Was at a party and the usual suspects were playing in the background. Later in the evening after Christmas vacation someone put it on the American Dad Christmas episodes and then the It’s always Sunny Christmas episode and they fucking killed. I’ve never really watched American Dad and only saw the Sunny Special once, and maybe it was the rum, but those were real good night Enders.

Lethal Weapon is cheesy on every level but it works, because 80s.

It's extremely cheesy. I watched it again this morning. If you thought Gary Busey was hilarious then you must have found Mel Gibson hamming it up trying to look tough and mysterious to be positively hysterical.

How did Mr. Joshua know where Riggs was going to be questioning a hooker on the street when he shot him up after the hit on Hunsaker? How did he even know who Riggs was or that he was on the case? Did he figure that out just from the helicopter when he killed Kelly's dad? There were a lot of people out on the lawn.

Why was Murtaugh watching from across the street when Riggs was talking to the hooker? Were they expecting a hit? Apparently not because Murtaugh didn't know Riggs was wearing his bullet proof vest. We saw that the brakes work on the buses in L.A. when Murtaugh ran across the street after Riggs got shot.

How did Mr. Joshua know about Murtaugh? He couldn't have seen him in Hunsaker's office. How did he know about him and where to go to kill his daughter's boyfriend and kidnap her? How did the general manage to get the drop on Riggs out in the desert, on foot, from the meeting place? Why did they take two captured cops back to the site of the heroin delivery in order to interrogate them?

Let's grant that it was plausible for Murtaugh to know that Mr. Joshua was driving to the freeway and could give Riggs a shortcut to beat him there on foot so he could engage him in a shootout with automatic weapons on a road crowded with citizens. And apparently none of them were shot accidentally. After Joshua got away, and they figured out he'd be going to the Murtaugh home, how did they get there before him, evacuate the family, and write him a note from "the good guys?"

After Riggs took off on foot for Joshua, Murtaugh went back for the general. He confronted him in a car speeding through the alleyway, took aim, and shot...the general's driver. Fortunately, happenstance came to the rescue again as this time the brakes on the bus weren't used and the general's car got smashed. Otherwise he might have lobbed some of those grenades in Murtaugh's direction and gotten away.

When they went to question Amanda Hunsaker's "meal ticket" without a warrant, someone just happens to open the gate on their way out and invite them into the party. There's a lot of random chance used to move the story along.

Die Hard is a much, much better movie. Earning 20 percent? Please.

Students are watching The Polar Expreszsright now.  Maybe I'm just being a dick, but this movie is horrible.

Agreed. It was panned when it came out. No idea why they keep trying to force it on us at Christmas. It’s not getting any better. A friend said the Venn diagram between those that like Polar Express and those that like Olive Garden is almost a complete overlap.

Polar Express has some great 3D which makes it worth watching.

Allergies act up when Mr Gower slaps young George and then towards the end when Mr Gower turns out to be an ex-con drunk.

Wow. A lot to unpack here. Happy Holidays, I hope you're enjoying some vacation time.

I'll concede that Lethal Weapon is "more of a Christmas movie" than Die Hard. More Christmas songs, more home for the holidays type moments, but no one can argue that Lethal Weapon is the superior film.

I'm sure Die Hard has just as many plot holes, but it works better as a film than Lethal Weapon. There's not a single character in either film that can carry Alan Rickman's jock. Die Hard was nominated and won several minor Academy Awards in 1989. Dustin Hoffman won Best Actor for his role in Rain Main. I'm not saying Rickman was better than Hoffman, but Rickman should have been nominated. We're still talking about Hans Gruber 30 years later. Hell Rickman could have been nominated for his role as Clay, Bill Clay.

My main complaint with Lethal Weapon is the ridiculous saxophone rifts and the silly MMA Fight as the end of movie. Murtaugh could have shot Mr. Joshua at least 30 times, but the LAPD felt the need to let the honorable warriors finish their own fight? So if Mr. Joshua kills Riggs, does the LAPD just shoot him afterwards?

The classic black and white films. Miracle on 34th, A Wonderful Life,  Alister Simms in A Christmas Carol,  the color movies: just for the schmaltz it is White Christmas, Die Hard, A Christmas Story, The Waltons movie, The Homecoming is underrated and kinda lost.

The saxaphone riffs are fantastic. Come at me, Bro!

Watched this out of curiosity over the weekend.  I appreciate what the filmmakers were shooting for, but it missed by a couple of million creepy elves and a few tons of bricks and a giant scrotum sack of toys.  The big finale scene with Santa's entrance in the North Pole town square was like a Bizarroworld fire ant documentary or Nazi propaganda film.  Those elves resembled the odd Pinocchio in Shrek.  Being un-Disney is fine but these critters are fucking off-putting.  I did watch it all, I confess.    Nightmarish, alas.

Die Hard

Elf

A Christmas Story

And now Fatman

I ll throw in some animation and classics like White Christmas and Its a Wonderful Life.

Good list. I hate musicals, but White Christmas is a flawless movie.

I’m probably in the extreme minority here, but I’m over Elf. Ferrell is playing at an 11 the entire movie and it’s tiresome. It’s a better movie with more Newhart.

1.  A Christmas Story

2.  Christmas Vacation

3.  Home Alone

I watched the old Rudolph narrated by Burl Ives when I was a kid and my kids saw it a few years ago and where amazed by it.  Guess seeing something different than all the cartoons/anime today was a shock.  Anyways they love it so we watch it every year.  They also love the Muppet Christmas Carol.

Flawless?  Then, please explain the bizarre Danny Kaye dance scene that had nothing to do with the movie.

Danny Kaye was one of the greatest dancers of all time, they needed an excuse for a dance number.

Not to mention, Danny’s gay side coming out of closet.

Watched Polar Express with the kids on Thanksgiving night, as is our tradition to kick off the Christmas season.  And then watched Die Hard after they went to bed, which is my tradition.

I thought I was the only one on here who didn't like Ferrell's acting. I made it through Elf until the scene where he lost his shit when he heard Santa was coming.

I like some of the old Christmas movies.

White Christmas (how could anyone watch Danny Kaye shove off Vera Ellen and not know he was gay?)

vera_ellen_vintage_lewes.jpg

Miracle on 34th Street

Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol

Others listed (Scrooged, Die Hard, Christmas Story, Christmas Vacation)

I love White Christmas.  One of my faves.  But, man oh man, Vera Ellen's anorexia was showing in that movie.  She was a twig.

Basically stretching my legs on shitty Christmas Movies. At least one Hallmark a week since July, deep sigh, it's a tradeoff of a heterosexual marriage.

I'm so conditioned, that I'm watching Prancer right now and I'm wondering where the hell Candance Cameron and Danica McKellar are.

It’s A Wonderful Life (in black & white)

A Christmas Story

Home Alone

Battleground

The Homecoming

Dumbest decision: Love Actually. This would be a family holiday classic if the idiot director had eliminated the totally gratuitous nudity, sex, and porn element.

Worst: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

I do NOT approve of your disparaging tone towards gratuitous sex and nudity - but all you have to do is watch the version that airs on cable.  They delete that entire storyline.

Damn, forgot one or my favorites, since you rarely see it on TV anymore, but before "The Waltons" there was a stand-alone TV movie called The Homecoming.  It's really good.  You can find it on youtube.

Thought this was a Thanksgiving movie, but I haven’t seen it in a couple of decades!

Family Holiday Classic?

If you remove the adult storylines of Laura Linney, “Collin”, Martin Freeman (porn double), and Bill Nighy, you’d still get sexual harassment, infidelity with smokin’ hot assistant, and jealous Rick Grimes. And a bunch of other adult themes.

Its an quirky, R-rated, British RomCom. Leave it be and dont show it to kids or grandma.

I’d even argue the innocent porn doubles totally belong.

I generally approve of gratuitous sex and nudity, and any hot actress I will google if they’ve been nekkid. My issue is that my wife watched this movie with my mom and I walked in as the scene in question played.

Good call... And thanks for the YouTube reminder. Just watched it again tonight, my family hadn't seen it.

I just noticed in this year's viewing that they mention the "Abraham number" as a throwaway line during a rehearsal scene transition.

My Christmas list was one movie each year and that was Christmas Vacation. Not because there are not other entertaining Christmas movies, there are plenty, but that was the one I see every year. I head to the theatre to watch it whatever day it gets shown and it’s fun to think back through past Christmases while watching it.

This year added a 2nd movie to the list. Violent Night will be a must-see for me going forward. I saw it twice this year. I may watch it again before it is done in the theatre. It’s everything you can possibly want in a Christmas movie. Quite the heart-warming tale of a family banding together to share in the spirit of the season.
