The USAF wants to divest the A-10 fleet but it has always run into other issues along the way in D.C. The Army is in favor of keeping them but they don't have to fund the NGAD. I love the A-10s but we learned a lot in Afghanistan about CAS and how other airframes can support that need.

Combined with the re-winging cost and parts scarcity the A-10 is expensive to fly regarding 4th gen fighters.

Like most American males of my age, I love the A-10.  I really do.  But I also love the Corsair.  And it seems that the time has come and gone for both.

From what I know/see, the A-10 does a pretty good job of CAS in a counter-insurgency capacity (where the enemy really doesn't have any air power or AA capacity), or maybe even against a legit nation state over which we have total air superiority.  An A-10 loitering over an area to deliver CAS when needed seems to work pretty well.

So I don't know how well this will work in Ukraine.  While Russia doesn't control the skies....neither does Ukraine.  Russia still has plenty of functioning AA (with which they even shoot down THEIR OWN planes sometimes), and they still have plenty of functioning aircraft that could smoke an A-10 in an intercept.  If Ukraine can get some mileage out of this old airframe, maybe it's worth a shot.  But if using them ends up costing Ukraine 30 of its valuable pilots, maybe not so much.

The point being, I think we all may need to accept that the A-10 is a concept whose time has come and gone, as demonstrated by the modern battlefield, effective MANPADs etc., effective infantry weapons that take out vehicles very well (javelin), and a variety of drones.

I like the 30mm gun on the A-10, but with the Russian AA systems and MANPADS, it would be costly to get into range to use it, or Maverick missiles for that matter.  Where I think the Warthog could help is in suppression of air defense systems, if it can carry HARMs.  I am not familiar enough with the load out of the A-10 to know if that is even possible.  Ukraine needs some Wild Weasels to knock down the Russian SAM systems.  That would be a good start toward air superiority, if not supremacy.

Remember in the beginning of the war, that if we gave Ukraine American planes, then Putin would nuke everyone?

This. If there’s one place we’ve misstepped, it’s in failing to set our own lines when it comes to “unacceptable” escalation.

“We will provide Ukraine with the resources they need to defend their sovereignty and territory, based off of our own assessments and the requests of the Ukrainian government. It is obvious that these resources pose no threat to Russian Federation forces so long as those forces remain inside the Russian Federation. We won’t engage in speculation about any Russian response to the provision of these resources.”

I think this is a bit of "Monday Morning Quarterbacking" - we really didn't know how far to go until we saw we could get away with more and more and that Putin's threats were empty.

Experienced in bridge repair and construction? Then you too can find work in sunny Kherson, with no more cares than a bug about to splatter on a windshield. We can't stop the Ukrainians from making you one with the bridge rubble, but we probably already blew up all their HIMARs so come on down.

Yeah, the WARMATE ones actually seem to be better than the US ones we gave them. I've been seeing a lot of the Russian propagandists still on Twitter like Russians with Attitude and Armchair Warlord complaining about these strikes. Saying it's not fair they get called for war crimes when they bomb nuclear power plants, but when Ukraine hits Russia's invading army who turned it into a military base with precision rounds they get a free pass.

No idiots it's not a double standard, it's cause and effect. Russia shouldn't be there in the first place. There is a difference between an aggressor force invading territory and destroying property and lives vs a defending force trying to push the invaders out.

We know the Russians will yowl about all this for the next 800 years, it'll just be what they do. "Hey Honey, let's take the flying car to Moscow and listen to the Russians yowl."

There were plenty of people saying at the time that limiting ourselves with statements like "we'll do this, but we won't go THIS far!" was foolish and pointless.

Let’s remember that for years we had debates over whether Javelins would be too escalatory. Which was patently absurd, as is the debate over the equipment provided now. Anything we could ever provide Ukraine would only ever be used inside Ukraine, as Ukraine defended itself. Short of a B-2 or SSBN.

The fact is we we defanged ourselves by allowing Russia to set the tone of the debate and the bounds of rationality. Had we stepped in and defined them ourselves, we could have been a bit ahead of this. It is MMQB, but it’s also important to recognize.

Eh, I look at it more as being brought to a slow boil. Russia has been sitting in the pot not realizing how hot it has gotten. I think our approach has generally been very good. The idea that we could have gone all in at the very beginning and had the same timid Russian response is fanciful and pure speculation.

When the price for being wrong is a nuclear exchange I'm fine with being cautious and the "slow boil" as Dahobbs calls it.

A couple of thoughts I have.  Had we gone all at the very beginning, would Germany be doing even less than they are now?  Would Sweden and Finland still be applying for NATO?  I know Ukraine is in great pain, but I'm not sure there was a better way to play things with the information we had available.  The reality is, we screwed up years ago in Crimea by not acting appropriately.

Yeah, we had some pretty healthy debates on that topic back on the old site. Too bad it can't be revisited.

Talked to our server at our favorite mountain restaurant last week.  She's from Belarus (here on a work visa).  Said her family has told her to forget about them and never come home.  It was hard to hear.  Just need to remember that there are a lot of folks in Belarus and Russia who don't support this bullshit.

sad to hear stuff like that...

but we have rules here.   unless we are talking brun hilda  when you say female belarussian here on a work visa... most of our minds imagine..

Fucking this. The "oh gosh what if we make Russia mad" time has passed. Throw everything you have at any Russian within Ukrainian territory. Kill all of them as quickly and ruthlessly as possible.

You gotta use the Tijuana Scrip Club Phone Camera trick, brought to us by one of @Zepol87's crew:

Act like you got a call, hold the thing to your head, turn sideways and photograph.

Or just ask the server to titty-bump your wife for a FB pic.

Hey honey, can you give her a hug real quick?  A little closer.   Just touch titties already so I can snap it.
