We used to be a laughing stock. Not anymore!

-Every GOP for the last 25 years. Yea, everybody thought we were great with W and now Trump.

I still think a large part of where we are comes from the bastardized idea of American Exceptionalism.

"American Exceptionalism" is idiocy.  It's nothing but a shield against any introspection or improvement.

It's as if I practiced "Brisket Physical Perfectionism" -- I'm GORGEOUS.  There's not a SINGLE THING ABOUT ME THAT'S NOT THE MOST PERFECT EVER.  And if you criticize me, you're just  a hater, and you should go back where you came from or something.*

* All of which shields Brisket from trying to lose 50 lbs, dressing better, finally getting a decent haircut, realizing he's getting older so he ought to take care of his skin, too, etc.  Leaving Brisket to be the plain-looking fella that he ACTUALLY is.  And what's worse, it's a recipe for Brisket to get even uglier as time goes by.

America is just getting shittier, and it's in no small part because people who insist that we're fucking perfect, so how dare we actually look critically at ourselves to see how we can improve?

I completely agree.

We think that we are always liberating Paris from the Nazis no matter who we're invading. In our naive view of a world comprised of good guys and bad guys, we're never the bad guys at the start. It takes a few photos of slaughtered villagers, blown-up children, or drone-attacked weddings before any of us even get the idea.

But we don't mean to kill civilians! The dead and their survivors don't care. They don't care because it doesn't matter.

Yep.  We will never reach perfection and once we accept that, we should continue to strive toward it regardless.  American Exceptionalism is the opposite of that.

I like how the president saw a woman on his tv this morning that he doesn't like, so he started calling her "Psycho". And this isn't even a story.

And that's a good thing. The sooner the media stops covering every goddamn tweet from Trump, the better.

Well, when a mentally ill person starts imagining things, it's generally best to just nod your head and try and change the topic.

Quote

President Trump will be ineligible for California’s primary ballot next year unless he discloses his tax returns under a state law that immediately took effect Tuesday, an unprecedented mandate that is almost certain to spark a high-profile court fight and might encourage other states to adopt their own unconventional rules for presidential candidates.

The hell of it is....we at least used to TRY.

My Lai was a scandal.  Obama took (justified criticism) for his use of drone attacks.  And, goddamit, we ARE the country that helped liberate Paris and lead the Berlin Airlift.

But now.....child separation and kid cages with no basis sanitation isn't a scandal....it's fucking CELEBRATED.  It's "making America great again!"  Our commander in chief casually says he could kill 10 million people, but through his benificence (for today, at least), he chooses not to.  Our leadership is running backwards to old-fashioned racism and white supremacy as fast as it can.  Etc. etc.

The world is an evolving story.  The story is complex, and every actor's actions are often ambiguous (including ours, historically).  But here, there is no doubt - in this particular chapter, we are the villain.  We are the USA, and we ARE the bad guy.

What can I say? You're absolutely right. I harp on our foreign policy and war policy reflecting the actions of an insecure teenage boy. We got to look tough. We must sneer as vicariously wield the sledgehammer of force.

The people who carry out our wars come back deeply troubled by what they've seen and been ordered to do. How strange it must be for them to encounter jock sniffers thanking them for their service and reverently calling them badasses.

Spoken or unspoken, they must think, you don't even know.

That's because we don't want to know that it's not like our fantasy. Boners were popping all across this land when the tanks rolled into Iraq. Sickos.

Meh, he wasn't going to win that state anyway is how I look at it.

It's terrible precedent, and if they do it, every state should.  And frankly, every serious candidate for the office of President should reveal as much about their finances as possible.  But all this will do is give the President something to point to out to the rest of the country that the socialists want him out of the picture.  It's just another grievance he will use as a tool.

The new law (assuming it's not struck by the courts) would only keep trump off the primary ballot.  It wouldn't stop anything with the general election.

i'm going to pivot slightly away from the debate on whether trump was or wasn't an actual first responder - it's a close call.
so last night i was watching some parks and rec reruns, and got to the season where leslie is running for city council against bobby newport (paul rudd).  and during the debate, as his "ace-in-the-hole strategy", newport threatened that if he lost the election, that his father said they would be moving their candy company to mexico, and a bunch of people would lose their jobs, and the economy in pawnee would be destroyed.
so seeing as how this topic has come up more and more lately (this was just from a quick google search) - it seems that trump is definitely taking a page out of the newport playbook.
https://www.businessinsider.com/trump-warns-market-crash-if-not-re-elected-2020-trade-war-wages-on-2019-6
so then i started thinking, who's the better candidate, newport or trump - there are a lot of similarities.
i guess i was late to the party on this conversation...

https://www.reddit.com/r/PandR/comments/7hwhxu/donald_trump_is_literally_johnny_newports_campaign/
and there are tons more.
it's almost as if parks and rec was spoofing trump's campaign.  except that debate episode aired in april of 2012.  maybe trump is copying newport?
at least newport lost.
ok, carry on...

Someone mentioned that Michael Scott making the “won’t fall too far” comment would be a stretch. It was a good point, but Trump lacks the likability and inherently good nature (despite the childishness and pettiness and hatred of Toby) that made you root for Scott even if he was an idiot and did cringeworthy things. Newport/Rudd has that. Even David Brent is too likable to be properly compared to Trump.

Yep.  Stupid reactionary law.  And it will be struck down.

Don't care. As long as it drags on for months, results in a huge court fight, and continues to illuminate the fact that, after saying multiple times that he WOULD release his tax statements, he has not, then it's a strategic victory.  More people will have to ask themselves what he's hiding.

I don't like legislation as political tool.  It's the wrong angle.

That said, I'm all for the National Popular Vote compact, and they're getting close to it being a reality.  Probably won't happen in time for November 2020, but I like its chances overall.

Yeah, you're giving America too much credit.

Months of "LIBERALS ATTACKING THE CONSTITUTION" headlines on Fox News will stick with the general public more than we expect.  Then Alabama will attempt to leave the 2024 Democratic nominee off of the ballot because they only attended 51 church services in 2022 and Texas will do the same after the nominee refuses to give Netanyahu their left kidney and suddenly it will become apparent how shortsighted this political stunt really was.

When the nation's "House of Prayer for All People" - which has tried to remain fairly apolitical amidst taking flak from the left for hosting the traditional Inauguration Day presidential prayer service for Trump, from the right for Pride Month events and an interfaith Muslim prayer service, and everything inbetween - issues a statement decrying the president's remarks and general decency, you know it's a weighty statement.

Quote

As faith leaders who serve at Washington National Cathedral ¬– the sacred space where America gathers at moments of national significance – we feel compelled to ask: After two years of President Trump’s words and actions, when will Americans have enough?

... We have come to accept a level of insult and abuse in political discourse that violates each person’s sacred identity as a child of God. We have come to accept as normal a steady stream of language and accusations coming from the highest office in the land that plays to racist elements in society.

That's because Trump doesn't give a shit about anyone but Trump.  Hitler was the biggest piece of shit of all time, but in his piece of shit mind he thought he was doing something for Germany not himself.  Trump doesn't give a shit about America or Americans.  He just wants adoring fans.  Hitler was certainly more dangerous.  Trump is a fucking idiot, but it is really the fact that he only cares about himself that saves us.  He could be dangerous if he actually cared about an ideology.

Racists love him so he loves them back.  Its as simple as that.

tl,dr:

There’s a real cultural divide between the nation’s urban centers and the vast fly-over country.  I see it up close and personal every time I visit my family in the midwest. These folks wear flag-based attire year round.  They play bunko.  They buy Precious Moments figurines without ironic intent.  They vacation in Branson. They eat at Golden Corral, for Christ’s sake.  And they fucking love them some Trump.

Trump has somehow branded himself as the Messiah of the Midwest.  He’s more of a bumpkin trend than a thought leader.  But who needs quality when you’ve got rabid brand loyalty?

It’s fucking sad, and those visits always leave me hopeless for our country.  Bannon was right. At this moment, politics follows culture.  And Trump worship is a badge of cultural orthodoxy in the American Midwest.
