Oh, I’m a posting junky, no doubt about it but have you seen what has gone down in the last 24 hours?

The President called for the death penalty of his vocal critics in law enforcement

The Speaker of the House called for an staff/family intervention of the President

The Attorney Generals has been granted access to completely undermine the intelligence community and further erode the public’s trust.

The Justice Department charged Assange under the espionage act which threatens the freedom of the press.

Trump bailed out more farmers with Soviet style subsidies for a trade war he started.

And that’s before getting to the distractions of Iran, NK, abortion, war criminals, and posting doctored videos on twitter.

Also the Austrian government collapsed and the British Prime Minister resigned

Your right though, we should concern ourselves we these things.

I’ll see myself out.

there's over 7 billion of us.  we can handle some of the workload.  just take it easy for a while.

Corner Store Customers Saddened By Sight Of Frantic Trump Doing Scratch-Off Tickets Right On Counter

Spoiler

kmw0gkzpweqrvezslgs6.jpg

WASHINGTON—Watching as the president of the United States checked each of his pockets in search of enough change to keep playing, customers at a D.C. convenience store were reportedly saddened Friday to see Donald Trump frantically doing scratch-off tickets right there on the counter. “A lot of hard-up folks come in for the lotto, but this guy’s here at least a couple times a day—whenever he can scrape together the cash for another ticket, I guess,” said store clerk Draymond Finch, who looked on as the commander in chief ineffectually clawed at a scratch-off with a dirty fingernail before handing it back and asking Finch to tell him if he had won or not. “One time, I saw him win $8, and he was absolutely over the moon. Then he immediately spent his winnings on more tickets, all of which came up short. Honestly, this guy needs to pull himself together. Pretty soon, he’ll start asking my customers if they can spare a buck, and then I’ll have to shoo him out of here, just like I do every day.” At press time, sources confirmed President Trump had accused Finch of deliberately selling him losing tickets and was angrily demanding a refund.

He's not going to suspend elections in 2020, so we the people do still have an opportunity to stop him. But the GOP is going to cheat in every way they think they can even conceivably get away with. Voter suppression measures will be rampant. Russia has unfettered access to the voter rolls in swing states and the federal government is doing nothing to protect against that. Nothing is guaranteed.

The problem for Trump is that despite their best efforts, they couldn't stop from losing the House last year, and watching several Trump states flip.  For fuck's sake, a bisexual atheist beat a decorated combat pilot that Trump personally campaigned for in McCain's Senate seat.

The GOP has put everybody on high alert that they are going to do everything they can to subvert and suppress the votes - Florida and Georgia woke everybody up.  Wisconsin put everybody on alert that the Republicans will burn the place down on their way out if they can. If you are going to suppress the vote in a Presidential election, you need to be flying way under the radar in the midterms, not laying your cards on the table.  Instead, you are causing people who might not have voted to sit up straight and decide they need to vote.   You are causing people who might have blown off having their shit together, make sure their eligible and ready to vote.

Trump lost Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania, and probably Arizona, and that's BEFORE the trade war and tariffs truly kick in on American businesses and consumers.  This farming fiasco is already pissing off a lot of farmers and people who rely on them, and we haven't seen the worst of it.

Those three states put him at 258 electoral votes.   Even if he miraculously keeps Pennsylvania, that puts him at 278, but wait, Arizona drops him to 267.  And that's without Florida and Georgia, which Trump put into play.

And Hillary won't be running.

And all y’all keep saying “35% of the country supports him.” It’s in the high 40s when it comes time to pull the lever. Add in enough shenanigans and he might win again. That largely depends on the economy and luck.

Many of those people can't feed, clothe, and shelter themselves with warm thoughts of the FBI lovers being locked up.  They can't print out HER EMAILS and hand them to the bank in lieu of payments on the family farm or farming equipment or for mortgages.

well, jews are generally pretty smart, so this makes sense.  also lulz that biden is polling lower than "a generic democrat".

the right acts so confused when people try to explain to them that "jewish people" and "the state of israel" aren't exactly the same thing.

I know it's going out on a limb, but based on our Jewish friends, a couple of whom even have family in Israel, they are much more concerned about right-wing nutcases here in the US, than Israel being overran by Iran or Syria or whoever, or about where the US embassy is.  Kush being Jewish doesn't move the needle at all for them.  They are paying attention to Trump followers.

Absolutely.   Even on Israel, plenty of Jews (in America and in Israel) are upset about the direction that Netanyahu has taken the country.  In my own opinion, some of the "pro-Israel" positions taken by Trump in supporting Netanyahu have put Israel's future at greater risk, and I don't view them as pro-Israel at all.

More broadly, plenty of American Jews care about a lot more than just themselves.  Mainstream Jewish religion and secular culture is socially progressive by nature (which is the real reason "Jexodus" was never going to happen), and those values are expressed in many policy positions that have nothing to do with Israel, anti-semitism, or Jews.

If your posting patterns were based on how much shit is going down, seems like your posting yesterday would be a lot higher than your typical average of 45 a day.  And that's just Surly - you've mentioned many times about all the other places you read and post, and the twitter accounts you follow and respond to.

Don't get exasperated when we don't understand how you seemingly get by on no sleep and why you post so much on a singular non-sports topic, on a sports site that you have absolutely no normal links to.  None of us wake up at 2am because our phone is blowing up with rumors that this or that player is hurt or leaving the team.  Well maybe one or two of us.  You clearly don't have a regular job or a family that keeps you on a schedule that would match your posting patterns, so it's odd as shit to most of us.

At times I think you're somebody's autistic kid that decided to focus on politics instead of Pokemon, and if so, that's fine if that's what gets you through life.   Other times, you come across as a paid astroturfer and if you'd like me to expand upon that and why I think that, I can, but I have seen the inner-workings of astroturfing campaigns in 2008 and 2012 (places like Free Republic and the politic forums of various non-political sites were easy pickings), and I saw an early form of it when campaigning for W (think AOL-esque).

Other times, you come across as some trustfund/basement dweller/college kid majoring in poli-sci who feels his mission in life is to keep the rest of us informed and corrected.  If so, start working on building up an email subscription list - you're very thorough and widely read - you could easily be making a few thousand a month (or more).  I have a friend who does this on tech-related topics, and he's pulling down $5,000 a month for sending out a few emails a week (his hours probably closely match yours).   Convince a thousand people that your newsletter is worth $5 a month, and you're making a living while sitting around in your underwear.

Oh, in answer to your question, yes, we saw what has gone down in the last 24 hours.  And the last 24 months.  If he had the power you think he has, or at least that you think he believes he has, he should have/would have already been moving against his political enemies.  I mean his real political enemies.  Not the FBI lovers who can't impact him in any meaningful way going forward.  The time to move against those political enemies is right fucking now, before everything else is exposed, and not waiting until the Dems have a candidate that people can coalesce around.

Instead, he's melting down on twitter and putting stupid fucking placards on his podiums.

Their first function was to fight Comanches.

Which took balls of steel.  I have been meaning to ask @Hornius Emeritus about this, but over next to the 34th bridge crossing Shoal Creek, there is crude concrete bridge, which was apparently built circa 1850 - no surprise, but in the past 170 years it's lost wooden planks (you can still see where they were attached).  Anyways, back in 1850, that bridge was the extreme western edge of Austin, and it was there for troops/Rangers/etc. to cross the creek (which was a lot different back then - Seiders Springs, etc. were putting a lot more water into Shoal Creek).  When you crossed to the western side, there basically should have been a sign that said "Here be Comanches (and others)", as Comanches raided along Shoal Creek (everybody went there for fresh water).

You seem to think they vote their economic interests first and foremost. That's rarely actually the case. They vote to hurt the people they hate. There's probably at least fifty million Americans who would volunteer to live with their families in cardboard boxes cooking rats for dinner if a strongman would guarantee that the black guy in the next box over didn't even get a rat.

I can't recommend Empire of the Summer Moon strongly enough as a picture of the Comanches and Texans. The Rangers were amazingly courageous pursuing larger bands of Comanches after raids. The Comanches were at least a match for them until the Colt revolver evened the field.

It's a remarkable book.

When you've been exposed to this stuff, it's easy to notice, and it's not so much concern as just an awareness.   Well none of what happens here is reason enough to skip sleep either, and btw, if you're not employed, you could be making money off of posting.

Anyways, you ask us if we are aware of what is happening, as if we don't know, and you ignore the fact that we are posting on a active political forum on the internet.  That automatically makes us more aware of what is going on in Washington than probably 80% of this country, if not more.  And because it's a place like Surly instead of Free Republic or TexAgs or The_Donald or r/esist, we are seeing and discussing a very wide range of information compared to most people.  It's not an echo chamber, even if it may feel like it at times - we just happen to be more educated than most, so we tend to look down on a lot of Washington politics in general.  Many of us are willing to take a step back and look at things from the perspective of our manservants, and many of us are former conservatives/Republicans who reached our limit of bullshit.

Granted, Facebook and all, but I have a couple of hardcore Baptist relatives, and they post more on current events and the politics of Israel, than all of our Jewish friends combined.  Not even close.  If our Jewish friends are posting about Israel, it's because they are either going to visit, or just visited, or because of some family event (marriage, birth, etc).  They don't post "OH MY GOD HAMAS LAUNCHED A BUNCH OF ROCKETS AT SUCH-AND-SUCH LOCATION", unlike our hardcore Christian relatives.

In 2016, yes.  But there's no Hillary.

Hate is a mighty powerful thing, but when the 6-foot Ooompa Loompa is telling you the economy is the greatest it's ever been and how your non-existent 401k is up 40% (no 50%) just this year, and the bank is about to take your house or farm, and your kid is nagging you because you can't pay the internet bill or phone bill so they can play Fortnight, and your wife can't afford her makeup from Amazon, and your mother-in-law loses her job checking receipts at the door of the local Walmart and so she's moving in with you, all those false promises Dotard come up to the forefront of your mind when you open the front closet and the MAGA hat is staring at you from the shelf.

I don’t get paid to post.  I’m not working for anyone.  I’m really a refugee poster.  I watched my old forum get attacked and completely subverted during the 2016 election, the attack was so bad the forum itself turned against me because I was trying to fight it off.  I was the crazy troll, the Hillary shill, the Soros AstroTurf in their world.  I was ringing the alarm bells but no one would listen.  They still haven’t recovered.

I also witnessed the attack on Twitter because I was following several of the Russian IRA accounts before anyone knew they were Russian IRA accounts.   The shit they were doing might seem innocent to some but to me it was terrifying.

You ever wonder why this community hasn’t been overrun by Qanon tards and Trumpkins like the forums that compete with this one?  I wonder all the time.  I don’t know but I’d like to think I might be a part of the reason why.  I don’t think I’m important or special but I felt assaulted in 2016 and I don’t want it to happen again.  Trying to educate myself and paying it forward is how I’ve spent much of my time here.  Probably too much time.

i've said it a dozen times, but trump is about to find out what it's like to be the unlikable person on the ballot, regardless of who his opponent is.  he's so busy smelling his own farts and telling everyone how popular he is, he doesn't remember how close 2016 actually was, and how high hillary's negatives were (and still are kinda).

some people fall so far behind in the race, they actually think they're winning.

It may never happen but anyone dismissing the possibility that Trump would love to takeover the justice department and federal law enforcement to punish and imprison his “enemies” clearly is not paying attention or are naive or have a misplaced faith in our system.

This stuff is just from this week.

When told that treason carries the penalty of death and asked why he continues to accuse people of such, is he saying they should receive that punishment - HE LITERALLY NAMED NAMES.

He’s fired or run off anyone resembling an adult or with moderating influence. He’s places multiple “acting” secretaries over hugely important governmental agencies, people with no senate approval and no accountability. He’s created a chilling atmosphere in the FBI and CIA and other intelligence agencies such that there is fear of pursuing investigations that may upset the president.

No one in “the opposition” has been arrested YET but if you can’t understand why people are sounding the alarm about the ultimate outcome of this path.......well.

The time to start screaming about it isn’t when people start getting thrown into dark holes - it’s too late then.

The time is now.

Trump could always win because he was a wildcard and people disliked Hillary. All the pantsuit nation talk in the world wasn’t gonna change that. It’s why I so strongly supported the bern even though I don’t agree with at least half of what he advocates.

Trump can in theory arrest anyone. But he can’t try and convict anyone. Judges and juries get to convict. Judges set bail and make rulings on dismissals. Explain how he’s gonna change that?

If trump trumps up charges he will ultimately wind up looking like the complete fool that he is. Think of his stupid ass voter fraud commission.

John Roberts may be a conservative judge who I mostly disagree with but he’s not a partisan hack nor a fraud and he’s arguably the second most powerful person in the country right now. You people worrying about Ginsburg should save a little worry for him.

It should not be lost on his enemies that he has turned the weapon of investigation back on them. Pelosi shows her hand by saying the president just wants to be impeached and she is loath to play into his hands.

"Oh, so I want to be impeached? Well then, I'll do even more outlandish things b/c I'm pretty sure you're not going to impeach b/c of your political considerations."
