Venetian Poker update (LVRJ):

The Venetian plans to reopen its poker room June 5 with reduced hours and with four players to a table, as required by the state Gaming Control Board.

That start date is contingent, a Venetian spokeswoman said, on the approval of Gov. Steve Sisolak, who said Thursday that casinos could reopen June 4.

The poker room will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m., the spokeswoman said via email. Games will be played four-handed with a reduced rake (house cut) taken from each hand, she said.

Players will not be required to wear masks, but the poker room will have them available for patrons. Masks that obscure a person’s entire face are prohibited, she said.

Extra cleaning protocols will be used, including the sanitizing of the table rails, chairs and chips every two hours, she said. Plexiglass dividers will not be used at the tables.

The Venetian’s DeepStack tournament series will not run while these guidelines are in place, the spokeswoman said. The poker room will offer $100 buy-in, winner-take-all, single-table tournaments that start as soon as four players have registered.

Lol at the sad fucks who show up just to play slots.

I’ve been to Winstar once.  Slots or not, sad fucks is an understatement to describe the vast majority of the clientele there.  Ever feeling a little down about yourself and need a self-esteem boost, just take a swing through that place.

Walmart serves the same purpose and has the added benefit of not requiring me to cross the Red River.

During my KC years we had Isle of Capri, which was affectionately knows as Pile of Debris.  Similar I’m sure.

And this.

What tickles me is when I'm told that Winstar is just as fancy and upscale as all those places in Vegas.  I just nod and agree. While I'm sure it's a little more refined than some of the places on Fremont or spread out in the Valley, it just doesn't compare.

Winstar started out as a series of big tents with slots and crappy food options. The bulk of the crowd comes from the DFW area and it’s similar to hitting up a flea market.

They’ve made some great improvements over the years. It’s nowhere in the same conversation as anything approaching the higher end of Vegas, but it’s half decent in some of the offerings. They have one of the best run and most active poker rooms anywhere. The food went from awful to passable in that they added a Kirby’s steakhouse from Dallas and a few other places. It’s nowhere close to a food destination but at least some of the food doesn’t suck anymore. The new hotel towers offer respectable accommodations maybe on par with your average Marriott. It’s not the Encore.

At one point they tried to have a nightclub called Mist and that went as badly as you can imagine but the people watching was hilarious. Their concert venue is atrocious, basically like a ballroom with folding chairs and bleacher seating on the sides. They could and should do so much better considering they actually attract entertainers that large amounts of people want to see.

I think it’s maybe the #2 casino in the world on gaming space. It’s shaped like an L and it’s like 0.93 miles to from walk from one end (bingo) to the other end (hotel). A huge negative is the rake or anti they take from table games, which doesn’t happen in Vegas, so you are really altering the math to play those in Oklahoma.

I'll second Winstar's shitty concert venue. Been twice. First time was right after they opened it. Was sure they had improved it when I went last November. It's still shitty.

Yep, nothing more than a ballroom   Kind of pathetic.

Got this email from Wynn...

Spoiler

Dear Landomatic,

For nearly three full months, I've been looking forward to writing this letter. I am delighted to tell you we will be reopening Wynn Las Vegas and Encore soon. For us, that means we're able to finally do what drives us every day: create exceptional guest experiences.

You will receive the full Las Vegas experience at Wynn from the moment you arrive. We plan to open both Wynn and Encore hotels, 16 restaurants, 6 bars and lounges, 3 shopping esplanades, 5 pools, 2 salons, the golf course and both Wynn and Encore casinos. In other words, Vegas just as you remember it.

At Wynn Las Vegas, you'll get the full amenities you've come to know us for on day one, all under one roof, so you'll enjoy the comfort and peace of mind of never having to leave the resort.

Because we have continued to pay all our employees throughout our closure, our team has remained intact and united, ready to deliver the level of service you expect as soon as you step through our doors.

We enlisted a team of top-rated medical professionals from Georgetown and Johns Hopkins Universities to help develop our health and safety program that is now considered the gold standard in our industry. Our goal: do absolutely everything we can to ensure the health and safety of our guests, so you can enjoy a relaxing getaway.

A few things you can expect to see:

  • Non-invasive thermal temperature scans at all guest and employee entrances (no guest with a temperature of 100.4 or more will be allowed in the resort)
  • All employees wearing face coverings
  • Complimentary guest face coverings
  • Nearly 300 hand sanitizer stations throughout the resort
  • A team of cleaning professionals sanitizing guest areas 24-hours a day

All Wynn employees will be COVID-19 tested before they start work and have been thoroughly trained in health safety.

I understand that you want to make your first getaway worthwhile. We are preparing in every way possible to meet your expectation and make your vacation fun, convenient and safe.

I look forward to seeing you soon and to saying our three favorite words: Welcome to Wynn.

Warmest Regards,

Ramesh Sadhwani

So 100.3 degrees isn't considered a fever anymore?

And you're telling me all employees are being tested every day before they start work?  I must have missed something on the amount of tests available.  Or are they saying they'll all be tested one time before they reopen?  Big deal if that's the case.

Both talking points seem a little misleading/confusing.

I don't know what the number is they'd have to pay me to get me to go stay in Vegas for a few days right now, but it's a pretty big number.

100.4 seems to be the number that most businesses are using to deny entry and then further screen. Right or wrong I’ve seen that number used universally.

On the employee testing, all the Wynn employees are being tested prior to starting back to work. As to the ongoing nature of employee testing I think that is contingent on screening, ie not automatic test every shift. There was a recent news report that UMC medical was partnering with a few of the big casinos to have large amount of testing available at the convention center location I believe.

100.4F has been a widely accepted cutoff for a fever for a long time.

Got the same email. I wondered what happens if a guest develops a fever or illness during their stay. They don’t let them back in the Wynn and I assume send them somewhere for COVID testing and medical treatment. What if the guest then tests positive for COVID? They can’t just fly home at that point. If critically ill they would be hospitalized in Vegas, but if not critically ill and not allowed back in the Wynn or presumably any other hotel, where do they go to quarantine themselves? Rent a car and drive home? Seems like Vegas will need a hotel devoted to housing quarantine people.

I’m not overly worried about Vegas. The Wynn is a huge property with high ceilings and lots of outdoor areas. The things that normally attract huge crowds - EBC, clubs, shows, craps tables - will be closed or severely limited. Restaurants and bars will have limited capacity. I think all of those things combined with awareness over mask usage, hand sanitizer, etc will make it relatively okay for otherwise young and healthy travelers. The plane and airport would be the highest risk IMO.

The question for me is how much fun will it be with those measures in place? I’m gonna wait and see if it loosens up a little more throughout the summer.

LAS VEGAS (FOX5) -- The Bureau of Land Management on Wednesday announced that it will be increasing recreational access at Red Rock and Sloan Canyon National Conservation Areas beginning June 1.

According to a news release, beginning June 1, BLM Southern Nevada will reopen access to:

Red Rock Canyon Scenic Drive
Red Rock Overlook
Late Night Trailhead
Red Spring Boardwalk
Calico Basin and Kraft Mountain Trailheads
The Sloan Canyon NCA parking area at Nawghaw Poa Road

During this phase, according to the release, the Red Rock Scenic Drive will be open daily from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Late exit and overnight permits will not be issued until further notice.

Parking is only permitted in parking lots and not along the Scenic Drive, the release notes. When the parking lots are full and the area hits capacity, the gates will be temporarily closed until the area drops below capacity.

"The Red Rock Campground will remain closed, as it closes annually between Memorial Day and Labor Day weekend."

The release states that the Sloan Canyon parking area at Nawghaw Poa Road will be open Friday through Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

With public health in mind, the BLM says the following facilities/areas remain closed at this time:

Red Rock Canyon Visitor Center
Red Spring Picnic Area
All campsites at the Red Rock Campground
The Sloan Canyon Visitor Contact Station

Well much to my own surprise, the wife and I are headed to Vegas for their reopening, staying June 4-6 at Wynn.

It's our anniversary, which we normally do in St. Barth, obviously nixed by COVID. We had then booked a few nights in Charleston but they had lots of vandalism from protests/rioting and now a lot of their shops/restaurants are boarded up and there's a curfew, so not sounding too promising. We considered driving to Colorado but that's a long drive. Considered driving to Florida but bad weather in the forecast. We knew Wynn is opening up and we like the property enough to just stay there, so that's the easiest/safest option given that the whole world is currently broken.

The plan is brunch, screwing, pool time, spa, screwing, gambling, dinner, screwing, sleeping. No Cirque shows, no clubs, no Spearmint Rhino, just hanging out at Wynn/Encore for a couple of days.

Huh...report back...I guess.

I’d get the biggest fucking suite in the Wynn Towers they have, or maybe even a bungalow.  And I’d pretty much either be in it or by the pool the entire fucking time.  And demand room service from all my favorite restaurants.  Trust me...they’ll do it.  I’d normally say an apartment in the Encore towers, but they’re too far from everything.  Wynn tower is steps from the pool and brunch (assuming you know where to do brunch) and get an outside table, obviously.  And I’d order a stripper to the room.  Otherwise, what’s the point?  Skip gambling and spa.  Could be a nice little trip.

The point is that we’ve been cooped up in the house for 2.5 months and we’re desperate to do something for our anniversary. Every other option we’ve explored has been a no-go for a myriad of reasons, and we have a pretty good idea of what to expect from 48 hours at Wynn/Encore, and even if it’s a watered down version of our normal trips, that’s ok with us all things considered.

I did not get a salon suite but I did get a pretty good deal, by far the cheapest 2 night stay I’ve ever had there.

We thought it might actually be cool to be among the first guests inside the Wynn in over 2 months. Maybe there will be a return to their once famous customer service where they treat everyone like royalty.

I’ll report back.

Well, as posted earlier, on our limited budget I booked a 3 night SWA vacation July 6th for a total of $727. It includes round trip nonstop flights from Love Field and a wraparound suite. Freakin’ good deal.
That’s to make up for her birthday, Mothers Day, and our upcoming 53rd anniversary.

The "what's the point" comment was specific to getting a stripper to the room.  As in, if you're not gonna have a stripper, what's the point in even going to Vegas at all?  It was a joke...kind of.

Hah, I’m kind of tone deaf with everything happening lately. I forgot about jokes. I’ll try to sell the wife on the private stripper situation, maybe pitch it as a form of philanthropy to help out a struggling industry.
