I heard on the radio this morning:

Military is going to be temporarily housing "thousands" of Afghani refugees at various bases, including Fort Hood, and another in Wisconsin, iirc. I assume those are translators and the like, plus their families.

Get ready for fear mongering squared from Abbott, Cruz, and their ilk

GQP: BIDEN IS ABANDONING THE BRAVE AFGHANISTAN PEOPLE WHO STOOD WITH US, ACTED AS INTERPRETERS FOR OUR TROOPS!"

Biden: Okay, we're bringing them to the US and will house them near our Army bases, where they will know people!

GQP: BIDEN IS TRYING TO DILUTE OUR VOTE AND BRING IN DIRTY IMMIGRANTS FROM HELLHOLE COUNTRIES!

He's a Republican voter now due to the radical left agenda, but just can't admit it because of the stigma of siding with Trump?

I don't know, that's the best my stupidity translator can muster.

This. Is it a matrix reference?

Do red pills make you irredeemably stupid? Because if so, I’d totally believe Maher took a shitload of them.

The world doesn’t have to be just black and white, all or nothing, A+ or a failing grade. There are shades of grey. B’s, C’s, and D’s exist. I’ve always thought Maher was a B-list comedian but that doesn’t mean he didn’t come up with a fair amount of good comedy. I think he’s slumping a little bit in his old age, he wants to be more appealing to right-wing guests who he wants to appear on his show, he’s always had a little West Coast flake to him and isn’t the most educated person in the world when it comes to science. And he rebels against the bizarre politics in California.

But tell me what’s wrong with this:

Grift or not if Fox News viewers can listen to someone espousing progressive policies like M4A I'm for it. If Dems actually fought for progressive policies people wouldn't have to go on Tucker fucking Carlson to get their message out.

Jimmy Dore is an algorithm chasing, trojan horse fraud that the right finds to be a useful tool for fragmenting the left.  Other than that, he was once a less than mediocre stand up comedian -- that shit didn't pay the bills, though.  But he does scream "fuck" and "fuck you" and "fuck you, we're done with your bullshit, fuck you" and then he bugs his eyes out and yells "fuck" some more, and that level of passionate commentary is an intriguing formula for many people.  If you are interested in someone who is the type of "mad as hell and not gonna take it anymore" kinda guy, then Jimmy Dore has an archive suited for you.  The Internet is bereft of angry loud people and Jimmy Dore is here to fill that void.

I'm old enough to remember when Tucker spent months defending the death of George Floyd, saying it was warranted and he wasn't worthy of saving.

But a petty misdemeanor by a black man is way worse than a traitor attempting to overthrow the government by a God-fearing white woman.

did not watch, but is TC on board with NM's stance on vax hesitancy?  or making fun of it?  Fox probably has a team of mathematicians on retainer to churn the numbers on the correct stance to take that still feeds maga racism but does not promote the vax.

Except when they argue in front of a judge that he is not to be taken seriously and he’s just an entertainer. And aren’t you glad that NewsCorp never contradicts itself?

I think a large part of his audience knows this, but doesn't care.  Much like trumpkins.  Sure, there is a contingent of absolute batshit crazy ones, but I think the plurality of them know deep down this is all bullshit, but they are horrible people, so they enjoy it.

Wait, so you're saying the stripper that said she really likes me...she may be lying?  And I may know that deep down inside...and somehow...not care?  Because I need to feel better about myself?

They just spent four years watching their favorite President make repeated claims and statements that they (and he) knew were bullshit.

Shit, just with the "LOCK HER UP" crap they went through for four years, with Trump's DOJ never actually doing anything.

And when they hear Hannity, etc. bring up Hunter's laptop and Hillary's emails, etc., etc. and nothing every happens.

They know.

The only crazy thing is that here in 2021, we have an amazing amount of on-demand content through the various streaming services, including plenty of content that would appeal to these folks, and they choose to waste their evenings watching Tucker and Hannity.

It's actually really sad, and I have basically said as much to relatives who watch these shows in the evenings.  One of them clearly had/has an addiction of some sort, and every week or two for quite a while, I'd ask them if there was anything new about Hillary's emails or Hunter's laptop.  I pointed out to them that for the 2-3 hours of this shit they watch every night, that just makes them mad since nothing will change about whatever Tucker/Hannity spouted off about, they could have watched a favorite old movie that made them happy.

It's sad and pathetic.

Are there left-wingers/Democrats/liberals who are addicted to watching evening news on MSNBC/CNN/etc.?

Because I just don't know any - granted I know more Republicans than Democrats, but still, it seems odd that I don't know anybody addicted to Maddow/etc.

I know a few who make it a point to listen to stuff on NPR everyday, but that's more like when they are commuting/jogging/biking.

I only flip on the news channels when there's something really, really big going on. I couldn't Imagine a worse evening than purposely tuning in to see what Chris Cuomo, Don Lemon, Tucker Carlson or Sean Hannity are saying on a nightly basis.

There's a reason that Fox is "America's most-watched news network!"  That's because non-morons don't get most of their news from TV.  Like most of y'all, I only watch cable news when there is a particular ongoing event I want to check out (election night, an active violent revolt to overthrown the government of my country, that sort of thing).  Otherwise, I read my news from a variety of sources.  And I listen to NPR on my morning and evening commute -- I get a mix of news in the morning, and then in the evening (depending on when I head home), I get financial news or "All Things Considered," where I get to hear Cicely Strong tell stories about her middle school years.

If you are sitting at home and watching cable news for hours, you are most likely a Fox-news type consumer of information.

Turn off the fucking TV.

So by admitting he lies when cornered or "something", does this mean he remembers that night with Gaetz and the underage girl?

Every admission is a confession, right?

When dotard first took office and I wasn't super politically aware, I started watching a good amount of CNN in the evenings for a few weeks until I realized it was the same shit over and over and over.  I still check out Wolf or Erin Burnett for 20 minutes or so a couple of times a week, but just to get the major headlines.  Of course the Surl is a good amalgam of news, twitter, bullshit, and twitter all day long while I'm supposed to be working.  So that's fun.

Yeah, there's entertaining non-political shows on there, but I just don't know anybody on the left who sits around listening for hours every day to lefty political stuff.

It's the night-time, editorial/opinion shows that give you brain worms.

Fox is even more one-sided than CNN but CNN has its' moments. CNN is more inept that corrupt. Fox is the opposite. (Truthfully, they're pretty inept too.)

I heard an interesting deal on Ted Turner and TBS/TNT etc.  In the early days of his satellite/cable channels, they came under FCC regulation or some such and were told that they had to devote a certain number of hours a day to news.  Turner hated this and really didn't want to have to do it.  So he wound up creating news shows that were infotainment.  And before long, it was among the highest rated stuff on his network.  Voila, CNN.

I check out Reuters and the AP in the morning and/or listen to NPR in the car. If something is going on with the Teapot, then I watch/listen on C-Span or hit up the livestream of the WH press conference when I can. Just depends on if I'm desk bound or on the go. It's been nice since mid January not having a daily barrage of weirdness and wtf moments, other than the GOP trying to outperform the Kremlin and the Democratic party trying to figure out how to make everyone happy instead of just barging ahead and getting more shit done.

Or whomever the Surly poster was that ran into him a couple of times on a Jamaican beach during his family vacation. He should've ignored his wife's pleadings to not make a scene and kicked sand in that tucker's face.

Yeah that was me and I was getting drunk at the beach bar waiting for an opportunity to engage with him while some old dude in his wedding party was telling this gay couple how much better Republicans are for them since, you know, "Pol Pot was a socialist and that's what the Dems support." I did see him on a bike ride around the resort later and told him "fuck you Tucker!" as we biked by. My wife asked if I felt better and, frankly, I did. Still wish I could have coaxed him into the ocean for a "swim".
