What a bizarre scene

Hugh Freese apparently does not surround himself with grownups.  Because if there were any actual grownups involved in this situation, they would have said, "Hey Hugh, while your determination is admirable, this is massively stupid and a horrible waste of resources."

I can't decide whether he's trying to make himself into a martyr, or whether he thinks his job is that fucking important.    Either way, he's wrong, and it's a really bad look.

Sounds like he's likely back in a makeshift press box hospital room again this week, and Liberty is having him travel in an ambulance from Lynchburg to Lafayette so that altitude doesn't inflame his back.

I'm seriously thinking hes going after full Martyr status with all this BS

I just watched a segment on Ole Miss and Hugh Freeze on YouTube, so this hits close to home. Apparently some kid named Leo Lewis (never heard of him) is one of them that made the call about improprieties.

This is true. He went to State (who it came out paid him $10k for that "privilege") and then torched the Ole Miss program.

The Monday After: Why Hugh Freeze will return to the Power Five -- and most likely the SEC -- in 2021

By Tom Fornelli.       Nov 9, 2020

Saturday might have been the best college football Saturday we'll see all season. We had a classic, double-overtime battle between two legitimate College Football Playoff contenders that resulted in Clemson's first regular-season loss since 2017. We also saw what could have served as a playoff quarterfinal, with Florida eliminating Georgia from the race while taking control of the SEC East.

Yet, despite those games and fun results across the country -- and for the first time this season, I can write "across the country" and be accurate -- I couldn't help but find myself thinking about Jimmy Sexton at the end of it all. I thought about Sexton because he's Hugh Freeze's agent, and Hugh Freeze's Liberty team beat Virginia Tech 38-35 on Saturday. It was the second time the Flames have beaten an ACC team this season, and it bumped them up from No. 25 to No. 22 in the latest AP Top 25 poll. It also cemented the fact that, no matter what happens this offseason, Hugh Freeze is going to be back coaching at a Power Five program sooner than you might think.

Sure, his tenure at Ole Miss didn't end well. An NCAA investigation led to recruiting violations. Those violations led to a lawsuit, and that lawsuit led to the school finding out Freeze had "a concerning pattern" of calls to an escort service. But guess what? That was three years ago, and Freeze has won a lot of games since! Memories are short in this business, and they can get a lot shorter when there are plenty of wins to think about in the here and now.

So somebody is going to hire Freeze soon, but who? Let's break down the Power Five gigs from least to most likely.

  • Michigan -- I don't think Michigan will fire Jim Harbaugh, not even after the loss to Indiana. Changes could be made to Harbaugh's staff, but my sense of the situation is he won't be going anywhere unless he leaves of his own accord. I can't rule it out entirely, though, because it's 2020 after all. Still, as strange as this year has been, I can't see any scenario that finishes with Freeze behind a podium in a maize and blue striped tie.
  • Duke -- Considering Freeze's success beating ACC teams this year, it isn't crazy to think he could wind up there. Still, looking at the ACC, I don't see any obvious candidates for jobs to come open. Duke could be a possibility, though, seeing as how the Blue Devils are 7-13 since the start of the 2019 season. Even if it did come open -- and I don't think it will -- it's not a great fit.
  • USC -- It wasn't even noon in Los Angeles on Saturday before you had to wonder if Clay Helton was on the way out. The Trojans came back to beat Arizona State, but it always feels like Helton is another loss or two away from being done. Still, even if this job comes open, I don't think Freeze would be high on the school's list.
  • Texas -- Yes, the Longhorns are 5-2, but it's Texas. The seat is hot and always will be. Hugh Freeze doesn't strike me as a Texas coach, but it's a program that is tired of not being good enough, and Freeze could be the biggest name on the market this winter.

OK, now let's get to the real Hugh Freeze Market: the SEC.

  • Vanderbilt -- The Commodores are 0-5, and Derek Mason is 1-12 in his last 13 SEC games. I'm not sure Freeze would be considered a fit to the people in charge in Nashville, but Freeze should consider Vandy as a fit. Sure, it's a difficult place to win, but it's also a private school. No FOIA requests, coach!
  • Tennessee -- The 2-0 start to 2020 feels like a long time ago. The Vols have lost four straight since, and while two of those losses were to Alabama and Georgia, the Kentucky and Arkansas defeats are a hard pill to swallow. Jeremy Pruitt's trying to rebuild the program from the ground up, but you have to wonder if patience is beginning to wear thin.
  • Auburn -- I think this is the scenario many fans would love to see because Hugh Freeze returning to the SEC West to compete directly with Ole Miss and Alabama would make for excellent content. Still, even if he's perennially on the hot seat, I don't know if Auburn's going to fire Gus Malzahn. The Tigers are 4-2 and have been playing much better since a loss to South Carolina. That said, games against both Alabama and Texas A&M remain.
  • South Carolina -- The Gamecocks are 2-4 on the year and were just roasted by Texas A&M 48-3. It's fair to wonder if the clock is ticking on Will Muschamp's time with the program. Freeze would be a Spurrier-esque hire for Carolina and would rejuvenate the program.

My Official Prediction -- As I said, Auburn is the most entertaining option, but I think South Carolina is the one that's most likely to happen. When you consider the likelihood of a change being made and the job's overall attractiveness, I think it would make a lot of sense on both sides.

Wildest Ending of the Week

Oh, I almost forgot to mention how Freeze and Liberty beat Virginia Tech on Saturday. The Flames had lined up for a game-winning, 51-yard field goal attempt in the final seconds, but Virginia Tech blocked it and returned it for a walk-off win in incredible fashion.

Except they didn't because Virginia Tech coach Justin Fuente called a timeout just before the snap that erased the play. Liberty would make the field goal when it counted.

'When Can We Move On?': The Past, Present and Future of Hugh Freeze

https://www.si.com/college/2020/11/05/hugh-freeze-past-present-future-liberty-ole-miss

Here's the end of the article...  The Future

In the winter of 2018, just before Liberty announced him as coach and 18 months removed from his time at Ole Miss, Hugh Freeze had plenty of options to return to the SEC as a coordinator.  Well removed from that time, Freeze now reveals that both Gus Malzahn at Auburn and Nick Saban at Alabama approached him about jobs. There were others, too, including Tennessee.  Freeze says he was “prepared to” accept any one of those jobs before deciding against it. But he preferred being a head coach and a visit to Liberty’s campus further solidified that belief.

Also, he believes the time away from the league is a necessity. Not for him but for his family.  “As you can imagine what walking back into some of those stadiums would be like…” he says before pausing. “I could have handled it. But the less my family has to (deal with)... This was just the best for my girls. It’s worked out.”

But there’s more to this story. Freeze’s ability to return to the SEC is a murky issue. Multiple sources within the conference who spoke to SI for this story have made it clear: It will be difficult for him to return, if he ever wants to. In fact, in a memo to league schools in 2018, SEC commissioner Greg Sankey informed programs what hiring Freeze might entail, including a deep vetting akin to an NCAA show-cause. Why is your program hiring him?

While Freeze’s Ole Miss tenure ended because of his personal issues, the SEC office is more concerned with the level of NCAA rule-breaking transpiring at a program that he captained. One former SEC administrator describes this as a “sensitive issue” with the conference office and the commissioner.  No sitting head coach at the FBS level has been in charge of a program that has sustained such serious sanctions. FIU coach Butch Davis is the closest example. He was coach at North Carolina during a similar investigation that found improper benefits and academic issues. But Davis was later cleared by the NCAA of all involvement.

NCAA sanctions or not, it might not matter.

“He beat Nick Saban twice,” says one industry insider. “Some SEC school is going to offer him a job.”  That goes for the rest of the country, too. Freeze’s marketability as a head coach continues to climb with each victory. Three industry experts who spoke to SI under condition of anonymity believe that he’ll return somewhat soon to the big leagues of NCAA football. But, asks one, who’s willing to take the baggage?  “I think he’s on lists, but he’s in a category of ‘Can I really do this?’” says the source.

Some believe Freeze is more likely to be hired by a desperate Power 5 program with an older athletic director who’s on his way out. No young AD wants the hire, if it backfires, to impact the rest of his or her career, says one agent. “He wasn’t relevant before this year,” says another sports agent, “but he’s propelling himself into relevancy.”  The move may not happen this year, though. Those in the industry expect low turnover because of COVID-related financial issues. Buyout money isn’t there. Optics are bad. However, all eyes are on Texas, says one sports agent.

Do the Longhorns make a move with Tom Herman? What about Michigan’s Jim Harbaugh jumping to the NFL?

Either could create a domino effect that’d open the door for Freeze. And though his alma mater (Southern Miss) has an opening, the Golden Eagles’ resources can’t compete with Liberty.  McCaw is ready when the time comes to attempt to keep his coach. “It’s in the back of your mind,” he says.

Freeze’s candidacy is strong enough that members of his own staff hear chatter from their friends.  “We’ve got buddies, too. They’ll say, ‘I saw Coach Freeze is up for this job!’” says Tanner Burns, Liberty’s special teams coordinator who played for Freeze at Ole Miss. “If you’re getting talked about for Power 5 jobs or this job opens… we see it. I’m not going to lie. If it is coach’s dream to get back at the Power 5 level, it’s God’s plan for him. He’s happy here for now. This place has treated us well, treated him well.”

When asked about the future, Freeze waves aside the topic. He rattles off the coaching cliches. He’s happy in Lynchburg. His family is well taken care of. He’s honored to be here.  “I’m transparent to a fault these days probably,” he says. “I’m sure that will bite me in the tail with the media. I don’t want to tell anyone anything that’s not true, but I really believe there are very few jobs that I could leave here for right now.”

Plus, in 2021, the Flames could be better than they are this season. And the ’21 schedule sets up nicely. Sure, Liberty has to play at Troy, at Syracuse and at UAB, but there are eight more very winnable games. The toughest game on that 2021 slate is a trip to a familiar conference and a familiar town.

In a game arranged a year before Freeze took the Liberty job, the Flames are scheduled on Nov. 6, 2021, to play at Ole Miss.  “Oh yeah,” Freeze chuckles, his voice dripping in sarcasm, “I’m really looking forward to that one.”

I expect more articles on how coach __________ is being courted by Texas to make the rounds of ensuring $9.95 being paid from coast to coast.  This is the very reason is why I laugh when people say Texas doesn't matter...yes we sucked but everyone still pays attention.

This guy might be good for some 2 win program that needs some structure but as a Big time college coach his record isn't all that impressive outside of his wins against Saban.

While at Ole Miss his record was

2012 7-6

2013 8-5

2014 9-4

2015 10-3

2016 5-7

39-25 (.609)

As a reminder, Herman's record at Texas so far

2017 7-6

2018 10-4

2019 8-5

2020 5-2

30-17 (.638)

Sounds like someone is just trying to get their name out there so they can coach at some place that matters.

Liberty Extends Hugh Freeze Through 2026 With Reported 'Lucrative' New Deal

MADELINE COLEMAN        1 HOUR AGO

Hugh Freeze has led Liberty's football team to the best start in program history during this bizarre season, and in turn, the university extended the head coach's contract through 2026, it announced Wednesday.

"We are proud of Coach Freeze and the football program," Liberty University President Jerry Prevo said in the school announcement. "This contract extension demonstrates my commitment and support of him and our program. Dr. Falwell's vision was for Liberty to compete at the highest level of college football and Coach Freeze is making great strides towards realizing the vision."

Liberty is a private institution and is not required to disclose financial details but sources told ESPN that the new deal would place Freeze as one of the five highest-paid non-Power 5 head coaches in college football.

"All aspects of our program are on the rise under Hugh's leadership, and we are putting the infrastructure in place to make this one of the top Group of Five programs in the country," Liberty athletic director Ian McCaw told ESPN on Wednesday.

In their second full season at the FBS level and the second season with Freeze at the helm, the Flames (7–0) are currently ranked No. 22 in the latest Associated Press poll. The team has won nine straight, dating back to last season.

Most recently, Liberty is coming off a last-second win at Virginia Tech, where the Flames secured the program's first-ever win over the Hokies, 38–35, on a 51-yard field goal by kicker Alex Barbir.

Liberty has now beaten two ACC teams, the other being Syracuse 38–21, and will face NC State on Nov. 21.

With winning 14 of the last 19 games, the former Ole Miss coach is likely one of the top offensive minds in the country, and had previously been mentioned in connection with the Southern Miss head-coaching vacancy.

Freeze, 51, had been out of coaching for two years before joining Liberty after resigning from Ole Miss before the 2017 season following a scandal. School officials found a pattern of improper calls on his university-issued cell. The NCAA imposed severe sanctions, including a two-year bowl ban for failure to monitor his staff.
