I got upgraded to 8.0.0 this past weekend on my S8. Battery life has gone to absolute shit. Anyone else have this happen?

Yep... Same thing.  I tried everything. Finally out of desperation I let it discharge all the way until it shut down then charged it while it was off back to 100%.

Isn't as good as it was before Oreo but way better than the shit show it was before.

What does 8.0 bring to the table other than "Got to get the 9" battery issue? Still on 7 and no available updates via big red.

I've had the 8 since it came out and obviously the battery is weakening but it's manageable. On light use (weekends) I won't charge it Saturday night typically.

Stay on 7. 8 isn't worth it.

I have the 9+ and I was coming from the S7 Edge.  There is no comparison between the phones, the 9 is so much quicker and smoother.  I have no issues with battery life (not a power user) and the camera is so much better.  I also bought a cheap wireless charger on Amazon so it just sits on it while at work, even though it's not really needed.  I'm on ATT if that matters to anyone.

You can get a Pixel or XL cheap as shit right now.  Best phone I've ever had.

Looks like this is not supported for TMobile. Could be wrong. I see the Pixel 2 will be supported by TMobile, though.

They work on T Mobile, just have to get the one from google and not Verizon. Been using them on at&t with no issues.

Ugh. I have changed nothing with my phone or usage since before the update. Alarm goes off at 7:30 and off the charger. Mild browsing. Couple of texts. Some emails. Browsing when I'm on the dumpa and a few other times. Just put it back on the charger at 24%. Normally I put it back on the charger at 12/12:30 when I go to bed and I'm around 50%.

Just upgrade. Why is the address bar at the bottom in chrome? This is stupid.  Every search about how to move it back to the top yields results in how to move it to the bottom.  This is stupid.

My address bar didn't move.

I did read something similar to above - let the battery drain to 0% and then charge to 100%. In the process of trying that.

Battery Consumption Problems

After updating your phone, the battery needs to be calibrated once again. To do so, you need to charge your phone to 100% first of all. After charging it to 100%, you need to let it drain to 0%. Do not charge your phone in between. Make sure that it comes to 0 from 100 without charging it in-between.

Repeat the same cycles for 3 or 4 times to fully calibrate the battery of your phone on the new firmware. This should fix the battery consumption issues on your phone.

If you think that there’s another issue with the battery, you can try clearing cache or booting into the Safe Mode to check if an application is eating the battery of your phone.

I just started getting lazy about texting.

I hate typing on my phone.  So, I had been using Mighty Text.

I just read an article, Google Android is finally going to naively allow you to send and receive texts from your PC.

Same article, I didn't realize there was an app called Samsung SideSync, that allows you to do anything on your phone on a PC.  I just got it working.  It seems pretty great.

Boon, try wiping cache from the recovery menu.

Edit.  Power off, hold bixby and volume up buttons, then power on.  Eventually the "dos-looking" text menu comes up, use volume down to scroll down to "wipe cache" (not wipe fone), hit it, confirm, reboot.  I'm told that cache functions differently than it did many versions ago.  Nevertheless, short of a factory reset, wiping that cache solves all sorts of problems.

On older phones, you want to stay off 8.x.  I had an HTC that was rock solid and 8 ruined it.  Have a Pixel2 now and 8.x is fine.  More power needed for Oreo I suspect.

Thanks, I tried this. Hard to tell so far.

The crazy thing is back when I had my original posts, I tried the let battery die, recharge up to 100% thing. In fact I did it right before my Austin trip over Easter weekend because I was paranoid about traveling with a phone that drained faster than my stamina after humping my wife for 30 seconds. The battery performed remarkably well for about a week and a half. All of a sudden, starting a few days ago, it's back to dog shit. I did not change a thing. I have no idea what happened. Hopefully the cache clear gets me back into normal usage territory.

It may not fix you up.  I think the consensus is, though, that the ideal way to do a system update is to do a factory refresh first.  I have never wanted to do that, but I have been doing cache wipes before (sometimes after) doing a system update and have had very few problems (going back to "Froyo," version 2.2).  I have also been able to solve other weird problems by cache wipe.

On my Google Now or app or whatever, the weather card has always been at the top.  A couple of months ago, the weather card was acting strange, so I turned it off, deleted data, etc.  When I turned it back on, it was at the bottom of the first page. Anyone know how to get it back to the top? L

Glad it helped.  As mentioned, that can solve all kinds of android weirdness and is probably a good idea to do before an update.

Any recommendations for email apps?

I've been using MailDroid for years, but it has developed an annoying bug which I'm tired of dealing with.  Samsung Galaxy S8 Active.

If you like it (I don't) you can add pop and imap accounts to gmail app now and save yourself some space/an app.

A lot of people seem to like K9. It's open source and highly configurable rather than being easy, though.  I used a variant of it for a while and liked it fairly well.

I used to use Maildroid. I gave up and use the stock email app now for my gmail because I hate the way the Gmail app handles conversations, even when conversation view is off. It seems fine.

I have pixel 2 xl and love it EXCEPT in the 8.1 update the proximity sensor is fucked.  About half the time if I'm making a call (doesn't happen using bluetooth) and I pull phone from ear to access anything on the phone the screen remains dark.  Last I saw google should have a fix in a matter of months.

I just bought a new Honor View 10 on Amazon for $499. It's made by Huawei who is really trying to get their foot in the US market and hasn't received anything but good reviews. It has pretty good specs. 6GB RAM + 128GB memory + SD slot. Kirin 970 chipset, dual sim, 5.99-inch 1080x2160 screen, Android 8.1 (Oreo) with EMUI 8.0. There's a dual-camera setup on the back, with a 16mp color sensor twinned with a 20mp monochrome sensor. 13mp camera on the front. If I read it right, it can take 3D pics.

Quite an upgrade from my Gen 1 Moto X but it was needed. It just didn't have enough memory and was starting to randomly freeze or shut down. Hope this new one lasts as long and won't lock up watching DirecTV.

I have an S8+.  Really liked it when I got it, but yes the battery is starting to drain faster.  I have had it for a year.  I think I might have to make a switch to the iPhone after I am done with this one.  Everyone else in the house has iPhones, I am the last hold out.

Did you have a system upgrade along the way?  If so, might try the cache wipe above.  The Oreo update on my S8 does seem to have lowered the predicted battery life (from closer to 20 to closer to 18 hours, if you put any stock in that), but from a practical standpoint, i.e. how much drain from morning to noon, all-day usage, etc.  I haven't noticed any real deterioration.  Mine is about a year old too.

Using Samsung Galaxy 5.0..

 Ancient, yes.

Any benefit to unlocking & ditching bloatware?  I cannot download an app for my credit union because the phone is apparently clogged.  No SW upgrade available either due to space situation.

Have been to Best Buy to see the Samsung specialist & of course due to compamy policy, he cannot say one way or the other if that is a good move.

I was going to upload screenshots of my phone specs, but since I cannot log in via Tapa, that means no upload from my phone (currently posting via Chrome phone interface & I get no pic upload options here).

I noticed this just now.  Working from home today, and my phone is tied to my home wifi.  In my call log, about half of my calls have that wifi icon beside them:

Does this mean my calls are going through wifi, and not the regular tower?

Before trying to root, there are some other things you should try.

First, get an SD card, 16GB would do, but they're cheap.  Move all photos, videos, audio to SD card.

Wait, really first, get a cache cleaner and clean your caches.  Or, manually, go through apps and delete cache data.

Second, go to "apps" and "disable" whatever bloatware you don't use and any other apps you don't use. Disabling doesn't remove the app, but it will uninstall potentially bloaty updates and keep it from updating further and you won't see it anymore.  I would recommend disabling or uninstalling Chrome, it's a fucking pig and offers no advantages over the stock browser.

Third, or part of second, under apps, move the "storage" from "device" to SD card (this will make a few of your apps wonky, so you can undo it for them, and some you won't have the option.

See what that gets you.

Rooting will get you a couple GB back from a stock condition for lack of bloatware.  But the phone has 16GB built in.  If you are that full, you have bigger problems.  That said, rooting effects a "factory reset" so you would definitely get all your space back.

If you have a cell signal booster, then yes it is going thru your home internet. Funny thing they still charge you airtime, at least AT&T did me until I unplugged the booster.
