That doesn't make sense. They're already voting for Trump. They're already hearing anti-Hillary commentary on a regular basis. But if Hillary would just shut up, maybe they'd vote Dem in 2020? I don't think so.

We're living in very complicated times right now, WTB. It's not about changing votes, it's about turnout. Fair or not, Hillary is an extremely toxic figure. Even to Democrats.

Put it this way, would any D candidate even want a Hillary endorsement? It's probably not worth all the baggage that comes with it.

That was then...I'm thinking a lot of Dems recognize the error of their ways.

we (as a country) need to stop referring to this as "the transcript".

it was a 5 page summary of a 30 minute conversation.  when we call it "the transcript", we gloss over the fact that there is an actual transcript, locked away in a server where it shouldn't be.  it needs to constantly be pointed out that this isn't the transcript, because people will forget how big of a deal the code-word server situation is.

that server also contains other calls that were locked away for political reasons, not national security concerns.  putin is already pushing back on conversations in there.  this is a big deal, and needs to stay in the news.

1000 x ^This.

I'm not seeing it. Hillary has been mostly silent throughout the Trump presidency and in all likelihood that will continue. She and Chelsea are promoting a book right now so there will probably be some more quotes coming out during this little promotional window that will be over by Thanksgiving. But it's not going to make any difference in the election.

Also, Hillary is free to endorse a candidate. Anyone who would let Hillary's endorsement of any person or thing affect their opinion of that person or thing was already going to vote for Trump anyway. It just doesn't matter.

Why give the other side a talking point?   The transcript itself was bad enough.

You make it out like there is some mass of dumb voter who is going to make their mind up based on the Committee hearings.  The only people paying attention are people who all likely read the transcript already.   You are 100% right Trump will bitch no matter what..  What will motivate his base is stupid shit like ginning up the transcript when you don't need to.   The appearance of objectivity/reasonableness matters IMHO and is more important than trying to explain things to dumb voters.

There was always going to be a talking point. Much like this one, it would also be a completely fabricated one. Stop worrying about what the fraudsters are going to say in response. Call them fraudsters directly and plainly. That is what Schiff did. He was right to do it. I swear to god, this is why the democrats keep getting own-goaled. They give credence to the absurd talking points, you know, for the appearance of objectivity and fairness, rather than calling out the bullshit as bullshit. Stop it. It isn't a transcript. Schiff wasn't wrong in ANY sense. Stop it.

I'm a Democrat. Fuck Hillary Clinton. She ran a shitty campaign. She shouldn't get any credit from Ds for recognizing Trump was a comic book villain in 2016. We all knew it. She basically stopped campaigning and played not to lose.

I agree 100% with this, but I also assume you still voted for her in 2016 and will vote D in 2020, so you're not who I'm talking about.

I'm talking about the D's who voted for Trump, or not at all...I'm guessing they'll be back in the fold come November 2020.

LOL. Go take a look at Hunter Biden's resume, not saying his Dad's connections didn't help him out, but he's got a pretty good CV, regardless who his daddy is.

Eric Trump has never, for one day, not worked for his Dad. And his "foundation" had to be shut down after it was discovered it was funneling millions of dollars to his daddy by overpaying Trump properties to "host" charity events there.

The grift does not fall far from the tree.

I'd feel more confident that they're back in the fold come November 2020 with Hillary completely sidelined. We have plenty of better candidates running now who don't need her help in any way.

Hillary's political story has been written. She'll never rebound from the 2016 election. Time to move on.

Yes, with tribal politics taking over the republican party everyone is already on a side. No one will change sides from this point forward. If you've rode this far with the republican criminal syndicate you aren't backing off no matter what other criminal acts they commit. If you're repulsed by republican criminality you aren't voting for them no matter what the democrats do.

It's all about getting every single American possible who is disgusted by the criminal in charge to turn out and vote.

it's like including a shitty relief pitcher on a postseason roster.  you probably won't need to use him, and he probably won't get into an important game, but why in the world would you even take that chance?

This.  It's the only fight.  There's no war of ideas anymore.  That phase is over.

Now, it's just about bodies at the polls.

Christ, you can't understand the difference between handing them a talking point that actually has some validity versus them gaslighting the American people about utter bullshit that they make up.  Stop with the "own goal" lunacy -- this WAS an own goal by Shiff.

Does it rank up there with even the mildest Trump missteps?  No, it doesn't.  But it's still a misstep, and one that could have been completely avoided.  Nobody's pearl-clutching here.  You could let it die but you won't, and then you point fingers and say "see, this is why we lose elections!".  No, it isn't.

Point made.  I think fair minded people can disagree, Jimmy.  Can we move on now?

It's not a misstep. At all. You seriously want Dems to lay back and play it safe in the face of calls for retaliation and insurrection? You want to leave open the vacuum in which they will pump their gaslighting talking points instead of strapping in for the street fight to come? Great. You're not a wartime consigliere, Tom. Go take a seat over there and let those with the stomach for this fight take the lead.

I'm sorry, what? I could let what die? What the fuck are you babbling about. There is nothing legitimate or valid about this complaint. It is bullshit and I will call it bullshit. Stop being a fucking pussy.

Schiff?  We're still talking Adam Schiff?  Schiff?  Not the President openly admitting to attacking our elections or calling for a civil war.  Not accusing a duly elected Member of Congress of treason.  We're talking Schiff.  Schiff.

There is no validity to this.   Schiff said he was going to talk about the essence of what Trump was saying, and then he did just that.  That some very stupid people don't understand rhetorical devices doesn't make their misunderstanding valid.

Well, I never knew I was very stupid, but thanks for clearing that up.

NO I don't want Dems to play it safe.  I've been advocating the exact opposite for years now.  That doesn't mean they have to go for broke in every setting.

Fuck it, I'm done.

The fact that this is even a minuscule issue after almost 3 years of Trump committing one impeachable offense after another is the biggest indictment of the American public and why we're proper fucked regardless of what happens in 2020.

I hate to break it to y'all, but Pandora ain't going back in the box.

I wasn't talking about you.   Clearly everyone here understands what Schiff was doing.   You don't think Schiff was actually trying to fabricate quotes by Trump and present them as really appearing in the transcript, right?    The issue we all recognize is that it's easily prone to misrepresentation by Trump to stupid people.  Some non-stupid people, including you, seem to think that it was a mistake to provide that ammunition, others like me that it wasn't for various reasons, stupid people be damned.   And I think both takes are reasonable.

My basic counter would be that stupid people get to vote, too.  The obvious counterargument to that would be that most of them voted in 2016, so there's little damage to be done by revving them up.

Ultimately, I'm concerned that the 2016 election results hinged on small differences in large numbers, roughly 80,000 out of 130,000,000 votes.  Small swings matter.

Dude, Trump is the MASTER of taking credit for shit that was already happening.

The latest barrage of tweets (what I call the "jobs" tweets) are most likely staff. Trump is swearing in the Secretary of Labor and meeting with the Secretary of State this afternoon (right now, actually). The paranoid tweets are attributed to him via factbase. I'm guessing his staff is attempting to keep a steady stream of tweeting "jobs" tweets to get the rest of his diatribes pushed down the timeline and remind supporters that Democrats want to take all their toys away cuz 'socialism'.
