Holy hell...

https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/california-politician-arrested-spanking-daughter-something-232402437.html

A Democratic assemblyman in California was arrested Monday on suspicion of child cruelty after allegedly spanking his daughter. On Wednesday, he claimed that he had only done so as a means of punishment.

In an interview with the Fresno Bee, lawmaker Joaquin Arambula spoke about an incident at home Sunday night that led him to spank his 7-year-old. The following day, when she went to school, she allegedly told her teacher what had happened and expressed how she was upset about it, sparking an investigation by Child Protective Services (CPS).

“I disciplined her as a consequence to something she did. This is something that’s really rare for us. It’s a tool of last resort but it’s something that we do. And I spanked her bottom,” he explained. “She was pretty upset, and she struggled to be able to share her emotions, as I’m sure you can appreciate a 7-year-old will. But that’s all that happened.”

Still, Arambula was arrested on Monday night and accused of willful cruelty to a child. As of Wednesday, CPS and the Department of Social Services declared Arambula and his wife, Elizabeth, fit to bring their three children — aged 3, 6 and 7 — who had been staying with Arambula’s parents, back home.

“It was us disciplining — normal discipline to our child,” Arambula said. “And I’m in the midst of a process that is playing out as we speak.”

The Fresno Bee additionally reports, “Arambula thanked his daughter’s teacher, Fresno police and Child Protective Services for ‘doing their jobs’ and ‘following the process.’” Family psychologist Barbara Greenberg tells Yahoo Lifestyle that the incident was “handled beautifully.”

“Anything that hurts a child physically and emotionally, in my opinion, is abuse and should be reported,” Greenberg says. “Too often kids go to school looking for help and they’re not taken seriously. The school took this very seriously, as they should, and they did what they were supposed to do.”

As for the assemblyman’s actions, however, Greenberg says, “Nothing good comes from [spanking].”

“There are much, much better ways to teach your children, and losing control and putting your hands on a child, there’s nothing good that comes from it,” she says. “You don’t create kids with self-esteem and with the ability to handle frustration by spanking them.”

Arambula told the publication that he has no plans to resign. If convicted, the assemblyman could face up to six months in jail and possible probation.

I can tell you that one of the most terrifying things is when CPS knocks on your door, or sends you that letter that they are sending an investigator.

We received our letter after our oldest son went to a summer camp for a week. About a week after the camp, we get at letter that CPS has opened an investigation. Long story short, it took more than 2 months for the investigation. They came into the home and interviewed the family, then each of the children individually, and Mrs. Fairway & I individually.
Turns out son #1, when a camp counselor was telling him about things that had happened to him as a kid, said yeah that happened to me too. And the counselor reported it.
We never did learn exactly what the counselor had said, and I will tell you that I was not a perfect parent (which was pretty coincidental as he was far from a perfect son) but they dropped the case.
My son was probably around 9-10 at the time, he was a challenge to parent right up until he reported for boot camp.
Btt with a number of run-ins with the police and school officials, this one meeting with CPS was the most terrifying, as they can take your kids from the home and the process is very difficult.

I know people who have that belief; in general, they also IMO are pacifists and believe we should talk to our enemies and terrorists rather than send armed troops.
My kids have an aunt (on my wifes side, although there is one who likely would say the same thing) that told my son she was so sorry when he enlisted because is would change him when he killed innocent people and he would have PTSD for the rest of his life.
For what it's worth, he is a mechanic in the National Guard and the only thing he kills with any regularity while serving is Bud Light (and that actually makes me weep)

My parents would be under the jail!.

Hell, I was rude and intentionally disrespectful to an adult once at a park and my mother put me in the car and drove me to her nearest friend's home...... because it was closer than ours.

Rang the doorbell - asked if she could use their bathroom, and lit into me.

When she was done, she thanked the friend, loaded my sniveling (now respectful and remorseful) butt back in the car and reminded me that my father would be home later as well.

Shit, Andy Griffith would give Opie whippins' on the regular.

My dad had a leather-backed shoehorn/brush sort of like this with a leather strap sewn on the backside of the brush part.  I got my ass beat with that bitch more times than I can count.

I got my ass whupped on the reg. I was visiting my friend one day who was the product of two hippy parents. He got in trouble so they put him time out. I made fun of him so relentlessly that he would beg his folks to spank him instead.

Thread title got me excited. Now disappointed.
That being said, my mother had a wooden spanking paddle with holes in it. She wouldn’t hold back either.

My mom had this one hanging in the kitchen as a warning:

When I was a little snot nosed RPM we were grocery shopping down at the Spot Cash and I wanted candy or something and threw a backtalking fit in the checkout line. Mom lit my ass up right there in front of everybody. I got it a 2nd time when we got home and it was worse than the first. I never threw another fit.

One of the reasons I was always scared to have kids. Kid gets mad at you, makes a phone call saying you molestered them or beat them, and then your life is over.

Raise them with the healthy fear that you will kill them if they make that call...

A little bit of cray-cray, played at the right time can be extremely useful.

Well, that and the fact no one would have sex with you.

Honestly I was hardly ever grounded.  A quick whippin' and we both went about our business.  In retrospect it was probably better that way.

I've been there. I wasn't terrified at all. I thought it was a silly overreaction from those who reported us. Six months later, as expected, we got a letter saying there was nothing abusive happening. Which was completely understandable, because nothing abusive was happening.

If I or either of my brothers fucked up, Mom would say “Go get my knitting needle”. That was enough to turn us into a puddle of quivering, blubbering jello. That needle stung like a sumbitch when she wrist-flicked it a couple of times on the back of our legs.

We tried our best to avoid those occasions.

My mom was a crazy psychotic.  Every day was one long screaming fit.  She used the the flyswatter, and her mule slippers.  Hit any place that wasn't covered up.  I did learn to avoid trouble as much as possible.

My dad was much more reluctant, but it was always the belt.  The kid across the street's mom would break off a switch from a tree.

Then there were the teachers and coaches.  All in all, prolly too much of this, but the OP story is pathetic.

Never heard of that one.  damn.

My mom used whatever was closest...  wooden spoons, flyswatter, HotWheels tracks-" criss-cross, bust your ass," belt... whatever.

She most definitely did not subscribe to the 10-15 minute cooling off period.  LOlz.

My mom got mad at me one time when she had one of her high heel shoes in her hand.  She smacked me with that shoe and the heel punctured my leg.  That was the last time she ever smacked me.  My sisters on the other hand would stab me with forks when they baby sat me.  They always warned me that if I told mom I'd regret it and I believed them.  She finally saw the puncture marks one time though.
