There’s a real cultural divide between the nation’s urban centers and the vast fly-over country.  I see it up close and personal every time I visit my family in the midwest. These folks wear flag-based attire year round.  They play bunko.  They buy Precious Moments figurines without ironic intent.  They vacation in Branson. They eat at Golden Corral, for Christ’s sake.  And they fucking love them some Trump.

Toss in a Beanie Baby collection, and a collection of plates hanging in the kitchen that commemorates John Wayne movies, and you've nailed some of my relatives.

Trump has somehow branded himself as the Messiah of the Midwest.  He’s more of a bumpkin trend than a thought leader.  But who needs quality when you’ve got rabid brand loyalty?

It’s fucking sad, and those visits always leave me hopeless for our country.  Bannon was right. At this moment, politics follows culture.  And Trump worship is a badge of cultural orthodoxy in the American Midwest.

Yeah, I don't think most Americans know how big that divide is...I certainly didn't before moving to rural Western Kentucky earlier this year while waiting for my Czech visa.

My town's too small for a Golden Corral, so they have to settle for a Ponderosa Steakhouse, which I assume is similar although I haven't been.

To give you a taste of the attitudes around here, check out the GOP adds for the Governor's race...it's like bizzarro world.

Here's one of the negative adds...as you watch, remember this are supposed to be NEGATIVE

With a bit of Jerry Lee Lewis thrown in.  At least Trump married outside of his family though.

I don't know your family, but in my view, if someone tolerates Trump's clear racism, then it probably speaks for them a little more than they might want to admit.

Yeah, you don’t know my family.  And I’m tired of the “if you support Trump, you are a racist!” bullshit.  It’s a flawed syllogism, and it’s counterproductive.

Now are Trump supporters capable of breathtaking acts of cognitive dissonance?  Absolutely.  But they don’t think they’re racist, in the sense that they don’t dislike non-whites or view whites as superior.  Which makes sense, because the vast majority of Trump supporters are white and are not superior to anyone.  I honestly think many of them see Trump’s rants in the same personal terms he does.

I feel the need to share the people/"family" that pop up on Facebook. This thread spun from a post from "Harold" who was going on about how Mueller came off as the real criminal in his testimony. I had responded with the following and the picture below of the two Trump fans wearing the "rather be Russian than Democrat shirt"

Take away from today after once again confirming that the Russians deliberately acted to influence the 2016 election. Trumps 40% republican base in a nutshell.

A response from someone I don't know, not "friends" with on FB but who I believe to possibly be a third removed cousin. She's probably in her late 60's and a Trump fan. We'll call her Blondie.

that comment about trumps base is racist.... So are you trying to silence those people that do not believe like .... That is called bulling ... So please talks truths, facts, and stop with the racist remarks.....

My response and by the way Harold is also a huge Trump supporter and his main response to all my push back has to do with Soros looking to control the world.

Bless your heart Blondie. I didn't yell "send them back". I merely posted a photo of two strapping men proudly pronouncing their loyalty to the "Party". I'm sorry if it struck a nerve with you. If you've been following my responses to Harold's posts you'll probably recognize that almost all of my posts are backed by some facts not some random conspiracies involving George Sorros/The Clinton's and the Rand Corporation, in conjunction with the Saucer People who are forcing our country to elect socialist zombies.....I take it that you're not one of the loyal supporters who blindly parrots Trumps message and is willing to hold him accountable.

Her response. Now my name is Brian, I've met a lot of you along the way through tailgates, happy hours and making some custom made logos. I believe Blondie has a hard time with spelling/grammar.

bless your heart brain...!!!!no facts... Just old statements made by CNN...Soros is a a Nazi served as a Nazi under hitler in Germany... And was raised as a part of "Hitler child regiment".... History has that recorded.... He is evil two countries have bared him entrance....that is also documented.... So don't talk to me about Soros....yes I do believe he is apart of the "new" Democratic Party .....His statment was to control the US... But , you are obviously brain washed by the demo swamp life ....!! And... You are not only a bully, a racist, but a sarcastic one at that

My response and I proceeded to post six articles disproving the Soros/Nazi connection from Google (that will come into play later). I also ask her to provide evidence that Soros has been banned from two countries as I couldn't find it.

Tap the brakes Blondie I'll be happy to talk facts any time you'd like. Let me know the topic of choice. I've been talking facts on Harold's posts for the last six months.

I will admit I didn't know the history with Soros, I'll have to look into it.

I do love the fact that everyone thinks I'm a democrat because I question Trump and his motives. I find it even more amazing that everyone automatically goes straight to the mud. Maybe you can elaborate on why you believe I'm being a racist and bully? I'll be happy to listen to your argument.

Blondie's response

Hungry and Putin, Russia.....all I said is true....and it is documented...evil man!!!!

I respond with

Can you reference anything. I mean I just pulled six websites from a Google search. Are you saying Soros is bared from Russia and Hungry? I've never researched or spent any time on Soros before this. You seem to be well versed. What facts can you share? question regarding racism. Do you believe the President was using racist remarks when he called out the "Squad" and said they should go back to where they were from and they couldn't leave fast enough?

Blondie's response

read study.... I stand by what I said.... Did you know Adam Schiff is married into the Soros family.... Think about that.... No .....that is not a racist... And I do personally feel if you hate Americans , if you hate Jews, if you hate cops if you hate boarder patrol, if you hate capitalism ....,then you should leave and find what you love somewhere else .... We have and had men and women die for our freedoms ....,

My response and I reference the KKK Billboard and it's message.

Then what exactly did you find racist with my picture? you're ok with this I assume "love it or leave it" that's basically Trump's message. He even has his supporters chanting it at his rallies. Perfectly ok with you?

Blondie's response

.....The klan was started and members were all democrats .... It appears to me.... That democrats coined the phraseSo are you Ok with this...!!!! Please get really....like always when you have nothing else to say you resort to this stuff .... Read you history the democrats did not want to free slaves ... And democrats were the original and are the klan..... Next..!!

I proceed to disavow both messages (calling the Squad to go back to their home country and the billboard) then outline the history of the KKK and it's not what she's been taught. She responds. Note the Google is wrong information.

no my statement is true and correct... You can justify it all you want but truth is truth.... Oh by y
The way I basis nothing on what is on FB posts.... I base everything on what I have studied for years..... So please don't search google for information because it is probably only half correct....I stand by my statement because it is documented and true....

I respond with the following and finally Harold feels he needs to jump in.

That's great. I stand by my post as well. I think that the message Trump is portraying has a racist undertone, primarily based on the history of its usage with the KKK. I deplore both the message the Klan had/has and the same message Trump is spewing. The President is using his Office to insite hate on a broad level. It's fine you don't see this, though I do find it a little odd you don't see the parallel.

Harold responds, basically calling me the racist for bringing the topic up.

those telling those to leave and go home or to where they came from if they don’t like America is not being a racist, it is seen as a patriot....Those spewing a racial overtone to this message are actually the real racist spewing racial divide, a left wing Marxist strategy; Just saying!!!!

I respond and it goes downhill from there.

I expected no less from you. I'll ask you the same question. Do you find the KKK billboard to be racist in its message? question, as a member of "Patriots for Trump" where do you stand on the founding principals our nation was built upon? I really like the one that covers "All Men Are Created Equal".........not "All Men Are Created Equal, but if we feel you don't meet our standards for how we want you to speak, act and feel we reserve the right to tell you to get out of Dodge.....even if you are an American citizen" I know it's a little wordy, I'm sure the patriots will come up with a condensed rally cry to express themselves. Individual Liberty:

Each person is born with freedom from arbitrary or unjustified restraint

Federalism:

In this system of dual sovereignty, the people delegate certain powers to the national government, while the states and the people retain all other powers.

Limited Government:

The national government has only those powers granted in the Constitution. If a power is not listed, the national government is assumed not to have it.

Representative Government:

A republican system in which the people elect representatives to represent their interests as they make and carry out laws.

Private Property:

Individuals have the right to obtain and control possessions, as well as the fruits of their own labor.

“All Men Are Created Equal”:

There is no natural class of rulers among people, and everyone is born with the same unalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

Separation of Powers/Checks and Balances:

The Constitution establishes a system of distinct powers to prevent an accumulation of power in one branch of government and to ensure that each branch can stop the others from growing too powerful.

Followed by me again.

Also disclaimer, I pulled that list from the internet, so it might only be half true. I'll see if I can pull out one of my old civic text books and see if it jibes with what I posted. I'm pretty sure it will. I can only hope Soros and his minions haven't swapped out my old books for their world vision textbook rewriting history.

Followed by Harold

the principle of all men are created equal if said, all men including have the freedom of thought and speech, but those speaking against the American constitution are not protected from those expressing the same exercise or right. That being said, being told to go home if not liking the systems of America is not racist because we’re not behaving with racial intent we are discussing the systems of governing; The racial descriptions here are a typical left wing strategy of weaponized racial divide strategy, an over used week argument....on the other side of the quote the KKK used the quote for borrowed meaning because they used it in a discussion of racial divide not in the principles of governing, President Trump used the quote in a discussion of governing....Its not a racial implied quote until you bring in the quote into a racial discussion, being a patriot is not being a racist....the meaning of a statement is based on the subject and spirit of the conversation not one sentence or phrase means the same in every scenario of speech....In the case of President Trump I have not got the impression he is a racist, if anything he wears a lot hats governing and because of his background coming from New York he for sure has the abrasive personality.... I would also add a lot of personality behavior red neck types associate with that mentality, I for one also consider myself a little blue collar red neck.....

My response

so to be clear, same phrase two different meanings? Ok, it's Trump's message. I disagree with it, I believe it has a racial undertone. Now in regards to the discussion of governing, you're on board with departing U.S. citizens based on what the President views as an opinion of how someone should act or say? What happened to your freedom of speech stance? I think that's an even worse stance to be honest. Again, I'm not popping up on your thread to change your vote, I just think we as a nation deserve a better republican leader. (edited to add that it's ok to sometimes question Trump's motives and actions)

Blondie needed to get back into the discussion.

really .... Why the bullying remark.... If you love and walk with Soros.... You are a sad closed minded human .... He is evil ....and have nothing but someone else's thoughts in your head....Soros is not funny ... He is a murder....

My spin to Harold

I do find it troubling that you point to it as ok in regards to a governing policy. Tables turned and ten years down the road we have a socialist in the White House and they stir up rhetoric that anyone who opposes a green new deal either get on board or get out of dodge as fast as you can, where will you stand?

and Blondie

wow.... A little passive aggressive .... You need to add to the discussion vs. mud slinging and name calling

this goes on for another 20 posts.........fun times. (edit just to say thanks for taking the time to read, hope it brought a laugh)

Off to a good start, but this misses the mark. The divide is much, much more about urban/rural (and suburban) than it is about regions. Rural California is closer to rural Iowa than it is to San Francisco. (The Nunes our front should have told you.) The big difference is there is a greater percentage of urbanites in California than there is in Iowa. Signed, a Midwestern Liberal.

It most definitely is counterproductive but that doesn’t mean it will not be a correct statement at some point. I’m in the same boat you are with family I love but are just.... breathtaking misguided to put it nicely.

but the “ if you support trump doesn’t mean you are a racist” ship is loaded and starting to sail. It’s sad and depressing and I hope your thought process eventually wins, but each racist tweet, round up, ban, chant, etc makes me believe your idea unfortunately won’t win out.  Our country needs help

More like midland to Lubbock but yes.

Ive been up in northeast minnesota they past few weeks. Iron ore mining country. Basically the only part of the state outside of the twin cities that historically votes blue due to the unions. It's definitely trump country now.

Well, I have family exactly like yours.  I don't believe them to be "racist" as any of us would normally define it.  But, they are a little too willing to hand-wave away that part of Trump's persona.  For that, I am suspicious.  Bigotry can be subtle or overt, it can be expressed or suppressed.  I have thought long and hard about my Aunt and her kids and the ease with which they support this guy, and I don't like where the trail of crumbs leads me.  Am I calling them "racists"?  No, and I didn't say that in my post, either.  It does give me pause, though.

Sure, because he doomed the boundary waters for millennia so that a couple hundred of them could have mining jobs for the next few years. Seems like a fair trade...

Good stuff, Brickhorn.

Focusing only on racism is a mistake in dealing with Trump and Trumpists. In essence, you can't really prove what's in somebody's soul if they don't flat out state it.

Trump in action is more easily damnable. The lies. The graft. The declarations about who is and isn't an enemy of the state. The disastrous turn in the relations with our staunch and traditional allies. The idiocy. The sexual assaults. The income tax. Foreign influence from Saudi Arabia. His party's refusal to protect the election process.

All of that and more is on the record. You can roll the tape. There'll be more tomorrow.

Don't abandon the accusation of racism. I believe he is a racist and worse, but I don't want to bogged down in interpretation of action when clarity of action makes a powerful case.

Back to Brickhorn, I believe his assessment of the Trumpists he's observed. They enable Trump's racism by supporting other policies or just, somehow,  liking the guy. I can't account for that, either. How could anybody like Donald Trump?  I think they like things easy. Muslims are killers, it's clear. We've seen it on the TV. Keep 'em out. Foreign countries take advantage of us, let's get even! Oh my, we were coddling North Korea. Then we almost got in a war with North Korea, but Donald saved us.

People of the soil. You know the rest.

I can’t speak to other rural areas where Trump is popular, like the Deep South.  I tend to think there’s real racism at work there.  Same goes for Texas.  Trump support here is different than it is in the rural Midwest.

And no, not everyone in the rural Midwest is a Trumper.  But there is a unique culture there that has adopted Trump, despite his seeming incompatibility with their espoused principles.

This is correct.  The urban/rural divide is the line of demarkation in America and it permeates everything from politics to consumer products to the TV shows they watch to where they go on vacation, etc.  The urban/rural schism crosses every demographic.  White people in cities have more in common with minorities and foreigners in cities than they do with white people in small towns, for example.

Don't downplay the role that HRC played in (very successfully) getting people to hate her.

Also, the people you describe (which could fit many families here), imo, do not consume quality news, if any news at all. They don't really care to learn the details of our government, imo. It's "Trump is my guy, turn off brain"  for them. Doesn't matter if Trump's policies harm them or not.

Her role in that was actually small. She was the target of the hate engine the moment her husband became a front runner to win the presidency.

She was a robo candidate who was not easy to warm up to if you were neutral, but the hate engine made neutrality just about impossible.

Peak 2019.  California passes an unconstitutional law that will be and should be struck down by the courts in response to a constitutional crisis.

Yep.  Stupid reactionary law.  And it will be struck down.

I disagree.  It is important for dems to fight fire with fire.  Although this will get struck down by SC, it is valuable to get the SC on record to set limits on what is allowed cause I guarantee you the repubs will be pushing the boundaries in other states.

The only way to fight the SC’s illogical decisions is to box them in.  For instance, the dems should make a congressional district where you have to attest that you are a democrat to be included, then let it get taken to the SC.   Wait..that’s unconstitutional?? Why?  Cause you can’t exclude based on political affiliation?  Oh, so then extreme politics CAN be a basis for striking down gerrymandering...got it.   Then keep taking the repubs tactics and take them to the extreme  and force SC decisions limiting such actions which they will only do if it benefits dems.
