I've had a rough past couple weeks.  After my last long bike ride 3 weeks ago, I had an issue with a recurring roid.  Had to stop biking.  Last week, had it removed and haven't been able to ride for the past 3 weeks.  I'm on the mend now and should be good to go for race day.  Hopefully I'm recovered enough over the next couple weeks to get a couple more training rides in before race day.  I can still run and swim (taken the last 6 days off - follow up appointment tomorrow with doc a week after removal).  It's been a literal pain in the ass.

Went to doc for follow up on Wednesday and got the clear to run and bike. Went to the gym yesterday to lift and went on a 9 mile run this morning. Felt amazing. It was 63 with low humidity. I don’t have my bike with me as I’m visiting my parents this weekend. I’ll venture onto the bike Monday or Tuesday and ease back into it. I’ll probably do a 40 mile ride next weekend then start the 2 week taper. Race day is 3 weeks from Sunday.

@Clintonaldo, Chattanooga is next weekend, right?

2 weekends away. I ran 20 on Wednesday and have swam a bunch this week plus 2 spin classes. I am up to 30 miles of running so far.

I wanted to do one last big brick tomorrow but it might be raining. If I can ride I will ride 60 and run 10. If it rains I will run 20 again. Water temp here is 77 so it will be wetsuit legal as they always find somewhere to measure to get it to 76 and we have some chilly mornings coming up.

I’m just ready to get it over with. It’s been fun but I am anxious. It’s going to be hard to taper for 2 weeks so I might just do a week taper.

You really didn’t lose anything much with your injury. My best advice is to bike bike and more bike.

Water temp in Waco is 84 so quite a ways to go before its wetsuit legal there. It’s going to be hot next week with no rain on the horizon so river isn’t going to cool off much. I’m cool with that as I don’t really care for swimming in a wetsuit.

My parents next-door neighbor just did IM Wisconsin last weekend and finished 9th overall. He said it was an insane bike course up in Wisconsin with over 6000 ft of climbing. He did Chattanooga last year and finished 3rd overall. I talked to him for a bit this evening and he has some friends going up to TN and racing. It was nice chatting with him. Thought that was pretty cool. Small world.

Got back on the saddle Monday after work for a short 45-minute ride.  Did an hour this morning.  Soreness in the legs feels good.  "Surgery" if you want to call it that has done it's job.  Knock on wood but I think I'm healed.  Taking the QR out this weekend for a good ride on the road and keeping it off the trainer until after race day.  I'm getting nervous.  I know I'll do fine.  I think it's more mental right now than physical.  Doc said I can get back in the pool today so I'm heading to the pool in the morning before work to get a long swim in and knock the rust off.  I'll be in the pool 3x per week until race day.  It's nice to be full go again.  Just gotta get through another week of hard training then taper it out.  Already done my long runs and long bricks.  I may do one more shorter brick (25 mile ride + 6 mile run or something) before race day just to calm the nerves.

For a 70.3 I would only do a week taper. Make sure you get your bike serviced and sealant in tires refilled.

Great brick session this morning. Took the QR off the trainer and went about 31 miles. Started around 7:15 and got nervous about traffic so headed home not quite ready to be done. I could have definitely ridden the whole race distance. This thing flies in comparison to my road bike. Went for a quick 4 mile run right after. Completed that 4 miles in under 33 minutes at 8:09 average. I really have to slow down right off the bike. It doesn’t feel like I’m running as fast as I am because my heart rate is already at 110-120 while on the bike.

@Clintonaldo are you wearing carbon plates shoes for Chattanooga? I’m debating to use the vaporflys or the novablast. I’m leaning to vaporflys but I’m not sure. Probably won’t matter much as it’s only a half marathon but I’m curious as to your shoe selection: speed or comfort?

I uses to be strictly Nike and then starting switching up some. The Saucony Kinvara Pro’s were carbon plated and they hurt my feet and I thought I broke my foot and then after 100 miles they felt great.

I’ve had luck with the New Balance Rebel v4 and they aren’t carbon plated but have enough bounce for me and are super light. I’m a guy that races in what I train in. I don’t overthink it with different shoes however I will when I try and qualify for Boston next year.

This time next week I will be in my lane, moisturized and thriving.

I’m kind of getting emotional about it.

You’ll do great man. I’ll be monitoring your progress.  If they stream it, I’ll have it on. Rooting for you bud!

@Clintonaldo

How you doin? Nerves gone?

Feeling good and I won't be able to ask for better weather. It is raining a ton here and they are spilling a ton of water over the dam right now to make room for all of the rain. I still don't expect the swim to be as fast as last year where they were dumping out 40,000 a second. It will probably be closer to 20,000 which will still be decent. The 70.3 was 13,000 so I can still have a sub hour swim.

I go to check in at 1 and then I will swim a little at the Y.

I appreciate it. I am ready for that cold beer to hit my lips Sunday. I am curious if I will be emotional.

I was thinking about what it's going to be like to cross the finish line in Waco.  It'll probably hit me when I get to the finish line area.  Granted, it's not a full, but the preparation required and commitment that I've given it and it all coming together is enormous.  I've been training for this for like 7 months.

I think it'll hit you.  You're dedication to it and it all paying off.  Enjoy that beer.

I’m sure you will get a little emotional as you have put in the work also. My first words after my first 70.3 was that there was nothing half about a half Ironman.

What the fuck? Why?

edit: just read the announcement. That really sucks man. Very sorry. 😞

I need to get over it. They didn't have a choice as the tributaries that feed into the Tennessee were already stressed and some of the rain stayed longer the past few days. It rained 4 inches last night at my house and will rain for awhile today. I am sure I will be disappointed until race morning. Panama City has a full first of November but I really don't know if I want to spend another $,1000 on entry fees. I really wish Ironman would offer us a small discount but they won't. I am going to see how I feel after Sunday and make a decision.

I think it's bullshit that they won't even offer deferment or another slot at a race that has entries available.  I thought they did do that a few months back at another north america race.  Maybe Oceanside?

They did that at Oceanside because they never should have attempted the swim. Ironman is a business and you know it’s a risk when you sign up. My buddy at the airport said he saw a good crowd trying to get flights out. I am too cheap to walk away from shit like that b

Same here.  You could do the bike and run and then sign up for IM Florida as well?

Thinking about it. I need to clear my head. My buddy who did Kona said 6 weeks might not be enough rest in between and I haven’t swam in ocean

Very sorry.  It really is a kick in the nuts.

Given that IM Florida is only 6 weeks away, might be tough to recover.  The bike probably wouldn't be that big but combine that with two marathons would be very difficult.

Thanks man and I appreciate it. Still disappointed but it will be fun tomorrow. My ride home already has the car beers chillin in the car cooler. Sub 6 on bike and sub 4 run. I could probably average 20.5 on bike but saving legs and hanging around 19

You got it! I did a 45 mile bike this morning. Felt nice. No run after. I’ll do an 8 or 9 mile run tomorrow then officially be in taper mode for the week.

Salt intake and calorie intake was good this morning as well.

What time does the bike start? I’d like to see if I can stream it.

So age groupers start at 8:42 and we go in numerical order with 2 riders leaving every 5 seconds. They will be taking a rack of people at a time. I won’t be waiting too long.

Big congrats to @Clintonaldo on completing Ironman Chattanooga! Great job dude!

I was in a dark place mile 13-20 and had a lady grab me before I walked into traffic as I was bonking. I even slowed my pace down on the first 13 and still ran a 1:51 ish. There are 4 big hills that aren’t a joke. It rained all fucking day and it was cold and windy. It really poured in the middle of run and I started shivering. My one piece of advice is bring your own running gels. It’s never really affected me on the 70.3 but the Maurten’s they were passing out were non caffeinated and that fucked me up. I thought about you in the middle of my 6 mile walk. I was like yeah he knows I’m feeling it.

Ohhhh man. I saw the splits at around mile 15 and I had a feeling you were bonking.

I hear you on bringing your own gels. I’m bringing Gu and going to grab a few maurtens on the run. I’ll do Clif bars on the bike for the first two hours then switch to gels.

That really sucks about the weather. How’d you get through the bonk? Fruit and coke?

You earned that beer! Congrats again!

Pretzels and chips and water. They finally had one aid station with caffeinated gels and I was good. The salt had done most of the work at that point. The longer you walk the harder it is to start back running so I kept giving myself landmarks to get to.
