Donald Trump 2019

hg's reasons to impeach:

1. it'll be entertaining

2. trump thinks it'll help him, and i'd like to see that backfire

hg's reasons not to impeach:

1. running the clock out likely ensures d victory in 2020 (although i think it's safe either way)

2. trump wants to be impeached and i don't like when he gets what he wants

it's a tossup, so basically, popcorn.gif

1) I don't think anyone's scared. They're just trying to play the game by the shitty new rules that the GOP has set. I think they know that they'll beat Trump in 2020 barring a major mistake. If you're up 4 touchdowns in the 4th quarter, playing run run run punt isn't being scared. It's the right thing to do, even if terribly unfulfilling.

I think people are vastly underestimating Trump's re-election chances.  And if the nominee is Bernie (or Warren, for that matter), it'll be that much more difficult as it will mean waving the white flag on Midwest.  And if the nominee isn't Bernie, the Bernie Bros are going to do exactly what they did in 2016 and take their ball and go home.  I don't see all the different camps in the Democratic tent in 2020 unifying.

The Bernie Bros would have gotten over it enough to vote for anyone not named Hillary. I doubt they make the same mistake.

I still see it as 50/50 for Trump vs the field. SAD!

I think the problems are more with voter suppression, etc. than the Bernie Bros.  Are people in, for example, Georgia, where they're closing many polling places and making people in urban (read: minority) areas wait in line for hours to vote and taking names off the rolls, going to wait in line for hours to vote for a rep in a gerrymandered district, and a president from a party that caved to trumpism by not starting impeachment proceedings or standing up to this bullshit.

poll number inaccuracy blah blah obviously, but trump isn't 50-50 as long as his polling numbers (vs anyone) are in the low 40's.

not to mention his favorable/unfavorable has been operating at a neg 10 for months and months, and this is with a booming economy.  you can't win an election with those numbers, unless something really drastic happens on the other side.  and when i say something really drastic, i can't even think of a realistic hypothetical that would qualify.

Agreed. I don’t think it’s 50/50 because half the country would vote for trump. It’s because the gop has mastered cheating.

GOP cheating (in many forms) combined with an actual approval rating for Trump of close to or exceeding 50% (any polling showing Trump's approval/likely to vote for at around 40% is way low due to people lying - many people know enough not to be publicly honest about the fact that they are shitbags) make a Trump re-election a sure thing, no matter who else runs and/or is the D nominee, and no matter what happens between now and the election.

Maybe, but do you really think people are scared to say they’d vote for him over the phone or on an anonymous poll?

Trump tried to make 2018 about himself and he got his ass kicked. All things equal there’s no way half the country supports this shit still. GOP gonna GOP though...

His numbers may be in the 40s overall. But he just needs to not lose more than a couple of the states he "won" in 2016.  Whether that's by the people who claim not to support him voting for him because of the socialist communist democratic candidate (whoever it is--even if it's Biden they'll be labeled that way), voter suppression, taking people off the voter rolls, five hour lines to vote in Phoenix and Charlotte, Russian hacking of computer systems, purging voter rolls, and so on.  And it doesn't have to be by a lot, just a few votes in a few states.

Somewhat related question. Why do the primaries start with small less-diverse states such as Iowa, New Hampshire, etc. It is as if they get to decide the first cut among the candidates. In other words, the remaining candidates have passed their approval. If the primaries started with California, Texas, New York and Florida, for example, Bernie would have been way ahead of Hillary in 2016.

No, I do not think its an organized effort, nor do I think that people are scared, but it is human nature to not to admit to things that are highly embarrassing/unpopular.  The 40% is the group of morons, racists and other human garbage who is proud of being the shitbags that they are.   I believe that there is a significant portion of people who will answer a poll - whether anonymous or otherwise by saying they "disapprove of" or "will not for Trump again," but when it comes down to pulling the lever, we all know that they will vote R no matter what.  Shit, there a bunch of those obvious liars right here on this board, and this is a pretty small cross section of people in relation to the voting populace.

Plus, what exactly has been done to address or combat the Russian interference that helped get Trump elected in the first place?  Oh, exactly nothing?  That's right.  So I am just not seeing why anyone is expecting a different result this time.

Bernie wasn't going to do better with minorities if the primaries started in states with more minorities. At least starting with Iowa and New Hampshire he went 1-1. Start with California, Texas, New York, and Florida and he would've gone 0-4.

I’ve been saying for years that the primary season should be shortened to three months with a rotating order from election to election.

Ya wanna talk about privilege??

The voters of Iowa and New Hampshire and South Carolina can fuck off with their stranglehold of setting the narrative for every election. Democrat and Republican.

Just saw this on the news.  He looked positively awful to the point I didn't recognize him.  He has white tennis shoes on and in the side view, looked very fat and had his hair slicked back.  Curios if there's a video out there of this.

And yeah, Texas, California, New York, and Florida are not great examples to use in Bernie’s case.

The rust belt and Wisconsin, Oregon, Nevada maybe.

But I’m less worried about the ire of the Bernie Bros this time. They don’t have just one “enemy” to focus on this time like with Hillary. None of the options - even Biden - are going to carry the baggage that made her so easy to hate. I don’t think that the nominee will be a woman, and let’s face it, a very loud segment of the BB’s have issues with a woman candidate.

And frankly, this go around Bernie seems stale and uninspiring unless you’re already a devotee.

I actually think he’s going to seriously underperform in the early primaries.

The BB’s anger last time was bred from having their hopes dashed. I don’t think the same set of circumstances are going to happen this time.

And I fully expect leadership to put a dragon in charge of the convention that won’t allow the nonsense that happened last time.

There’s a reason people like AOC and others haven’t jumped in and endorsed Bernie yet.

Yeah, I saw it on the news a little bit ago. He took off his baseball cap. Looked like hell. Fitting for an appearance with Franklin Graham.

Trump looks like he’s on a day trip away from the assisted living facility.

And Franklin Graham looks like a twink who sleeps with older men and robs them while they sleep.

He’s the one who Michael Cohen helped out with the pool boy pictures, right?

Seriously. That’s how my grandpa dressed in his mid-90’s. Even the extra room in the pants for the depends. He’d never live through a second term. I have to tell myself that, at least.

Just noticed he’s wearing a hat and golf shoes. What a dipshit.

Hilary’s popularity was north of 60% when she was SOS. Then BenghaziFox News, Russian trolls and Rossian Bernie bros started work. They’ll get a late start but they’ll suck on the Dem frontrunners until people think bothsides are bad.

So we’ll overcome the unchecked foreign interference - which is actually encouraged by the party in power - this time around with a better candidate? Ok then.

Our government and country is fundamentally broken, has been hijacked by a criminal enterprise disguised as a political party, led by a President who is so far beyond unfit to lead that he can and does not only fleece and embarrass the country in spectacular fashion on a daily basis, but actually commits multiple felonies with no consequences whatsoever.

And people think that we’re all going to just show up at the ballot box and vote this guy out, and he’ll hand things over to the next person?  That the Rs will ever let that happen, ever?   This is like watching someone walk outside to see their car in the driveway with the engine engulfed in flames, shrugging their shoulders and going back inside to bed, and then going out the next morning and expecting it to start (analogy not directed at you hg).

Shit floats, but he's dumb as a rock and those sink. I still lean toward float.
