must discuss how exactly the special fund will be designed. "We must control expenditure parliamentaryly to ensure transparency."

An agreement from the coalition agreement could also cause problems. It had been stated there that with increasing defense spending "on a single scale", expenditure on civil crisis prevention, humanitarian aid and development cooperation should increase. With every euro more for the Bundeswehr, expenditure in these areas would have to increase to the same extent. Nanni says: "I assume that it will remain with the negotiated agreement."

Good old bentonite. AKA the stuff that cat litter was usually made of.

Swelling clay that is simultaneously sticky and slippery. It's fucking awful to walk, drive, or do anything else on.

Everything gets stuck in bentonite. Nothing moves over it until it dries.

We’ll see how things play out but the important thing here is that absolutely no on doubts that’s something he might do.

Putin might absolutely knock down the Alamo out of spite in your hypothetical.  Whether he does or not doesn’t really matter in this context. It’s kinda splitting hairs when there’s video of your forces blowing up apartments at your order.

Neither Hitler nor Stalin -- who pulled down some amazing churches to put the institution in its place -- destroyed it. Why on earth would Putin?

Putin is old and doesn't understand a Ukraine that has been "free" for 30 years. Its as simple as that. He assumed young people wanted to be under Moscow even though they had no memory of being Soviet.

Dude, Putin doesn't give a fuck about the 'will' of people.  He is just a piece of dick.

Because he is an asshole and a piece of dick. I don’t know if he will be down in the Stalin category but he’s making a late push.

That’s what I don’t understand

The plans were written by guys who get driven in limos around paved streets in cities.

I mean, the British have seen a rainy day or two, and have plenty of reclaimed marshes themselves, yet couldn't foresee the gunk they were sending troops into in WW1 in the piece of continental Europe nearest to London.

In every war there is propaganda and in this new age we live in we are exposed to more of it than ever. The first thing I ask about any Tweet coming from "official sources" in the Ukraine is "whose interest does this serve." Putin destroying that church out of spite would instantly ignite street protests bordering on riots all over Russia. If there is excommunication in the Orthodox church, he would jump to the front of the list. He would lose his mantle as savior of Holy Mother Russia. I mean, I wish a n----a would. It would be his death warrant.

I also wish Americans would learn some skepticism.

True, but also bitterly learned personal experience.

1 day of hard rain can cost 3 days of field work waiting for that shit to dry. It also makes it a bitch even walking around camp.

It's fucking miserable. Yet another major Russian failure. That would have been frozen a month ago and they could have rolled over it.

The world will not accept a Ukraine that is half Russian, with all key areas Putin's.  It won't.  If that's Putin's line in the sand, then his forces are going to continue to bleed from an insurgency with some pretty effective fucking weapons.

And yes, the sanctions and ostracism will only get worse, not better, in that situation.

The Russian people are going to be isolated, frustrated, angry, and soon enough, hungry.  Putin's situation is unsustainable right now.  He MIGHT be able to negotiate for a solution that lets Russia keep Crimea, and allows for some sort of special autonomy and "protection" for Russian speakers in eastern Ukraine.  But I don't think he'd be satisfied with that, so I don't see an off ramp here.

Yeah,  I think the Ukrainians are even less likely to go pack to the 2014-2022 status quo than they were before the invasion.  If I'm them I say fuck off and get out of all of it, Crimea, Donbass, etc. So Putain may have actually lost leverage with this invasion and the resolution is go back to 2012 borders and control.

Putin can paint that pig any way he wants to for domestic consumption but he still sent thousands of kids to die and spent money he stole from the army to do it.

There is no resolution until Putin is dead.

I think they wanted and were planning to invade earlier.  The Olympics of all things got them.  I think that was part of his meeting with Xi and the other was the offensive blitz of intelligence launched by the US.  Each time they put some out, they got delayed by another week.
