I don't like Vegas at all and haven't been in over a decade and a half but my wife has never been and keeps bringing it up. Thinking going to have to take her once later this year just so she can see it. Already dreading it as far as I can figure it's way more expensive, more corporate, and an even bigger pain in the ass as it was in 2003 when I went last. Going to blow a ton of money on shit I can't stand while I could have used it for a much better trip.

Anyway, flying from Texas I found round trip flights for two and 4 nights at luxury suite in the Venetian for $840 total. That sounds like a good deal to me but is it?

I don't like gambling, don't like going to plays or live acting shows, don't care to see Britney Spears or Backstreet boys or Wayne Newton or else is there, dont care for overpriced food served in pretentious settings, and don't really like being in the middle of a fucking desert.

Now Barcelona or New Zealand or Dubrovnik/Croatian coast? I have a blast in those type of places. Vegas is just an ode to excess and a lot that I find wrong about America

Room rates in Vegas vary greatly depending on the exact dates. Off the top of my head, I will say that sounds like a decent package with the airfare. Venetian has large rooms that are fairly high quality. Check the fine print, you may additionally be on the hook for a daily resort fee which is around $40/day.

Shit, didn't think about resort fees. Thanks I'll check but I'm pretty sure gonna have to pay it. Is it feasible to take Uber/Lyft everywhere? I really don't want to have to rent a car

No it wasn't an either/or. We're going to Kauai later in the year so thinking Vegas for our small trip this spring. Her friend went in November and now she wants to go since she's never been.

Post a pic of your wife...I’m sure someone here will be desperate enough to take her so you don’t have to.

$840 for flights + 4 nights at Venetian?  To me, the 4 nights at Venetian should be at the very least $840 by itself.

As others have stated, that  does not include resort fees.  2019 resort fees for Venetian  (including tax) are $51 per day.

An aside, judging from the rest of your post.  I hope your wife falls in love with Vegas, and drags your unhappy ass up and down the strip till 2 am.

I would say so, but 4 nights is a fucking beating. My group insists on 3 nights, but I usually stay in my room by the third night because the noise, flashing lights, and alcohol poisoning are giving me seizures by that point.

Vegas wears me the fuck out after about 48 hours, but if you can't find something to do in that town that you like, that's on you.

Yep...I used to be able to handle 3 nights pretty easy, but I’m pretty well done after 2 anymore too.

4 nights are my limit.  We've stayed 6 before, and that was a beating.  Wife loves Vegas, and probably could stay for 6 or 7 nights.

One thing we do is book a meal someplace (SW, Prime, etc) on the last night we are there. Set the reservation early for Vegas (6-7 PM), go have a drink, a meal, a postgame drink or two and then head back to room around 10.  It's a schedule roughly like we would have at home, and makes the last night manageable. YMMV.

One other thing we do when we go:  we set a reservation for the Sterling Brunch @ Bally's.  It's Sundays only, and they start at 9.  If you've never heard of it (or been) it's pretty damned good.  By setting a reservation that early in the morning, it forces our Saturday night not to be so...eventful.

Yeah that’s all well and good if you’ve got the discipline to keep the reservations.  We’ve tried similar tactics, then always canceled or changed...depending on the circumstances.

Vegas is a LOT more fun if you don’t have too much of a schedule nor too much of a budget.

We just stayed at the Venetian for four nights in October on a SWA package from Austin. About $1100 including resort fees and two r/t nonstop flights.

I recall staying there for 5 nights @$59/night (no resort fees) in December of 2001. SWA nonstop round trip flights from Austin were  $79 each. That was in the post 9/11 depression.

Wife and I were talking a bit ago; we are going later this summer and one of the things we do every trip is eat at a different steak house.  We've done Prime, SW, etc and this trip, I told her I'd like to try The Steakhouse at Circus Circus, but can also go someplace else.

I've read reviews and whatnot, and we've been to Circus Circus so we know what to expect from a casino/ambiance standpoint, but have any Surly folk dined at this place?

You can take Uber/Lyft easily, but if your trip is starting from one of the casinos just take a cab.  There will be a line outside that you can usually just walk up to and get in one.  I tried Uber twice from a casino and it was a small beating going to the Uber area and waiting and finding your ride.  If you go off strip and need a ride back though, definitely do Uber.

The Uber area at Linq is fucking ass.  You walk out the north door, then take a right down a sidewalk past the taxis and just keep walking until you get to Rape Alley.  Then under a buzzing florescent  light, there's a sign about 6 feet up on a wall that says rideshare or some shit.  Classy.

On the other hand Aria, Wynn, Caesars (and I'm forgetting a place or two) actually have Uber pick up/drop off close to the front door.

Another pro tip that I should have realized years ago but just figured out last trip.  When you go to the bank to get your gambling cash before the trip, get $40-$100 in $1's and $5's.  Wherever you go there will be expectations of tips.

I usually take a bunch of $2 bills along with the fives for tips. Drink girls love them.

We tried Circus Circus steakhouse about 7 years ago.  It had a nice steakhouse atmosphere, the food was good not great, but I didn't feel like I had gotten raped when we left.  You need to go Birdbox on the way in because one look at the casino and it's clientele will make you lose your appetite.

I’m on the hunt for newish restaurants that have surprised or delighted those here. We’re staying at Aria but are open to venture out quite a bit for the right meal.

Any thoughts?

If you are looking for new, Catch just opened at Aria.

It's Aria.   But if it were at Cosmo, then, yeah.

Stayed at Aria a couple weeks ago.  Catch was night 3 and it was a total shit show.  Only meal we didn’t care for.  Their service was shit and they pretty much had a “we’re the coolest newest thing on the strip so go fuck yourself” mentality about everything.  Timing was horrendous to the point of ruining our night despite several complaints.  We finally just told them to cancel everything else we had ordered and left.  Only meal we were really disappointed in.

Did Jean George Steakhouse the first night and it was outstanding.  A little quiet and pretty spendy, but food and service were as good as any steakhouse I’ve ever had.  Cool space too.

Carbone was night 2 and it was the best.  Food, service...perfect.  Reasonable enough price for the level of night.  We all had a blast and loved everything about it.  In fact, we went there for a second time on night 3 after we left Catch half way through our meal because it was such a clusterfuck.

Don’t miss the Julian Serrano Tapa place there too.  Went for lunch one day and it was as good of a version of Spanish food as any of us have ever had, by a long shot.  Not sure how authentic it was, but every bite was fantastic.  My wife, who used to live in Spain and is kind of a Spanish food snob, thought it was amazing.

Only other place we went was Javier’s, but just for a snack and some Margaritas.  We’ve got so much TexMex in Texas, I wouldn’t waste a meal on it.  But everything we had was about as good as anything in Texas.

Oh and I had a slice from the pizza place there one night but it was really late and I was pretty drunk so I don’t really remember that.  Don’t think it was anything great.

Overall, Aria was a nice change of pace.  It’s not going to replace the Wynn/Encore for me but I’m glad we tried something different.  Hopefully Wynn/Encore gets their shit back together by the time we return.  Place fell apart when Steve got the boot.

Heading out for first weekend of March Madness, first time doing that. Staying at Harrah's.  I'm a member of the March Madness in Las Vegas Facebook group which has a ton of info about watch parties, sports books, etc. but I'm looking for any first hand experience y'all have from that weekend. We have one afternoon booked at Top Golf in the top floor cabanas and are thinking we'll probably wander the Linq area one afternoon and probably hit downtown one night. Any specific experiences/watch parties that y'all recommend?

My wife and I were at Westgate last year for the first day of the tournament.  It wasn’t bad, we were able to get a table at the food court right outside the sportsbook around 8 am (games started at 9).  The only real advice I have for you is if you plan on making a lot of bets on games. Go load up your cash on one of the mobile apps because the lines at the books are stupid.

I dig the steakhouse at circus circus. Go there every time I'm in Vegas now. It's an enigma for sure, given the location, but I just love the old school vibe. And I think the beef stands up to anywhere else in town.

Going to Vegas with two other couples at the end of Feb.  I'm sad to see the poor review for Catch on the previous page was corroborated by poor Yelp reviews.   I was pretty excited about it based on the description I read.   We are staying at Vdara so walking across to Aria is very easy.

Anyone have first hand experience with Rose.Rabbit.Lie?  Thoughts?  I was thinking it might be fun to do dinner there then catch the Absinthe-esque show "Opium" afterward.

Also going to be playing Shadow Creek for the first time.  Any insider info on that? Must dos? Things to avoid?

TIA

No personal experience with RRL, but I was also considering it for the trip in a few weeks and the reviews seem solid.

I generally don’t make it out that way until March... what’s the reservation situation in Feb? Book early kinda situation or are you usually good on the day of if it’s a mid-week trip?
