Liberty Extends Hugh Freeze Through 2026 With Reported 'Lucrative' New Deal

Liberty University extends contract of football coach Hugh Freeze through 2026

Hugh Freeze, who has steered Liberty's football team to the best start in program history this season, has agreed to a new deal through 2026, the school announced Wednesday.   Financial details were not announced, but sources told ESPN that the deal would place Freeze among the top 5 highest-paid non-Power 5 head coaches in college football -- which would mean his average salary would be $3 million-plus per year.

"All aspects of our program are on the rise under Hugh's leadership, and we are putting the infrastructure in place to make this one of the top Group of 5 programs in the country," Liberty athletic director Ian McCaw told ESPN on Wednesday.

This is Freeze's second season at Liberty, a private institution that has won nine straight games dating back to last season, most recently a 38-35 victory on the road against Virginia Tech on Saturday.

"That was without question the biggest win in the history of our school," said McCaw, who added that the two sides had been working on an extension for several weeks.

The Flames (7-0) are ranked No. 22 in the latest Associated Press poll in just their second full season at the FBS level after being a provisional program in 2018. They own two wins over ACC opponents after defeating Syracuse 38-21 on the road earlier in the year and face a third ACC foe on Nov. 21 when they travel to NC State.

Liberty closes out the regular season with a game at unbeaten and No. 15-ranked Coastal Carolina on Dec. 5.

Freeze, one of the top offensive minds in the college game, has also been mentioned in connection with the Southern Miss head-coaching vacancy. He talked to Alabama, Auburn and Tennessee about various coordinator/assistant roles two years ago before taking the Liberty job.

"I am thankful for the strong commitment and support from President [Jerry] Prevo and our leadership and look forward to continuing to build this program," Freeze said in a statement. "Our family along with the coaching staff, support personnel and players are grateful to have the opportunity to represent this University."

Liberty is tied for 19th nationally in scoring offense this season and averaging 39 points per game. Quarterback Malik Willis, in his first season after transferring from Auburn, is ranked 14th nationally in total offense. He's averaging 323.7 yards per game and has accounted for 19 touchdowns.

Freeze was also given a contract extension by Liberty last December. At the time, he expressed his gratitude to the Liberty fans, players and administration after crippling back problems kept him away from preseason practice. He coached the first few games from a hospital bed and then a dental examination chair in the press box.

In August of last year, Freeze underwent surgery after a potentially life-threatening strand of staph infection entered his bloodstream and complicated severe pain he was already experiencing from a herniated disk in his back.

Freeze, 51, was out of coaching for two years after resigning at Ole Miss before the 2017 season when school officials found what they called a pattern of improper calls on Freeze's university-issued cellphone. Freeze won nine games in 2014 and 10 games in 2015 at Ole Miss and beat Alabama both seasons. The Rebels won the Sugar Bowl to cap the 2015 season, but Ole Miss was hit with severe NCAA sanctions, including a two-year bowl ban, that occurred on Freeze's watch. Freeze was cited by the NCAA for failure to monitor his staff.

How the fuck did it cost $1.8M to get NMSU to Auburn? We only paid South Alabama $300K to come kick our asses and they're at least Sun Belt worthy.

Can you imagine how many hops it takes to get from Las Cruces to Auburn? That has to be murder on the airplane fuel.

I had no idea who Freeze was until I read his wiki file.  How insane does the Auburn leadership have to be to hire this wacko?
Auburn rivals aggy in some ways when it comes to desperate little bro syndrome. Of course most of the fanbase from the last time they had success are still alive, so at least they know what they're striving for.

Brian Kelly must be an asshole to work for...

Sources: Auburn executes major coup, nabs top executive Will Redmond from LSU

JOHN BRICE   9 HOURS AGO

Hugh Freeze is making big-boy moves heading into Year 2 at Auburn.  And Freeze's gain is yet another loss for Brian Kelly and LSU.

Multiple sources tell FootballScoop that Freeze and the Auburn Tigers are plucking away Will Redmond from LSU to become Auburn's brand-new general manager of football.  The reigning FootballScoop Director of Player Personnel of the Year, Redmond has in short order become one of the top personnel executives in all of college football..

He's the off-the-field architect of LSU's roster overhaul under Kelly and was the lead scout on Jayden Daniels when the Tigers recruited the former Arizona State quarterback out of the NCAA Transfer Portal.

Moreover, it was the work of Redmond -- and a top-notch staff he helped hire -- that accelerated LSU's rebound under Kelly.

The Bayou Bengals had fewer than 40 scholarship players when Kelly arrived in late 2021 after he had established the mark as Notre Dame's all-time winningest coach; work in the Portal and on the traditional recruiting trail helped LSU turn in consecutive 10-win seasons in Kelly's first two years and also saw the Tigers appear in the 2022 SEC Championship game.

Redmond's move to Auburn, however, could be viewed as quite literally generations in the making.

A Franklin, Tennessee, native, who climbed from sports information student-assistant at the University of Tennessee to deeply experienced personnel professional, Redmond's grandparents first met at Auburn -- even before the school was known as Auburn University.

Moreover, Redmond has a cousin who is a former NCAA Champion with a star denoting the stellar career on the Auburn campus.

In addition to Redmond's undergraduate work on Rocky Top, he also logged time at MTSU and Kansas before Austin Thomas plucked him away from the Jayhawks to help run LSU's personnel efforts.

LSU in the past two years signed 247Sports Composite top-7 classes, and as Redmond prepared for his exit from one of the SEC's three sets of Tigers to another one, LSU already garnered commitments from the top-ranked quarterback, running back and wideout, per some industry rankings, in the 2025 class.

Redmond and his wife, Jessica, have two children.

Now that Auburn has Durkin, their entire defensive staff is seemingly complete:

Charles Kelly and Durkin will be defensive coordinators. Jeremy Garrett will coach defensive line, Josh Aldridge will coach linebackers, Wesley McGriff will coach cornerbacks and Charles Kelly will likely coach safeties.

We’re approaching the point that he’s thrown so many QBs under the bus , that maybe no one wants to play for him?? His offense helped me tremendously put numbers up when I blew my shoulder out…. But why is it someone else’s fault every time there’s a loss ?? … but when there’s a win I watch the press conferences just to count how many times the word “I” is used… appreciate what he did for me , my son wouldn’t be playing for him tho.

I got a story I’ll keep in my back pocket forever until it’s time.

(Auburn staffers calling my phone incoming)

But that dude has never helped me a day in his life…. It was always only  about getting a win for him so he could collect his extra 100 racks a win.

If y’all knew the medications and shots I was taking to get that man his money you wouldn’t believe they would let you walk on a field like that.

And with all that ,  I still feel the tires from the bus.

(Bo’s drunk) nah he is as sober as could be watching tape , just tired of this dude always blaming players … EVERY.SINGLE TIME.

Do your research on his offenses , excluding his time at liberty , look at the interceptions every qb he’s had play for him throws , at some point when it happens over and over every year…. You look in the mirror , not at the players to save face.

Bo Wallace going scorched is entertaining. But listen to Freeze's post-game. It's really stunning how shittily he blamed his players. He didn't just hurl a qb under the bus. He smeared both quarterbacks. And then a few running backs. He's a total shithead and it'd be hard to find a program who deserves Hugh Freeze more than Auburn.

Filth merchant and ranting old man from Poltergeist 2, Ian McCaw, revitalized Freeze as he found commonality and fellowship with him in morally bankruptcy -- another cretin who knows how to ride the religion grift for their own benefit.

Auburn bought into the bullshit because Auburn. Fuck them. This will be enjoyable. Feed Bo Wallace handfuls of Vicodin and cheap whiskey and turn him loose. What a blast.

I’ve always thought Freeze was a good coach. I’m now wondering how far off base that view might really be when reviewing his work.

At Ole Miss, they were aggying the bag game before the aggies showed up and did it too. They were paying double what anyone else would and amassed serious talent. Then it all fell apart.

At Liberty, they basically play an FCS schedule. Anyone can win there with that bullshit.

Now at Auburn, you can’t outspend everyone all of the time and the schedule is tough. So what happens? They’re a mediocre program with a piece of shit for a HC that the lunatic fanbase is beginning to discover it doesn’t like very much.

As much as I would like to see Auburn beat OU and ATM, I can get behind just watching Hugh Freeze burn that thing down to the studs.

Has there ever been an Auburn hire where you think "they got their coach."? Every time they make a hire i think "he'll last 2 years". I don't know enough about them, but their boosters are nuts and then there's the Bama thing, in which they feel the need to compete.  It always seems so dysfunctional over there.

And Hugh Freeze has always been of questionable character going back to his HS coaching days. If Auburn has been playing football for 120 years, I would guess they have had 50 different head coaches.

For extra lulz, consider that Deuce Knight was visiting auburn for the Arkansas game. Front row seats to the turbulence and watching fat Auburn fans weep and belllow like land manatees. I imagine even Lebby Briles could find a way to capitalize on that. Kiffin should.

OU at home next week might be dicey for them. Win/win either way.

Other than that, Vandy and ULM seem to be their only penciled W's. And Vandy is clearly plucky. Kentucky might find a way to do Stoops stuff. An Auburn metal barrel fire of old scratch off tickets and Miracle Whip jars would be fun to watch.
