Seems to me like it would only be fitting if the whales just decided to stop swimming around Japan. They're supposed to be pretty intelligent mammals, right? Like primates of the sea? They'll figure it out. Then what? Your move, Tojo.

Definitely not good. Even the U.S. have seen a recent increase in whale poaching.

According to savethewhales.org, the following recordings shows some rare footage of the protected Tuscaloosa Land Whale (balaena alabamaensis), a species inhabiting North American rural as well as urban areas close to fast food subsidiaries, such as McDonald's, Waffle House and KFC.

"Midsummer 2018 in Anchorage, AK. Local Department of Fish and Game authorities determined that the hunter in this secretly filmed act of poaching baited his catch with five pounds of deep-fried butter balls and three gallons of sugar beet molasses, in order to simply hitch the commonly elusive cetacean species to his vehicle and tow the unsuspecting creature to its final destination: a plastic-covered couch in front of a 55-inch high-definition television device, scavenged in a Walmart Black Friday turmoil.

The TLW is hunted for the pungent aroma and occasional residue, stored in its monthly changed undergarments, which arouses concupiscence among connoisseurs worldwide."

I love Japan. I love visiting, I love their art and certain aspects of their culture,  Some of their food is incredible, I love how they diligently observe and admire nature, I think their view on caring for the elderly is wonderful and their porn is pretty good too...

but i thank God every day that I’m not Japanese.

The Japanese have no concept of sustainability.  They would happily overfish until there's not a single fish left in the ocean.  For a culture that loves seafood so much, it blows my mind that they don't understand that fisheries have to be managed or there will be nothing left at some point.

I will never understand how Asian cultures treat nature.  Like you said, the Japanese would eat every last fish in the sea if they could.  And the Chinese would wipe out countless other species in the pursuit of harder dicks.  They just don't seem to care about the repercussions of that.

yeah, i do agree with this wholeheartedly. there are things i miss about living there, and there are things i do not miss. this next quote is one reason why:

it's the strangest thing. in @Doc Reeves post, he rightly takes note of how the japanese diligently observe and admire nature. but the dichotomy between the culture's expectation of consumption versus proper stewardship are at odds with one another.

Norway and Iceland has never stopped commercial whaling.  Why no shade against them? At least the Japanese have a reason for their hatred against whale and dolphin.  They hold a grudge from that little incident at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.  Who do you think piloted the Enola Gay.  It was those fucking whales and dolphins

The enraptured smile on your mom's face tells me that she doesn't care either.

Whale Wars is easy to make fun of, but they were competent at the end. After Paul Watson ceded control to Peter Hammershitt and the crosseyed helicopter pilot left. They got a bit "Ragnar Danneskjold."

Norway, Iceland, Greenland and Canada all seem to claim historical and cultural ties to whaling.  Japan is just about commercial whaling.  I’m not excusing the other countries but only explaining it.

The Japanese have been hunting whales since the 1500s.  They have the same claims as everyone else.    I don't like whaling as I think they are fucking awesome creatures, but you can't just single out Japan and then let everyone else have a pass because they have historical ties to it.

You can when everyone else is western and white.

They don't really eat whale. Old people are nostalgic for its presence, but don't really prefer it. Younger people never eat it.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-35397749

An estimated 4600 tons was sitting around frozen in 2012 from the "science" expeditions because nobody wanted to eat it. Great idea to hunt more. Old people have the best ideas worldwide.

https://www.wired.com/2015/12/japanese-barely-eat-whale-whaling-big-deal/

Japan's problem will fix itself pretty soon.  Norway's problem is more ingrained and passed down.
