Blind Smart Phone Camera Test - people don't know shit about photography

MKBHD is a respected electronics reviewer/vlogger, especially with smart phones.Ā  He did a blind smart phone camera test on 16 phones including the obvious new Iphones and Pixels and some cheap ass phones.Ā  He posted the pics and had millions of votes on Twitter and Instagram.Ā  The results are pretty damn funny andĀ predictable when you hear the reason why people chose what they chose.Ā  It's a long video, worth it if you have time to view it.

Ā

Ā

TLDR:Ā Ā

iphones X & XS and pixels get their asses beat in the very first round by cheap ass phones.Ā  people don't care about detail, depth, color accuracy, and shit photo geeks care about.Ā  they mostly only care about brightness:Ā the brighter the pic, the better.Ā  that's why the mate 20 pro won.

I find vertical video a lot more annoying than poor picture quality. I have no respect for people who hold their phones in a vertical position while shooting content.

there is no such thing as correct exposure.Ā  some of these sample photos you can barely see dude's face.Ā  if it's between a photo where you can see dude's face and one that you can't, well, the one that can't missed it.Ā  yeah, it may be more technically proficient, but it still missed.

a guy in the video even said it was hard for the cameras to properly expose a brother at ~15:15.Ā

i'd be interested to see the results with a white guy and an asian guy as the model.

Am I not understanding, or isn't he pretty much saying that the compression used by twitter/instagram pretty much destroys the detail that theĀ better cameras areĀ capable of deliveringĀ therefore making the entire experiment completely useless?

yes.Ā  but he's also making a point that most of the phone camera pics are used to upload to facebook, instagram, snapchat and twitter.Ā  so detail doesn't matter all that much when that's where the pics end up being posted anyway.

Agree.Ā  Just like your 4k TV doesn't mean much next to some 10 year old TV when it's tuned to a channel broadcasted in 720.
