Pelosi and Schumer should state that declaring an emergency is a non-starter for reopening the govt.  and that if trump goes that route, govt will only be reopened once the emergency is removed.

This is a point that trump needs to learn that he can’t do whatever he wants.   It’s either teach him that lesson now, later or let him continue as-is.  My opinion it’s better to have that fight now.

I realize it’s easy for me to say that when my paycheck hasn’t stopped since I don’t work for the govt.  however if pelosi and Schumer give in, trump will just have another shutdown over another issue in X months.  This is the only negotiation tactic he has now.

100% this.  Trump has grown up being able to do just about whatever the fuck he wants to do, and prior to 2017, just about anybody who would tell him “no” could be bought off or forced out of the way.

He’s a toddler who grew up with parents who think that if they buy him the next shiny thing, he’ll quiet down, and right now, the next shiny thing is Wall.

He completely backed himself into a corner that he can’t buy or bribe his way out of. And if the White House is actually trying to do an end-run around Congress and reduce Medicaid, Chuck and Nancy know his support in the Senate will weaken even more.   The olds and their families will lose their shit and begin ringing up their Senators and Reps like crazy.

While I agree in the spirit of standing up to Trump, this would be a political mistake.  It would put the blame for the shutdown on the democrats.   If Trump declares a national emergency, the Senate will likely pass the CR regardless of what Chuck or Nancy have to say and Trump will sign it.

As I’ve predicted many times, Trump isn’t going to declare an emergency because it would end the shutdown.  Trump WANTS to keep the shutdown going as long as he can because it slows down the justice coming for him.

In other words, Trump is indirectly obstructing justice or he thinks he is with the shutdown because he’s out of options.

Doesn’t the House have to pass the CR?   Pelosi has a say in that as speaker.

The House has already passed the CR.  It’s awaiting a vote in the senate.

I don’t know if CRs passed by one congress carry over to the next, but normal bills die in that circumstance.  Don’t know about CRs. Regardless that CR was only thru Feb 8th. I guess it might be passed as-is but we would be right back to the same place in a few weeks.

I just don’t believe that a national emergency declaration changes anything.

The only problem with that thinking is that the longer the shutdown goes on, the more Republican Senators will have to listen to extremely pissed off constituents who are losing money, possibly losing homes, businesses, etc.

Red states are being hurt by this.  .

The idea behind the national emergency is Trump gets immediate funding for the wall through his executive national emergency powers which will inevitably be shot down in the courts.

This makes the wall $ dispute in the CR irrelevant and gives Trump the ability to claim victory for ending the shutdown and building the wall.

If Pelosi could stonewall a new CR, she would be taking the blame for continuing the shutdown.

It’s a dumb idea.

Pelosi should start impeachment hearings if Trump declares a national emergency.  That’s the real leverage she has in this situation.

Any normal president would give up on Monday. But any normal president wouldn't have shut down the government anyway. So . .  .I'm out of work for a few more weeks. I just don't see a way out for Trump other than cutting his losses and continue to blame Democrats for obstructing his wall. Anyone think he's going to do that? It seems like with the national emergency route, there's not enough money available withoit taking from programs where there would be huge political blowback -- i.e. Hurricane relief.

Disagree. Impeachment hearings are a bad political move.  She wants trump running in 2020.  Mueller report may force the issue but that isn’t a decision for today.

peloisi wouldn’t be stonewalling a CR.  Wouldn’t she pass a CR that McConnell refuses to hold a vote?    That would be on McConnell and trump.

Mutiny in the Senate is where this has to break.

I could see GOP Senators telling Trump, “Either declare a national emergency to save face or we are going to pass legislation to re-open the government.”

In this scenario, I predict Trump would call their bluff and say, “Go ahead and take the vote, I dare you.”

This would be another convoluted loyalty test for GOP Senators which is what this really is anyway.

Sorry about your displacement.

It must have gotten a lot more expensive since I enlisted in 2004.  The number quoted to us was $60k for boot camp and around $260k for Recon Marines (the additional cost was infantry school, dive, jump and the other school whose acronyms escapes me, and $8k for the background check/security clearance).

She has already passed that CR and McConnell would take a vote if trump declared an emergency.  The shutdown would end so I don’t know what you’re getting at.

They are going to hold impeachment hearings at some point anyway, it’s inevitable.  They have to.  The Democratic base demands it. The question is how fast they go before they take a vote.

The Mueller report is just an excuse to hold off.

Holy Shit.  That whole thread.

I've been wondering all along through what conduit he was getting his marching orders.  It's probably more than one, but that appears to be open and shut.  Unfucking believable how simple that is, hiding in plain sight.

Trump's idea of negotiation is forcing the other side to accept total capitulation, and then spending weeks dancing in the end zone afterwards.

The government won't reopen with a deal. It'll have to be forced open with a delay on this negotiation.

I’ve been following that account for a while and I’m 95% sure it’s a troll.

It’s noteworthy but nothing substantial

you guys are funny we are going 90+ days, shit hasn't even gotten started yet.

Delay of tax returns and the likelihood TSA stops showing up to work makes this unlikely. I'm expecting to go back to work next week.

Air traffic controllers stop showing up.  Farms and other agricultural-related businesses going belly up.  And so on.

If the Dems were going to be blamed by a majority, it would have already happened.  The GOP and Trump are going to catch more and more blame the longer he hangs out on twitter talking shit.  Trump must not be listening to KellyAnne and the others who know how to read polls.

The fact that the Wall did not have ANY traction with the GOP when they controlled all three branches of government.  They were unable to come up with ANY plan whatsoever regarding health insurance and lied through their teeth in the 2016 election about supporting pre-existing conditions.  The ONLY reason it's a big issue now is the GOP can falsely blame the Dems, now that the Dems have a little bit of power.

I think the best strategy right now is for Pelosi and Schumer to keep refering to President McConnell.  Put the ball firmly in McConnell's court and make him the face of the crisis.  Donald Trump doesn't give a shit about anyone not named Trump.  Nobody, not a single soul.  So you need to find somebody with a least the smallest shred of decency.  And while McConnell's shred of decency is extremely small, he won't like being labeled President. I know it sounds silly as shit! But you have to think of dumbass shit to find solutions within the GOP these days.

Agreed, the only insignificant trade off is you’re moving blame from Trump to McConnell in the court of public opinion when Trump said he would own the shutdown.

Here’s a story.

Donald has a couple,of loyal friends of around three years, Joseph Q. Trumpkin, and Michael R. Senator.   Donnie, Mike, and Joe head out to a bar.

Donnie gets a foolish notion in his head and starts talking shit to a group of folks who don’t like what he’s saying.  Fisticuffs ensure, and Joe and Mike, being loyal friends, gamely wade in.

A few minutes in, and Joe is still holding his own, but clearly not for much longer. He’s starting to feel things are going south rapidly.  Mike is starting to get nervous as well.  He’s been a little bloodied, and somebody is starting to hit him in the kidneys.

Joe and Mike look around for Donnie to see how he’s doing, and they notice that somehow Donnie is no longer fighting.  Not only that, but Donnie appears unscathed and is sitting at a table having a nice snack.  Donnie is offering a running commentary on the fight, and in the midst of that commentary, he continues talking shit about the group of people Joe and Mike are fighting, claiming that he and Joe and Mike are going to kick all of their asses.

This just pisses that group off even more, and they really start to wail on Joe and Mike, and in the midst of things, they rob Joe and Mike of their wallets as well.

Eventually, Donnie offers to buy the group a round of drinks, which they accept, loudly declares the fight over, walks over, shakes the group’s hands, and crowns himself the victor.

Joe and Mike are very bruised and battered, and will be pissing blood for a while. Their wallets had a lot of money in them and Joe and Mike needed that money, as they are living paycheck-to-paycheck.  Donnie offers them nothing for their troubles other than to tell them he feels their pain and knows what they suffered through. He begins boasting how he started the fight, and how he ended it.

A month later, and their bruises and aches are starting to heal. Donnie calls them up, says he wants to go to another bar, maybe even start another fight.

Joe and Mike politely decline and put him on ignore.

No Republican will be Senate leader in 2020, but I don’t see Mitch having any leadership position.   He is supposed to be looking out for the interests of the Senate, not Trump, and he’s successfully getting the whole GOP associated with the shutdown.

Good.  We need pain.  And I don't mean a little bit.  Nothing is going to get through to us like pain will.  And a lot of it.  We decided "fuck it, let's touch the hot stove to own the libs!"  Now, we need to have our hand forced to stay there, and listen to the goddamned sizzle.  Hurt enough now?  How about now?  Seem like something you want to take care of?  Good.  Get on board with a plan to get rid of the fucking cancer in the White House.

We aren't going to have to suffer mere inconvenience.  People are going to have to die.  It's that bad.

I would like to see every working American change their paycheck withholding allowances to 10.   If we start sending less money to DC, it will send a message as well.  You can always catch up back on your withholding in the next month or so once the shutdown is over.

I think McConnell is fine with Trump hanging himself in the polls.  A Machiavellian move would be to let this go on until it’s politically advantageous to remove Trump.

There’s so much time on the clock for the GOP to recover before the next election.

There are 2+ years of receipts on every single Republican Congressman. Endless tweets/interviews/votes devoted to Trump. The Rs currently in power will never recover, as THEIR BASE is mostly Trumpkins.
