Best Pocket Knife?

retread

Recommended Posts

I’ve owned three Chris Reeve knives. Small Sebenza, large Sebenza and one other that I can’t remember the model number. The shape didn’t work on the other one so I don’t own it anymore. The two Sebenzas are drop point and I’ll keep for life. They are really nice.

I don’t carry them daily like I do a lot of the Benchmade’s I have. I prefer a deep carry clip and I don’t want to get a custom clip just to get it to ride lower in the pocket.

I don’t regret buying one (or two) but it does make it easier to justify other more expensive knives.

General purpose knife - I don’t like having to go to the kitchen crap drawer, the workbench, or back to the car to fetch a knife to cut something.
Plus I like the switchblade auto opening feature, as my current cheap knife is kinda clumsy to open & close.

I have never carried a real knife before, just a little tiny Victorinox on my keychain.
Now am considering this medium size  Kershaw for EDC, but I know nothing about them.
What say y’all?

I tried to buy this knife from optics planet and they cancelled the order. The rules for shipping auto knives across state lines are grey to them. They would not ship to Texas unless I was military /LEO.

I am fully expecting to get flamed for this post... but.... (cringe) has anyone bought a William Henry pocketknife and felt it was worth it? I kinda want a FU pocketknife to carry for dressier occasions.

Chris Reeve Mnandi has been my suit knife for a decade now.

If I were you, I’d find a maker I love/trusted and buy commission something custom.

WH does very little for me.

Depends. I own one that I purchased many years ago. It has a Damascus blade, with mammoth tooth inserts on the bolsters, and a diamond insert. They are high quality knives that are well made with presentation boxes. They also have appreciated to those that value them.
Are they practical? I don’t think so. I carry a Case doctor’s knife.

On our way back from Yellowstone, we swung by Golden Colorado

The Spyderco factory outlet was worth the trip.

They of course had everything on display.

After I checked out Sal Glesser (owner, creator) came out as I was trying to discuss the kitchen knives to my wife and he told me: “if you get no other knife, you should get one of these (Counter Critter). I give these to several restaurants in town on the condition I can come take a look under the scope every three months and check how they’re doing…..” so I did.

I ended up with a SpyOpera, Salt 2 Green in Wharncliffe and an Enuff 2 in leaf blade. Along with some other paraphernalia.

After a few bourbons last year I bought this knife. The next day I had some second thoughts on spending that much on knife but a year later it has become my favorite knife. It's Oklahoma legal but opens just as fast as my automatics. But best of all it just feels and looks great.

Yeah, every time I saw these on knife sites I blew them off. They look funky.

Then I held the SpyOpera and really liked it.

I never would have bought one had I not seen it in store.

How were the prices at their outlet store?  I know you can find their knives a helluva lot cheaper onlline at places like Blade HQ, Amazon, etc. than on the Spyderco website, but was thinking that maybe the outlet store offers real bargains.  Don't think I'd be able to get out of there without buying a few things like you did.

And is that Enuff 2 in VG-10?

Prices are not great. I think everything is 20% off MSRP which is higher than you get at online retailers. Which makes sense. The ones I bought had added discounts (salt wharncliffe was a discontinued, SpyOpera was open box used at a knife show). Plus I am a veteran so I got an additional 20%.

If it weren’t for the added discounts I probably would not have bought anything.

They have two events a year where they sell blems that have huge discounts. One such event is next weekend for first responders and military, the other event is in November for everyone.

I would not go out of my way expecting a huge discount.

The big reason to stop is to handle knives you can’t find anywhere else. It’s not often you get to see the whole catalog available to fondle.
