I don't intend to suggest that Dems can succeed with a permanent 40% lockstep Trumpist opposition.    The discussion we've been having is over how to break Trumpism so there isn't a permanent 40% lockstep Trumpist opposition.

I think the way we achieve that is by a strong, progressive, and positive Dem party that doesn't try to convert the deplorables.  I think Trumpism feeds off of Dem weakness and lib tears and will wither and die if the Dems actually get some major wins under their belt, like real universal health care, affordable college, and some of the other major policies being proposed right now on the Dem side.  The way we bring out the good in Trump voters isn't by indulging them, but by inspiring them through the example of the alternative we present.  And the good GOPers can take back control of their party and do their own work to fix the problem in their house to compete with what we are doing.

By contrast, the way we keep Trumpism is by normalizing it as a reasonable political perspective that is open to reasonable discussion.    Bend over backwards to try to woo them to a moderate Dem - former GOP uniparty that doesn't really stand for much beyond not being assholes like Trump, which will just present as weakness.   Try to reason with cultists who think reality is fake news and that Hannity defines reality.   That will enshrine Trumpism within the GOP for years to come.  And the efforts to woo déplorables will fracture the Dem party by alienating progressives.  We should cater to the good, not the bad.

In my opinion.  I could be wrong.  I have no special expertise.  But it's the vision I'll be pushing for unless I'm persuaded otherwise.

There is no fixing the GOP. At a certain point you go down a path where you are who you are and nothing changes that. Those sons a bitches took the wrong fork in the road the last 40 years and they do not get a do over.

I do not know what the next major party will be, but it won't be those mouth-breathing racist assholes.

You are not going to save this as long as Fox, Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin etc are pushing lies and victimhood 24/7. Their listeners and viewers have been told for 30 years that the Democrats are crooked and getting away with murder. They honestly believe that the Dems and mainstream media have run rampant over the GOP for decades and they view Trump as their revenge. Finally, someone is fighting back for them. They will support him to the grave because he stood up to the libs. It doesn't matter what he does. They'll excuse it as long as he attacks their enemy.

If you are talking to someone that mainlines right wing media, whatever amount of time you spend trying to counter it will be dwarfed by the countless hours of indoctrination that preceded you and will come after your conversation. It sucks, but it's the reality. You might reach some of them, but not anyone that choses that poison willingly.

I didn’t buy into people saying that Trump is mentally ill, other than his raging narcissism. But after the last few days and him having Ivanka by his side the whole time, I’m starting to think these people are onto something with the dementia theories. He’s never been smart or well spoken but now, more then ever, he’s just saying random words. He can’t put coherent sentences together.

Segura is not funnier than Mulaney.  Never saw the two of them mentioned together, but John is funnier.

there are more red states than blue states which is an issue with the senate.

it's also an issue with the electoral math.

i can't imagine a republican winning the popular vote for president anytime soon.  even trump supporters know the electoral college is the only thing giving them a chance.

Are there polls that take into account the  EC and not rely solely on the popular vote?

Our President also cleaned up Washington DC of homeless people so foreign dignitaries wouldn't have to see them.  Also, he makes mention of the federal government getting involved in cleaning this up.  Gee, let me guess.  "Camps".

Um, there is definitely graffiti in Japan. There are also junkies. And a ton of suicides.

The above is nonsense, but par for the course for our dumbass president.

We're doing things. Important things as you know. Cootie shots for all law enforcement. Police were begging for cootie shots, but Obama said no. He said no to them. So we did. You know, cooties were under control. Anyway, we're seeing that all policemen and police women. Men and women are getting cootie shots. They're so glad that someone in the White House is looking after them now. Very important.

For example, the ACA was a major win, and all it did was piss off and rally the opposition.  A little bit of negotiation, even when a side has control, goes a long way.

But she’ll still end up voting for him over that damned socialist (name). “Reluctantly,” of course. Guaranteed.

Probably. But she doesn’t care about the labels, and she actually likes Biden (old on old crush = vomit). She misses Obama’s presidency and believes he is a good man. So there is a chance.

Absolutely brutal takedown of Ivanka in the Guardian:

Quote

The handbag entrepreneur was snubbed by world leaders, but it doesn’t matter – she is still the perfect product placement for brand Trump.

We have all been there, haven't we? Standing at the edge of a conversation, pretty in pink, perhaps, hoping to be taken seriously but side-eyed. As most of us have some degree of self-consciousness, we hope the world doesn’t see this happening. But, like her father, idiot princess Ivanka Trump doesn’t really do embarrassment, so the fact everyone saw the handbag entrepreneur being snubbed by world leaders at the G20 doesn’t really matter. She does sleeves. She does bows. And it was her, not Melania (who has again gone awol), who walked into North Korea with her father. “Surreal”, she said. Indeed – although the transgressive, poetic power of surrealism is long gone. Surrealism can only disrupt the rational, and we are way past that.

Ivanka, the daughter as wife substitute, travels the world talking about the empowerment of women. I think this means earrings. That her fembot ways enable her father to embolden those who will strip women of their rights is disarming, but not new. Thuggish men have always used women to soften their images. Asma al-Assad, anyone? What Ivanka does for the Trump regime is branding. Product placement. She is both product and placement and no one knows quite how to deal with it. World leaders may look awkward when she is placed in the middle of photographs, but they are complicit in allowing this to happen.

Indeed, many of them understand only too well how all this works. Narendra Modi, Vladimir Putin and the Saudis especially.

Not sure which lie you are referring to in particular.  My point is that the ACA was passed without any republican support (final version had not a single republican house rep or senator voting in favor of it, if I remember correctly) and it has remained very unpopular with conservatives to this day.  The reason I mentioned it was to challenge the point made by MH that passing legislation is the way to ultimately change minds.

that one, right there.  there was a shit ton of negotiation, which went exactly no where.  so, no, it doesn't go a long way.

That was intended as a comment on the general point I was making.  I do think that it is true, as far as proverbs go.

So you think Trump supporters have legitimate positions (except when they don't and are really driven by personality) and that Democrats should negotiate with Republicans (like they tried to do with ACA and were rebuffed). Have you tried approaching Pelosi with your wisdom and proverbs?

It's amazing how much he loves the sound of his own voice. He keeps stringing words together just to hear them. He's like an alcoholic that can't stop at 2 or 3. He has to go full keg stand every fucking time. He can't help himself. It's sad.

He literally knows nothing. That's why he goes on and on with his gibberish. Because he knows nothing about the subject so he figures if he talks long enough he'll sound like he knows what he's talking about. Just wow.

So the dirty piss-soaked streets started 2-3 years ago? I have to wonder how, in his mind, he makes sense of this starting with his presidency. Libs ruining our cities to undermine MAGA?

I'm in NYC this week. It's dirty as hell and smells but it's still the greatest city in the world.

One time Obama made a joke about Trump and it hurt his feelings and that's really all there is to all of this.

Trump re-election campaign raised $50 million in Q2.

A 37 year old gay mayor of South Bend, Indiana raised half that amount.

Wait until the fundraising is consolidated. The Democratic nominee will likely have close to $2 billion at his/her disposal.

Trust me, I know.  Just laughing at the "Democrats have to catch up to this fundraising juggernaut!" hottakes on Twitter.

The combined field of Democrats will significantly outraise Trump in Q2.  $54 million < Pete's $24.8m + Biden's ~$20 million + Harris, Warren and Bernie will all be in the mid-to-high teens (if not more).

Agree.

The GOP created a hate engine that created a monster that they thought they could control. It worked for awhile. GOPs ran on hate and then ruled on greed. Well, a true demagogue comes onto the scene and seizes their monster.

The monster is the problem. This demagogue is only the first one. He will likely be followed by more adept demagogues.

Then the real fun begins.

138 million votes in the 2016 election. A 1% increase destroys the difference in the electoral vote when targeted the right way. Like if someone provided the right target list to the Russians.

I suppose it depends on how many people viewed those retweets. What if each troll account had an average of 100 followers? That's targeting 2.5 million people.

It’s important to remember what the IRA troll accounts were pushing.  The ones I was following were pumping out some of the most racist and xenophobic messages I’ve ever seen on twitter.  I ended up unfollowing Pamela Moore before the election because her stuff was so offensive/disturbing/misleading.

This is what her profile page looked like in 2016:

This was a Kremlin troll account.

And we need to embrace the only people who are actually interested in fighting back: The decentralized group of randoms and misfits who understand what it's like to be the first ones under the boot of angry white boys.
