Bingo.

Thousand dollar flights and hotel rooms for this game?

On the other side of the country from both fanbases?

Terrible location.

THis.

You know how I know some of you have never been to Santa Clara?  Because you don't grasp this.  It is a colossal, jaw dropping pain in the ass to get there.  Neither SFO or Oakland are convient at all.  There's nothing to do and it's hideously expensive. There's no Burbank that allows you to just drop in and go.

Not surprising the ratings are like this - Sugar/Rose on New Years Day - good ratings. Other Bowls not on New Years Day - not as good. That will likely not change so either the CFP has to strong arm the Rose/Sugar games into moving (fat chance) or just deal with it.

Yup. And this is just another reason to expand the playoff: rather than fiddle-fuck around for nearly a month and having the semis just shy of New Year's and the NC game well after, use the December Void to have the pre-title rounds and play the NC game exactly on the time slot that Texas' Sugar Bowl just took on 1/1. The bowls suck and they've been the single largest impediment to CFB's evolution, but the New Year's tradition does provide a good tool for them to use and they're just wholly trying to re-invent the wheel.

LA and PHX should be the only West host cities and given where college football is stronger, these should likely be the majority host cities for this game: Atlanta, Charlotte, Dallas, Houston, Miami, New Orleans, Tampa. Travel needs to be a big consideration for this if they want ticket sales.

Yeah I never understood the North Cal. Area in general either. There's a reason that there was a 31-year gap between Super Bowls hosted there, and it would have been longer were it not for the fact that the first one had a fucking local team in it.

I am curious if you are younger than me (48).  I hate the NFL product for a lot of reasons, but the primary one is the rushed, helter-skelter, flowless play.  There’s no tension or drama that isn’t resolved in 3-4 minutes.  It just feels like football for the ADHD set. In contrast, college football gives you long stretches of “momentum shifts” and melodrama.

But all the 35 and below folks I work with whine constantly about how slow and plodding college football is and how much better the NFL style is.

52. Get off my lawn. I have no issue with the flow of CFB. I think the networks have fucked it up (I'm looking at you, ESPN) with their commercials at every possible break.

San Jose has a big airport within minutes.

A lot of people don't give a crap knowing that it's another rematch of the two best cheaters.  When most years you can count on the fingers of one hand the number of schools that have a realistic shot of actually winning the playoffs, interest in the title game is going to be lower than natural.

Cfb needs a salary cap for the SEC and SEC moral equivalents (Clemson, FSU, Miami, Ohio St, OU, etc.)  Bama being allowed to buy up half the coaches in cfb ain't helping either.  But every conference now is too corrupt to be willing to risk the NCAA actually policing them.

At least in all the other sports the playoffs are large enough that a sizeable percentage of fanbases get a shot to hope, and there's often a Cinderella to follow initially.  But when it is just 4 teams in 3 games, 94% 92%(adjusted for Texas Vicarious & Mechanical) have no direct rooting interest for any of the playoffs.

Tech executives and venture capitalists set the hotel and restaurant prices in the nicer areas of Sili Valley.  San Jose airport is decent sized but has terrible route density (direct flights to major cities only).  You're fine coming in from Atlanta (Delta) but that's the only airport in GA or SC with direct flights.  SJ has direct flights to more airports in HAWAII than it does then entire Southeast.

There are non-stop flights from ATL to San Jose.  But yeah, $1400+ rt at the moment.  $847 non-stop ATL-SFO.  Uber makes the crying about SFO-hotel and hotel-stadium somewhat overkill.  1-stop options from Birmingham and Greenville to both San Jose and SFO.  San Jose $1700 from Greenville, but the other combos are $1150-ish for last minute shopping.

Expensive, but let's not act like it's Around the World in 80 Days.

San Jose airport to Levi Stadium is 6.4 miles.

Fair enough.  SFO is only 31 miles, about the same as my house is to IAH.  The problem is that sleeping at the stadium is discouraged, and your drinking/eating/fun options are limited in that 6.4 mile area.

But if you manage to fly in to SJC, Uber over to catch the game, then fly back out right after, then yeah, OK...

Yeah, the combination of Santa Clara, which absolutely sucks and is far enough from SF that you're not really taking a trip to SF, coupled with these teams having repeated numerous playoff appearances, plus Monday night after the holidays and kids back in school= this is what you get.

The Rose Bowl on a Thursday night didn't have an empty seat that I could see for Texas-Bama in 2010 BCS championship.  Guess it's the Bama/Clemson/ESPN overkill meh factor plus exorbitant cost of getting, staying and dining and drinking there.  I agree with the guy above who said Tuesday morning work time sucks big time.

I don't understand why college football and basketball have embraced Monday night for their championship games.   This is especially problematic for football as the games last so long.  If I were them, I would introduce Saturday or Sunday night championships.     People are ALWAYS looking for a reason to throw a party but not on a Monday night.    If marketed correctly, they could challenge Super Bowl #s by holding the game on Saturday evening.

This might be bad for other reasons, but I would hold the semi-finals as early as possible.  Perhaps even as first 2 "bowl" games in mid-December.  And yes, hold the games at the home field of the #1 and #2 seeds.   The NCAA can still run the event and pocket the profits to share among all of the schools like they do now.   This change allows fans of the two finalists to plan their trip to the championship game.

Different era - that wasn't when they had playoff games back-to-back weeks.
Someday I'd like to have the problem, but I doubt it will happen in my lifetime. Perfect world, for me would be playoff games in the Rose Bowl and then NOLA - I would die drunk, happy, and infested with STD's.

some parts of the south Bay are quite nice and Santa Clara University is one of the best looking campus in the country.  It's close to Santa Cruz and Monterrey, hills, forests, ocean... not too bad.

Santa Clara suX at hosting the PAC12 championship game.

What made anyone think that it deserved a National Title Game?

I guess the superbowl was successful there, but they won't host another SuperBowl now that LA and Las Vegas will have new $Billion + stadiums.

Hell, I'm sure either LA or Vegas will probably steal the Pac12 championship too.

Pac12 probably won't have their CCG game in a state with no Pac12 presence, at least i hope not.

Pac12 fans don't travel well, especially for UW vs. Utah.  Maybe if it was Stanford-USC it'd be a lot different.

College hoops is worse. I tuned in to see the beginning of the Texas-KState game last night and it took damn near 15 mins for Tech-WVU to play the final 45 seconds.

No, CFB is still making money hand over fist. People are just bored by the prospect of the preseason #1 and #2 playing in the Inevitabowl. There’s nobody to root for, no outcome that sounds exciting.

Mostly, I think people are tired of Bama.  Plus Bama fans weren't wealthy in the first place, so they aren't going to take what is a "once in a lifetime" trip every single year.  They also don't generate very many bandwagon fans or haters like a Notre Dame does.  Same can be said for Clemson.  Their even poorer and smaller fanbase already mortgaged their mobile homes for the first 2 games of this 3 game series, and that big upset win in game 2 pretty much insured that they will watch game 3 from home.

Not to mention the fact that this will be the 3rd neutral site game in a row for these teams.  Only the most rabid and wealthy fans will hit all 3 games.  I know the bowls will never let it happen, but only the Championship game itself should be neutral site.

Forgot about that one.....How does the CFP view the potential gambling issues? Vegas tends to have somewhat cheaper flights that certainly to SFO or LA but know the hotels get really pricey for big events out there. Bet they will let the NFL settle in for a couple of years and see how that goes before making a run at the CFP.

The Pac 12 MBB tournament is in Vegas this year.

The Pac 12 will do what it takes to make $$$$.  They're hard-up for it.  LV is pretty untapped in terms of big college sports events.  If the Pac 12 tournament does well, I wouldn't be surprised to see it become a site for more events (Pac 12 FB championship, NCAA tournament, a major bowl game).

I don't think that's correct. Clemson isn't near Alabama when it comes to enrollment -- it's probably a third of the size -- but the alums and fan base have money and some of them have lots and lots. Clemson is a very good school academically-speaking as well, something Bama can't say. Bama's fan base shakes out a lot like OU's -- a substantial number of the hard-core fans are mouth-breathing rednecks who haven't spent a single minute on either campus.

The Rose Bowl is also 30 miles from LAX but you have 10 million more options on lodging and food then you do in Santa Clara. I have a MUCH bigger problem with the venue then I do what day of the week it's on.

Other than the actual stadium, my trip to a game here was one of the worst sports experiences I have had.   Getting in and out of the area around the stadium was an absolute nightmare.  Just a terrible spot for a stadium.

26.4 miles from NRG to IAH but you have a giant fucking city in between with lodging, food and a rail line that goes from downtown to the stadium.

BINGO - All year Saturday is college football, and the best games are played prime time Saturday night. This game should kick at 8:05 pm January 5, 2019.

Is CFB too afraid of the NFL first round playoffs, because I'm thinking that the NFL could live with a noon kick and a 4pm kick and free up the evening (sorry 'boys fans).

It also doesn't help that the game is being played not in a college football hotbed; pick a city that embraces college ball - Dallas (Cotton bowl, Jerry's world), LA (Rose Bowl, etc), Phoenix, Miami, New Orleans. Sure it's a nice stadium, but that doesn't make it a college football destiny.

That stadium needs to be banished completely from anything other than 49er home games.

Pac12 championship if there hell bent on a neutral site should be in Vegas, since at least its a cheap destination and you will attract fans avoiding the empty stadium at a conference championship game embarrassment.

Any west coast national championship or playoff game should either be the Rose Bowl (obvious reasons), Arizona (proven history of doing big games right) or again Vegas for the reasons listed above.

Used to be the casinos would not make a line on any sporting event in the state of Nevada.  Not sure if that's still true.

The flights and lodging are really a huge plus for Vegas.  I flew in and stayed there then drove a rental in for both of VY's Rose Bowls.  Easy and fun.

TrapMetrics (TM) Cunning Plan, with W.O.P.R. variant:

2018/2019 version, ICELAND MAXIMUM HEAVY scenario (all bowls wiped out, pre-emptive strike)

T+1/T+2: rivalry weekend (just like this year)

Friday 30 November / Saturday 1 December: Conference Championships

Friday 14 December (1 game at 8pm eastern) / Saturday 15 December (3 games at 12/4/8 eastern): Round 1, seeds 5/6/7/8 host on campus seeds 9/10/11/12

Thursday 27 December (2 games at 4 & 8 eastern) / Friday 28 December (2 games at 4 & 8 eastern): Round 2, seeds 1/2/3/4 host on campus round 1 winners (DRAWN)

Saturday 29 December: semifinal pairings drawn not seeded, then neutral sites determined based on NFL playoff picture / schools negotiation

Friday 11 January (2 games at 4 & 8 eastern): round 3, seminfinals

Saturday 12 January: CFP final site determined based on NFL playoff picture / schools negotiation

Saturday 26 January or Saturday 3 February: CFP final

talk tracks:

cede the playoff weekends to the NFL

at least 10 days between rounds for the away fans to get their travel together

still only 3 neutral site games

KILL THE BOWLS

Between trips to Pasadena(for our game), NOLA for the rematch with LSU, every opener in ATL and Arlington(except FSU and Wisconsin), my "extra" savings are tapped out. It will be some time before I can truly afford to go to a major game. I do plan on making the trips to Austin and South Bend for those games but will drive for both.

They don't have to do that.  New Years Day should be college football all day anyway.  Move the semifinals back a week.  Move the Fiesta to New Year's Eve.  Move the Sugar and Rose to 12 and 3 pm Eastern on New Year's Day, and finish the entire college football season with the CFP championship game on the same night.

Also cancel all the shit bowls.  30 teams max should go bowling/playoffs.
