You guys are letting an entertainer get under your skin. At the end of the day, none of this shit means anything. What Kirk Herbstreit says or does has no effect on your life unless he shows up at your house and fucks your wife on the Christmas dinner table.

As long as he doesn’t knock over the gravy boat or smush the deviled eggs.

Nope. Who the fuck cares what a talking head says?

A significant portion of this board cares for some reason. A lot of them are the same posters that have to immediately come here and lose their shit anytime they see someone in a crowd shot doing the horns down. That’s one I will never figure out.

Meh. Just countering his idiotic statements and attempts at driving public opinion. It’s ok to have the conversation, no?  He can still go fuck himself, With or without your blessing.

Mrs. Brat always gets indignant about the horns down on tv, but she’s a Southwest Texas grad….so go figure.

The "solution" to Horns Down is simple: embrace it.

Horns Up, Horns Down. It don't make a shit.

You show the Horns, at all, we know we're in your head. Rent Free. Rent Free, baby.

Wunna the games, not positive which, but I think SMU getting crushed by the Pedos, there was a crowd shot of the home teamers celebrating something, probably one of their pick-6es, and a number of them were Horns Downing. I was amused. At least there was no rhythmic slapping...

The thing about Herbstreit is- his voice is no longer the pre-eminent one in college football. Joel Klatt knows the teams and games better than Herbstreit. Greg McElroy has passed him, too. Herbstreit is just the guy that has been around the longest. Congrats- he’s this era’s Chris Schenkel

Hush your whore mouth, Schenkel is a Legend... LEGEND!

Kirk Herbstreit is getting a huge amount of flak for his coverage of the first-round playoff games - specifically for suggesting Indiana and SMU were not good CFP selections due to their one-sided first-round losses, while ignoring Tennessee's one-sided first-round loss.

Ben Axelrod: ESPN’s College Football Playoff coverage makes for a miserable, negative experience

I hate this shit. Auerbach works for NBC. They carry Big Ten games. To claim you don’t have an agenda like ESPN, and then dive into a full throated defense of Indiana is quite a move.

Pawl defending Tennessee is just as transparent and despicable.

That said, these people get paid to talk and stir the pot. The saner talking heads are regulated to podcasts because they don’t look a certain way and don’t say wild shit for clicks.

Kirk/ESPN want to produce a TV show instead of a true playoff. As long as you keep that in mind, their comments will always be grounded in their own unique logic.

All these commentators are going to defend their constituencies. Klatt shills for the Big 10 and Colorado. If he were at ESPN, he'd flip to the SEC!SEC!SEC! He's a lot more fair than most but he also has his bias. I don't hate Herbstreet like most on here but the shitting on Indiana just makes no sense after having Gameday go there and go full throated on Cignetti and what he had built. There are bound to be shitty opening games. That happens in the NFL too during Wildcard Weekend. There was no SEC team that got screwed over. They all had issues, none of them were that worthy. It's not as if they lost to other really good SEC teams. They each lost to a shit one, except South Carolina and they got pantsed OU style by Alabama. Once Tennessee went down in flames, that ended all SEC teams should've been in arguments. Maybe all the conferences just aren't that great this year because NIL has completely leveled the playing field and the teams that have been built over years are the ones rising up over the upstarts.

Klatt talked-up Texas pretty hard the last few years. Pretty sure he was on the bandwagon before it was obvious Texas was good again. Colorado is the only team he obviously shills for IMO.

He hypes the Big Ten because that’s his job.

I listened to his podcast/show a fair bit this season, undoubtedly partly because he’s never called UT a “cesspool” or been obviously anti-Texas like Kurt. Klatt’s B1G takes seemed generally fair and well reasoned. Maybe he was more of a hype man during games?

I like Herbstreit. He loves college football and seems to back that up with how much he knows. I don't hold grudges against things people say one time so long as their being honest. You can be honest and wrong.

I don't get the hate. Klatt is great right now. I suspect he'll say enough things he means over the years to come to make different fan bases hate him...and never forget. Klatt will be the same person. So it is with Herbstreit.

I get so bored with the idiots who overpopulate sports commentary. Herbstreit is far better than that as is Klatt.

I'll admit that I don't follow this as closely as many of you do. He called us a cesspool. That was low and wrong. However, we sucked at the time. He doesn't hold an opinion when the facts change. Maybe we should try the same thing.

The Cover 3 guys compared Herbstreit to Jon Smoltz. Biggest voice in his sport, but he also hates his sport. I think that’s fair. Instead of celebrating more CFP games he spent the broadcasts bitching about the weather, teams that got left out of the CFP, and fringe lunatic fOSU fans.

Honestly, I think he’s overworked. TNF + 4 hours of Game Day on Friday + calling the Notre Dame game + 3 hours of Game Day on Saturday + calling the Ohio State game is a really long week. He already quiet quit on the weekly CFP Rankings show, but he needs to step back more. I think he’s too proud of his craft to half ass the prep work.

The cesspool comment I think came from a place of ignorance. McCombs was absolutely correct on Charlie Strong, but unfortunately it became a race thing and Herbie saw it as rich old white guys trying to derail an African American coach.

I like Klatt. He’s in the phase where he’s still a person and not a “personality”.  KH has been a “personality” for a while now.

I thought he made his “cesspool” comment after Strong had been at Texas a while (googling shows it as 2016, a college gameday in October when the Ags were hosting Tennessee. Strong’s record, at that point, was 13-16). I imagine he had been around a lot of Ags, feeding him their worldview on things. So, yes, it came from ignorance. Too bad that he didn’t stop to apply any critical reasoning- “Wait, is this one large fanbase associated with UT, based in Austin, uniquely screwed up in comparison to not only this group here in College Station, but also the nation? Maybe I should look into it before spouting off before this eager crowd, and the nation at large? Naw, let’s give these people what they want to hear!”

It was a bad move, and he doesn’t make a habit of them, but he did make it and never took it back. It’s fairer to let that color our judgment of him than how he treated Texas.

Brad Crawford: Kirk Herbstreit gives public apology after College Football Playoff remarks

Quote

ESPN College GameDay analyst Kirk Herbstreit delivered several staunch opinions in the aftermath of the College Football Playoff's first round, including criticisms of Ohio State fans, teams he suggests were undeserving of bids like Indiana and the legitimacy of the selection committee's voting process. He issued a public apology this week for one of those takes that took place following Notre Dame's win over Indiana in the opening round's first game.

"I apologize to you and the Indiana fans," Herbstreit said earlier this week on The Pat McAfee Show. "I had just finished calling that game and I thought about the Friday night game when I was standing on the field and I looked at Indiana and I really wondered, 'Is this one of the best 12 teams?' as I'm watching them play."

Indiana's loss to Notre Dame in the first round sparked instantaneous debate on the validity of the selection committee's decision to include the Hoosiers over SEC teams like Alabama and South Carolina following the lopsided result. Indiana trailed by multiple possessions throughout the contest and the 27-17 final score was closer than much of the contest indicated, leading to questions.

Was this Hoosiers team, at 11-1 overall entering the playoff without a single victory over a nationally-ranked opponent, worthy of the 10-seed over a couple three-loss SEC squads? Indiana earned a playoff berth after recording the best regular season in program history strengthened by a soft schedule by Big Ten standards. In the final seconds of the broadcast, Herbstreit lashed out at the inclusion of Indiana.

"I hope next year the committee won't get caught up and what the social media and a lot of people who are fringe fans get caught up in, which is wins. 'They had 11 wins. They must be good.' Who did they beat I think is much more important than how many wins you have," Herbstreit said to Chris Fowler. "That's old school way of approaching it. Indiana having 11 wins and beating nobody. That doesn't mean they're one of the 12 best teams. There is a big difference between deserving and best. What this is all about is giving us the best 12 teams.

"Now, subjective how you want to figure out the best 12 is up to you. But that's what I want to see. I don't want to hear about wins, how many wins. Winning is obviously Important, but just because you have 11 wins doesn't mean you're better than a team that maybe had a tougher road that had nine wins. So, I think we get too caught up in how many wins you have."

Meanwhile, three-loss Alabama, South Carolina and Ole Miss finished just outside of the playoff's final top 12 after Clemson upended SMU in the ACC Championship Game to secure a bid-stealing situation. SMU, Clemson and Indiana were the "last teams in" on Selection Sunday.

Herbie is just projecting. He’s pissed he couldn’t nepo baby his kids into the Ohio State football program and his head is exploding that his son is going to Michigan. So he’s projecting by saying teams got into the CFP who didn’t deserve it while other more deserving teams were left out.

Meh. Indiana should have been there. Teams who go out there and perform and win should be given the opportunity to compete. The sport is supposed to be a meritocracy. Not a battle of logos and fanbases.

Still records should be adjusted down for playing FCS teams.

I wondered about that. How did his kid not sign at Ohio State? Even if he sucks the added ESPN connection wouldn’t hurt in the current NIL landscape.

His son probably think Ohio State fans are a bunch of moonshine-swilling shit heels. Since they are.
