  • The 3rd known photograph of Robert Johnson JUST surfaced. It was in the collection of his 94 year old stepsister.   Kind of a big deal.

Was looking up the date of the last show I saw at the Armadillo, and found this on Reddit:  Which of you assholes stole my photo?

I'm sure somebody copied it from Traces of Texas after I posted it on my social media feeds.

One of my readers sent this to me. Before there was ZZ Top there was Moving Sidewalks. Traces of Texas reader Lee Ann Lavender graciously sent in this OUTSTANDING photo of Billy F Gibbons and his band in 1967. Billy is standing on the right, looking down at his guitar. The Moving Sidewalks were playing at a church dance somewhere on Westheimer in Houston. Lee Ann's mom, Carol Lavender, was Billy's girlfriend at the time and that's her dancing on the far right. This is so cool and so historic I can hardly stand it.

From Lee Ann Lavender The Moving Sidewalks, playing at a church dance somewhere on Westheimer in 1967. My mom is on the right and her boyfriend, Billy Gibbons, is singing and playing guitar just to her left cleaned up.jpg

My half-brother, Steve, was manager and occasional keyboardist for the Moving Sidewalks. I probably posted this well up-thread, but here's a picture of the two of them from 1966 (Billy on the right). He told me a story once of the MS opening for Hendrix in Austin and getting to meet Jimi backstage. I hit him with the dumbest question ever: "What was Jimi like?" His answer: "He was pretty cool."

Not at all. I have more pictures somewhere. I don't own the rights to the photos though (in case that matters). Also, Steve is listed as producer of their only album. So maybe that was more of his role. I'm not sure to what extent my half-brother Richard was involved. Regardless, they parted ways just prior to ZZTop. Steve owned Rampart studios in Houston for years after that and produced albums for The Judys and KingsX among other projects. Richard, opened the Catacombs club on S. Post Oak in Houston in the late 60s where the Jeff Beck Group, Mothers of Invention, Grateful Dead, and Jethro Tull played their first Houston gigs.

Here's one of the pictures I found. I think (but do not know for sure) that this was taken in the pool house at my dad's old house in Tanglewood.

Any chance you have a larger version of that second photo? I can enlarge it in photoshop, but it loses clarity and starts getting pixelated.

Here's what it looks like when I enlarge it in Photoshop to my usual size.

I'll have to look. Doubtful, but I'll see.

Also, I think that Hendrix show was in Ft. Worth, not Austin. This all was before I was born.

"Who's that sunofabitch next to Switzer?" is sort of how I feel about that photo. Cher is not in the same universe at the national treasure on the left.

U2 playing their first gig, a talent show at Dublin's Mount Temple Comprehensive School in 1976. They covered Peter Frampton's "Show Me The Way". Apparently Bono came out of the womb a fully-formed twatwaffle.

This is kinda like thescene in Saving Private Ryan where Corporal Upham had the chance to prevent something horrible but he didn't have the guts to do it. Every student at Mount Temple Comprehensive School quietly shares the burden of that guilt
