I had to bite the bullet and go see a doc in the box today for my back. Doc did his assessment and said I had a strain in my lower back causing back spasms. No shit doc, give me a shot and some meds. I gotta get back to training.

Tri people, what’s a decent speed for the bike section of a half IM? And what, if you don’t mind me asking, what do (or would) you roll at on flat terrain with no wind? My routes in Houston have people, turns and other random slow downs. There’s only a few sections I can do with no or minimum reasons to slow down.

For your first I would say 3:10 overall which would be just under 18 mph average but it also depends on the course.

Thank you.  I’ll almost certainly do Galveston, which is flat and straight.  I can do 18 for at least an hour but am not sure how well I’d hold up after 30 or so miles at that pace.  Only one way to find out.

It’s like running. You have to go longer to go faster. Ride a few 60 miles to get a good base. You will be faster on race day from adrenaline. Main thing is also doing some bricks. I will do a lot of 60 mile rides and 10 mile runs before Nooga 70.3

I have my eye on the Cowtown on Feb 23.

I registered for the Cowtown full marathon (Feb 23) and my training has been going really well, had a great 20 miler last week and planned for a 21-22 miler today, and then I sprained my ankle during my run this morning.

giphy.gif

There was a car sticking out a little bit at an intersection and I ran slightly out of my path to go around it and my foot planted awkwardly where the asphalt met the curb. It was maybe a 1” lip but somehow my foot/ankle fully rolled over and now I can’t put any weight on it. It’s fairly painful and swollen so I’m doing the whole RICE thing. The Cowtown seems out of the question and I’m moderately concerned that my ski trip next weekend will be screwed.

Nothing much I can do about it except let it heal and hopefully find another race later in the year. It sucks to feel marathon ready and not get to run the race.

Big oof man. So sorry. Hey, 3 weeks is plenty of time if you rehab correctly. Stay off it, give it a week of no running with rest, ice, compression, elevate. You may be surprised how you feel next weekend. I did the same thing last year as well on a 16 miler. Didn’t run for a week, went out and did 18.

My back is finally starting to feel almost back to normal. I’ll probably do one or two more rest days then get back to the grind. My wife and I were talking and we may run the blue bell half in late March. Anybody ever do that race in Brenham?

Speaking of injuries before a race, i sort of strained/pulled my hamstring running at memorial park yesterday with the Galveston half next week.     Sucks being old.     It doesn't feel too bad, so i dont think it is a tear, but it does hurt.    Guess i will be in super taper mode this week and just stay off of it and do what i can next week.   Annoying.

That's a tapatalk glitch.  When you use an actual number, it blows up like that and you cannot edit it.  I keep forgetting and that's the result.

I did 65 and 75 miles this weekend.  If the internet in general can be believed, I need to work on RPMs because my fastest miles are higher gear/lower RPM.  My fastest miles yesterday were sitting on the highest gear I have for a few miles.
My legs are pretty sore today.  But I'm not signed up for anything and still have zero Idea how to swim so there's plenty of time to work on biking.

I thought (nor considered, just thought about what it would be like) about running after a long bike ride and I'm not there yet.  Too tired.  I'm thinking starting bricks at 20/6 or 30/6.  That sound about right?

I don't think a week off is going to do you any harm.  I'd try a shakeout for a couple of miles and wouldn't worry about those other little runs.

I have not done the Blue Bell half before but if you're in pearland the H-Town half is pretty fun.  It starts at MinuteMaid, goes through downtown and then on the running trails along White Oak in the Heights.  Not that big but a lot closer to Pearland.  I think its March 23.

No longer in Pearland. I’ve done the Pearland half twice and Houston half (in October) and the Houston full (in January) twice.

I moved to Tyler about 4 months ago.

Galveston will be flat, but there is a good chance that half of the race will be into the wind.  I find wind can be more demoralizing than hills.

Fucking wind. Hadn’t really considered that.

I did 40 at 18.2 mph this morning and it was fine. I naturally turn about 75 rpm and it will take work to increase that. At a higher cadence my brain wants to shift higher. Is higher cadence a better or advisable thing to do or is it more necessary? Cause I like 75.

On another note, I switched to tubeless a couple of weeks ago and, after some growing pains, am really coming around in these. I had a puncture today and had sealant spattering my shoes and bike. I stopped and found the leak but by the time I had the repair worm ready it had sealed itself. No issues the rest of the ride.

Edit: the Tapatalk fix worked - thank you.

And one more question - do you all ride on the drops?  If so, is that a significant/worthwhile speed advantage vs. the hoods?

Well that’s awesomely fast. Congrats. Are you on the highest gear you have? That’s where I’d have to be to maintain 22mph plus at low cadence.

Not the highest but closer to highest. I honestly never pay attention and go off of feel. I will be faster this year on the bike and am interested if I can average close to 23 and then run a 1:35 half. There is a two mile bike climb up chickamauga that really slows down the average.

Well, I guess it’s time to join this party. I’m about to turn 55 and have run and played tennis among other active pursuits all my life. Life got in the way the last 6 months and I’ve done basically nothing. My daughter is a senior in high school and captain of her varsity tennis team but not a runner. No pics assholes! She asked me to train with her to run a 10k Easter weekend. So the training starts tomorrow. Pray for me. 🤣

You can probably run that already.

Cadence on the bike is in the lower 70s. I think I averaged around 19 mph in Waco. I was completely unprepared for the fresh chip seal they had put on the main road in Waco for about 25 miles of the bike course. It completely wrecked me.

Back is feeling a lot better and I’m slowly getting back into the training. I’ve ridden twice and ran once this week. Off today and probably run tomorrow, brick Saturday and swim Sunday.

Finished day 1 of getting back at it. @Clintonaldo you gave me too much credit, lol. Did a full 10k but combination walk briskly/jog lightly. Did jog a straight 2 miles in 22 minutes at one point. Way off of my old 27 minute 5k pace. I have a lot of work to do and a lot of sedentary to undo. Fortunately we habe 10 weeks to get ready. You guys that do the Ironman stuff are awesome. Don’t know that I’ll ever have that desire. Right now I’d be happy with getting in good enough shape to run a half marathon.

55 is the new 25. Once you get a good fitness base, even at 55, you could do a 70.3. Just start slow. Do a sprint, then an Olympic distance.

The swim part of any tri, sprint, Olympic, 70.3, is the part that concerns me. Grew up in the water on lakes skiing and swimming so comfortable in the water. But even swimming the 750 meters in the sprint seems daunting. That seems like it would be challenging. Like anything though, it’s all about the training.

For me, I did the swim in 50 minutes in Waco.

How did you handle Lake Brazos? I took sailing on that stretch in college, and we had to capsize on purpose to learn to recover and everyone ended up covered in fire ants from the 10 minutes we were in the water.

I was the same way growing up and thought swimming would be easy and boy was I wrong. What I learned is I had a breathing problem in the water.

I was the same way growing up and thought swimming would be easy and boy was I wrong. What I learned is I had a breathing problem in the water.

Couldn’t agree more with @Clintonaldo on this. Once you learn how to breathe properly, it gets a lot easier.

How did you handle Lake Brazos? I took sailing on that stretch in college, and we had to capsize on purpose to learn to recover and everyone ended up covered in fire ants from the 10 minutes we were in the water.

It wasn’t bad at all. Granted we weren’t in lake Waco but in the river to the east of the dam. It was very smooth and probably the best swim I’ve had not in the ocean.

Maybe I’ll work up to a tri down the road. For now I’m going to work on getting my daughter and I ready to run the full 10k. After that I may look at a half marathon later in the year. I love the thought of being able to complete a tri. Not many people in the world can do what you guys have accomplished.

I appreciate you saying that and I will admit I am a little lucky with my job and some genetics but you can do it too.

Question: In most marathons there's a bunch of folks running 5-6 hours.  Are there a lot of these types of athlete's in a 70.3 or, by the time you get to that types of race, with the expenses, the multiple disciplines and training schedule, is it mainly a bunch of nutters?

Yes. There are many from all walks of life and fitness level. I remember my first 70.3 I was nervous and saw a bigger guy with his wetsuit pulled halfway down ripping a cig waiting to swim.

Definitely. I think the cutoff is 8:30 from when you enter the water for a 70.3. There are people who can finish in 4:30 and people who barely make cutoff.

I’m a 56 year old formally morbidly obese back of the packer.    I’m a 7hr 30 min 70.3 guy.     It’s fun.    There is always someone slower and fatter than you.    Just enjoy the process and don’t stress about it.

Every fast tri guy I have ever met has been cool with me.   We all suffer out there and are all pushing as hard as we can.   Whether that is 4 hours or 7

Us back of the packers just get more  value for our money.  I get 7 hours on the course, people like Clint get to be on the course for far less time :)

I registered for the Cowtown full marathon (Feb 23) and my training has been going really well, had a great 20 miler last week and planned for a 21-22 miler today, and then I sprained my ankle during my run this morning.

How’s the ankle?

I remember last year I was eating my lunch after the race and people were still coming off the bike and I looked at someone and said those poor bastards as it was getting hot. In all seriousness, I absolutely have a ton of respect for someone who takes a little longer and is out there pushing themselves. You are only racing yourself and it is a privilege to be out there.

First race in a while. Wanted to break 20 and got close. Not sure if it would have made a difference but off the line I was caught in a real slow group and had to zig and zag quite a bit.
