New Don Blankenship Campaign Ad Touts Jobs Created In Wake Of Upper Big Branch Mining Disaster

Quote

RAWL, WV—Extolling the variety of ways his past actions continue to benefit the hard-working people of West Virginia, a new campaign ad from Senate hopeful Don Blankenship aired Friday touting the multitude of new jobs created in the wake of the Upper Big Branch Mine disaster. “I’m Don Blankenship, and I’m proud to say that my vision and leadership created countless new job opportunities in the fields of search and rescue, emergency surgery, funeral services, and many more,” said Blankenship, referring to the 2010 mine explosion that killed 29 workers, for which he served a year in prison for conspiring to violate federal mine safety standards. “From trauma specialists and morticians all the way down to the manufacturers of vigil candles, gravestones, and sympathy cards, I’m committed to putting West Virginians to work. I’ve even created 29 new coal mining jobs. Can Mitch McConnell say the same?” Blankenship concluded the ad with a stern condemnation of the “big-government” safety regulations hell-bent on stifling the state’s economic growth.

China not buying any US soybeans is going to cause people pain and the cause is easily understood by everyone.  That's going to have traction among farmers and it will have happened before November.

I hope this, and other trade issues, is able to have an affect on the Nebraska race.  Deb Fischer is the one-term Republican incumbent and Jane Raybould is the presumptive Democratic challenger.  I have high hopes for this.

Fischer has been a lazy Senator and, so far, a lazy campaigner.  During her six years, she has remained mostly mute with her pet legislation having something to do with a tax incentive for family leave. She has refused to do any town halls in Omaha or Lincoln, and instead is trying to run up her support in rural Nebraska.  (She is from Western NE, which has few large towns.)  Nebraska is fourth largest soybean producers, but there are concerns for corn and cattle as well.  Farmers may be afraid of unruly blacks and flamboyant gays, but they follow commodity prices on a daily basis.

Raybould is a moderate Democrat, from a business background (grocery stores), and has served on Lincoln's city council.  She has been campaigning hard for a while, including rural Nebraska having held an event in every county I believe.

Granted, Trump won the state by 25 points and Fischer has a considerable advantage in campaign cash.  And I believe Raybould is nominally pro-life, which is a major drag even in Omaha politics. But I still have hope for this one.  With the right combination of Trump-scandal, crop prices, and better campaigning, Raybould could pull this off.

Are we all in agreement that Braun is probably the best-case scenario for Donnelly in Indiana?  I mean, I don't think he's a bad candidate.  He's just not as an experienced a campaigner as Messer and Rokita, and those types of candidates often make mistakes when the spotlight shines on them.

Amazing

It’s the perfect encapsulation of where we are as a country. Imagine the stupidest, most depraved, contrary to basic humanity and logical self interest decision that you can make. Then triple it. Then triple it again. And there we are.

I know it’s been overdone, but it’s truly undeniable now - we’re a pure idiocracy.

Short of Blankenship, Morrisey winning in West Virginia was the preferable option for Democrats.  Jenkins coming from the southern part of the state would have made it really tough for Manchin to win those coal-country voters who vote for him but who also vote for Trump.

I think the same is true of Braun in Indiana.  It's just a lot harder to go against someone who's already been elected to federal office.

That's not to say that either Morrisey or Braun are bad candidates--they're not.  They're just not as formidable as I suspect their opponents would have been.  And for Donneley, it probably doesn't matter--he's probably screwed either way.

Heitkamp is running a campaign ad now. She touts the fact she has voted with President Trump "more than half the time."

She seems to think the election is a Referendum on President Trump, and he will win. So she wants to ride his coat tails.
