This right here.

I don’t think what he said was low and, as we found out, he was right.

IIRC he was critical of us about to cut bait with Charlie Strong, which he had plenty to say about. Meantime Saint Urban was knuckles deep in some waitress's ass on video and he didn't have much to say about that

Pretty sure he made that comment on Gameday in Austin where he is paid to talk about the teams that will be playing.

If I recall no one in the media ever brought up Urban’s foray unless it was on a non-sports channel.

I'm not sure I agree with you 100% on your police work there, Steamboat

That is NOT what he was saying when he called Texas a cesspool.

He followed that up with why would anyone want to Coach at Texas right now.

Was he wrong?

Herbie was implying that we (the program, the boosters, etc) were wrong to be actively talking about firing Strong in 2016 (the fuck we were).  He felt like it was meddling.  Nevermind at that point we had already eaten two seasons of a shit sandwich (or was it a shit cake) and were in the midst of chewing and swallowing our third.  He did all this while in College Station and while he denied it he was clearly playing up to aggy.

He was wrong because he insinuated Texas was unjustly firing Charlie Strong because our Athletic Department was a cesspool, the truth is that Charlie Strong needed to be fired because he was not a good football coach. If I remember right he hinted at race as a factor also, but I might have just personally thought that’s what he meant.

He was calling us a cesspool because Charlie Strong was in hot water and he felt we were being impatient. He stopped only short of implying that it was a race thing. But the unspoken suggestion was there.

He was absolutely wrong. Charlie Strong fucking sucked on an epic scale and had no business being in charge of a program like UT.

Firing Strong was the right decision.

Hiring Herman was a bad decision, but it was not the same decision-makers involved. Nor does that bad decision invalidate the good decision that preceeded it.

I'm just glad we finally got it right the next time around.

And there you go

Herman sucking is irrelevant in analyzing the decision to fire Strong.

Any particular reason y'all aren't instead presenting Strong's head coaching record after leaving Texas which would actually be relevant to the wisdom of that decision?

He was race baiting, implying Strong was getting canned early because guys like McCombs did not like the color of the coach. None of which was lobbed at aTm when they got rid swag copter.

this.  Herbstreit is a cockmunch.  if we hire Herman after Mack we basically Late Era Mack continued.  8,9 win seasons.  not the complete colossal fuck up that those dumbasses Powers and Patterson were hiring the worst coach in the history of the University. Hiring Charlie Strong absolutely dumb beyond belief because they actually thought about it.  Hiring Herman was short sighted and over reactionary but the guy wasn't completely devoid of actual coaching acumen.  It was right to fire him, though.

I’m curious as to which other legitimate candidates were out there after we shitcanned Strong? Yeah, Herman turned out to be a bad hire. But at the time he had a good reputation as the next up-and-comer, LSU was in pursuit, and I don’t recall it feeling like we settled on him over better candidates that would’ve declined an offer.

I'm saying the search really wasn't a complete search. Herman was our guy from the jump. the success at tOSU and Houston was real but my guess is we didn't really understand Herman's "issues".  maybe "over reactionary" isn't the right word.

Yes. I mean, Washington fired Tyrone Willingham and hired Steve Sarkisian. Total cesspool move. Who could survive a hire like that?

seriously, the only reason Herman was even on our radar was because UH had the foresight to give a volleyball scholarship to Ed Olivers sister. Because of that , Ed went to UH and because of that UH started winning lots of games.....sort of like the ....but for a nail the shoe was lost, but for the shoe the horse was lost, but for the horse the rider was lost, but for the rider the battle was lost......ad nauseum..

One goddam womens volleyball scholarship caused us to wind up with Herman....

The thing about Herbstreit is- his voice is no longer the pre-eminent one in college football. Joel Klatt knows the teams and games better than Herbstreit. Greg McElroy has passed him, too. Herbstreit is just the guy that has been around the longest. Congrats- he’s this era’s Chris Schenkel.

I’m surprised joel knows what year it is after the hits during the BIG 12 Championship in late 2004.  Nice recovery though, his football acumen is really good.

the funny thing is that Columbus might be the most racist city in the US but of course Herbie wouldn't dare imply that.  and that tOSU was a cesspool of cheating on the order of OU's.

While it’s certainly true, Herbie has Saban parroting his “lunatic fringe” fOSU fans remarks.

I find the whole thing pretty funny. fOSU fans melting down after losing to Michigan and then no showing their CFP home game, and Herbie and Saban scolding them/telling them how they should feel about their own team.

Former fOSU players and now media members haven’t helped their cause. I heard a mashup of them basically saying they’d rather go 1-11 every year than lose to Michigan.

Tim Brando from the top rope.

For those colleagues of ours that argued for @AlabamaFTBL after their nauseating loss @OU_Football in November in primetime on ABC? I submit for your approval today’s appearance in Tampa against @UMichFootball. Oh I know, “they didn’t care, their fans didn’t either” the excuse machine in T-Town is never ending! However, the greatest line perhaps came from @KirkHerbstreit “I don’t wanna hear about wins!” Ok then, how about performance? Does that matter? If that doesn’t? What does🤦‍♂️🤷‍♂️

And, it's Tim Brando, so that tracks.

Brad Axelrod: Kirk Herbstreit bemoans ‘false narratives’ over his CFP commentary, gets Community Note’d

Quote

Kirk Herbstreit loves two things: Making it very clear who he thinks deserves to be in the College Football Playoff and chastizing college football fans who call him out on it. Whatever you think of Herbstreit, he always makes it very clear where he stands when it comes to who belongs in the CFP and who doesn’t. When the undefeated UCF Knights were angling for the playoffs in 2018, Herbstreit was adamant they didn’t deserve a spot, saying “If you don’t play anybody, you don’t deserve to be in.”

He was one of the leading voices championing Alabama getting into the CFP last year over undefeated Florida State, saying “Bama should have and did get the edge over Florida State.”

When 11-1 Indiana lost to Notre Dame in the first round of the 2024 CFP, Herbstreit was very clear in saying that the Hoosiers didn’t deserve to be there and that there were more deserving teams for that spot. “Indiana was outclassed in that game,” said Herbstreit afterward. “It was not a team that should’ve been on that field when you consider other teams that could’ve been there.”

A day later, he and Nick Saban retroactively lobbied for the Miami Hurricanes to have been in the playoff, presumably over Indiana, noting that America would have loved to have watched Cam Ward. As it turned out, Miami lost the Pop-Tarts Bowl while Ward sat out the second half. And on Tuesday, Alabama, presumably one of the schools top of mind for Herbstreit and others at ESPN when they thought about who should be in the CFP over Indiana, came up short against five-loss Michigan.

As you might imagine, some fans were quick to look in Herbstreit’s direction given his previous commentary. Turns out that the ESPN CFB analyst had some time. He logged onto X, the everything app, to congratulate the Wolverines on their win.

When one account responded to the post saying “You wanted Alabama in the playoff” along with a GIF of a person laughing, Herbstreit quoted it with “Keep believing the false narratives clown.”

It’s a bit unclear what the “false narrative” Herbstreit is pushing against would be. He didn’t specifically say Alabama should have been in the CFP over Indiana, but he did say that Indiana shouldn’t have made the cut, which means he did think other schools deserved it more. That’s pretty cut and dry. This is Herbstreit’s most common tactic when it comes to fallout from these situations.

Along with making bold proclamations about who deserves what, he tends to layer the sarcasm on thick when he doesn’t like the criticism he receives. He infamously chided college football fans for their skepticism over whether or not Cincinnati would make the CFP in 2021, all the while completely obvious to the role he and others at ESPN played in fostering a sense that G5 schools had no shot even if they went undefeated.

Herbstreit effectively went to war with Florida State fans last year over the ways he pushed for and backed up the notion they didn’t deserve to be in the CFP despite going undefeated. That fight continued into this season and turned ugly even as he and others at ESPN absolved themselves. One of the things that worked against Herbstreit in the FSU battle was an old tweet from 2014 where he said so long as you keep winning and finish in the top 4, nothing else matters. Not true, it seems.

That’s often what undoes Herbstreit and his defenses. Whenever he claims that he doesn’t have an agenda or is the victim of a “false narrative,” you can almost always find the evidence to back up his critics. That’s how his initial X post ended up getting a “Community Note,” a system by which users of X can offer context that refutes a statement made by the original poster.

At this point, Kirk is left with referring to critics as “lunatics” and refusing to admit he’s wrong. He’s been through this cycle enough times now that he’s gotten very good at it.

Ian Miller: Pro-SEC Kirk Herbstreit And ESPN Still Don't Get It

Quote

This week of bowl games could not have gone more poorly for the SEC, ESPN, and Kirk Herbstreit.

After Indiana lost 27-17 to Notre Dame in the first round of the College Football Playoff, Herbstreit and several of his ESPN colleagues spent their time railing against the Hoosiers' inclusion in the 12-team field. Even outright saying that Indiana didn't belong on the same field with the Fighting Irish. Yes, Indiana had gone 11-1, they said, but the wins shouldn't matter because other schools, with just nine wins, had supposedly played a harder schedule.

In an interview on SportsCenter with Linda Cohn, Herbstreit said that Indiana had 11 wins while "beating nobody," and that didn't make them better than "a team that maybe had a tougher road that had nine wins."

The obvious implication from Herbstreit's remarks was that nine-win SEC teams like Alabama, South Carolina and Ole Miss should have been included over Indiana. Unsurprising as it is that a broadcast partner of the SEC went to bat for the SEC, it wasn't justifiable criticism. And it got a whole lot more embarrassing within a matter of days.

Tennessee, which finished 10-2 in the SEC, got obliterated by Ohio State. Herbstreit had nothing to say about the Volunteers' inclusion as an at-large team that was run off the field. Then Texas A&M, which was one win away from the SEC title game, lost to a mediocre, 6-6 USC team in the Las Vegas Bowl. Despite the Trojans missing around a dozen key players on offense and defense.

On New Year's Eve, Alabama scored just 13 points in a 19-13 loss to 7-5 Michigan. Even though, like SC, Michigan was missing a number of its most important players on defense. Then South Carolina lost to Illinois as a big favorite, sending the SEC to 1-4 against the Big Ten. And after all that happened, Herbstreit still didn't admit what he'd done.

SEC Bias On ESPN Is Out Of Control

First, Herbstreit congratulated Michigan on the win over Alabama. Then when fans accurately pointed out that he'd advocated for Alabama or other three-loss SEC teams to get into the playoff, he accused them of peddling a "bulls*** narrative."

Another user then responded with a laughing GIF and "You wanted Alabama in the playoff," to which Herbstreit responded: "Keep believing the false narratives clown."

But Herbstreit's own words are contradictory. If his comments about nine-win teams being better than Indiana didn't refer to Alabama, South Carolina and Ole Miss, who did they refer to? Herbstreit's playing dumb now, but everyone knew what he meant. Except Alabama and South Carolina proved that he and the others in the ESPN-SEC promotional department had no idea what they were talking about.

For example, Peter Burns' post from December 21st aged like fine milk, comparing SEC team schedules to a "US Open golf course."

Michigan beat Alabama, and Indiana beat Michigan. Does that mean Michigan is a "nobody," per Herbstreit? Will Burns admit that the SEC's disastrous performances show that the hypothetical situations their fans rely on were nonsense? And that their self-aggrandizing schedule comments weren't factually accurate? Of course not. Because as is so often the case, broadcasters and media that watch only one conference tend to overrate that conference.

Like how media figures who live on the East Coast and go to bed at 10pm haven't always paid attention to West Coast baseball teams that start their home games at 10pm. Or did he say that undefeated Oregon didn't belong because they got blown out by Ohio State in the Rose Bowl? Of course not. Oregon belonged, Indiana belonged. Tennessee belonged. They played poorly and lost to other elite teams. It happens. Just accept it and stop acting like the PR wing of your broadcast partners.
