I’m on spring break in an Rv with a bum knee. No bike and no running. I can feel my bony ass getting fat - even though I’m not.

Great training weekend - 2k swim after work Friday, 11 mile run Saturday, 2:15 bike + 7 mile run Sunday. Sunday workout felt great - no fatigue at all. Salt and nutrition is a lot better this time around. Taking it easy today. I hit 3 bike workouts, 2 runs, 1 swim and 1 brick last week.

This race prep is different than Waco. I’m a lot less nervous about it. It’s weird because I don’t think I’m doing enough training because I’m not exhausted all the time but I know that if I stick to the plan, I’ll be ready.

Like an idiot did speed work 2 days in a row and now pulled a hammy. I did run a 5:33 mile.

Oof.

I was telling my wife yesterday that I feel like I’m back in the zone for training after my back and toe issue. I’m in a good spot and making progress. Bike is getting better. I did some speed intervals for the first time a few days ago and did speed work running yesterday. Easy bike this morning for 1:15. Big weekend coming up for a long ride and run.

Did my first century on the bike today. Coincidentally the eight year anniversary of being diagnosed with stage 3 colorectal cancer. Now I need to find motivation to swim, and do bricks.

2:45 on the bike yesterday with a 6 mile run after. 11 mile run this morning. Swimming tomorrow. Grinding it out.

@Clintonaldohows the hammy?

Felt good last week and then I ran faster than I should have yesterday and aggravated it. I’ve been doing some 2 hour spin sessions and swimming a lot. It sounds like you are ready for your race.

Not quite ready yet. I still need my long ride (3+ hours) and one more long brick, then I’ll be set. I’m about 6 weeks out and training is going a lot better this time around.

I need to get into the pool as well. I’ve been concentrating the majority of my training on the bike this go around. I have neglected the pool, but I need to swim more.

You can spend hours swimming to gain 1 minute so to me it’s not worth it. Today was a rest day so I swam 1,400 at a 1:58 pace.

I don’t remember how much you tapered last year but for a 70.3 I would just do race week.

Correct, taper for Waco was just race week. I did one shorter session of each discipline Monday - Wednesday.

Your rest/easy pace is my normal swim lol

Thanks. It’s not pretty but I got it done. There are guys where I go that can lap me in 200 yards. It’s very humbling.

I slept 3 hours last night and drank myself silly watching Tennessee beat Kentucky but still managed a 30 mile ride and a 2 mile run

That’s a feat in itself.

three hour bike this AM, 6 mile run after. Twelve mile run yesterday. Probably swim tomorrow. Depends on how I feel.

Doing more runs after biking really is paying off. That and better nutrition this go around.

Signed up with a coach today.    Goal is breaking 6 1/2 hours at La Quinta/Indian wells 70.3 in December.     If i don't finish within that time, its obviously all his fault, not my slow fat ass.

If you don’t mind me asking, what kind of coach did you sign up with? In person or virtual? What all will he do for you?

It’s virtual, but he is relatively local (in Texas) and will meet up with me every few months.    Weekly zoom calls (when I want or if we think needed) , custom plan with my life schedule and will adjust as we go, he will see all my power stuff from bike and heart rate etc for each workout.   Also has a local swim coach that will come to the pool with me a few times to make sure I’m relatively efficient - I have scar tissue on a shoulder and rotator cuff issue that we will try to figure a way to swim well without hurting that more.

is it needed for my level of ability? No probably not.   But I do better with some accountability vs just getting a training peaks plan and it’s not all that much money in the big scheme of things.

Just curious do you know his finish times in his triathlons ?

So in a half, for us old folks I'm guessing a mid-to-decent time is about 3 hours bike, 2 hours running and, well, I have no idea swimming.  Is that about right?

That’s good for most people. I finished 5:29 last year and should be 5:15 this year. My first year at 40 I finished at 6:30.

With everything you’ve been through I think the worst thing you can do is set a time to finish for your first one. You need to focus on having fun and being out there. You will learn so much for your first one and the second will be the place to put a time on finishing.

i'm about 45 min swim, 3:15 bike  3 hour run.    Obviously hoping to be faster.    I was hoping the coach would tell me i could buy a new bike and that will knock off 30 minutes, but he says probably not.    I may fire him already :)

Just making sure it’s not some worthless fuck that isn’t better than you. I can give free coaching and be better than 90% of the paid coaches. I am excited to see your progress. I am 8 weeks out and did a 2 hour ride on spin bike and ran 4 miles this morning.

This right here. I learned a lot from just going out there and making a dumbass out of myself. Don’t overthink it and listen to your body.

My first one was a 50 minute swim, 3 hour bike, and a 2:28 run. Transitions sucked as they were so far from the water exit and bike entrance. I think I was 6:31 or something total. I’m HOPING for a sub 6 this go round in 5 weeks. I can definitely take time off that run and that bike. I’ve really been working on the bike for this race and I’m thinking I can shoot for at least a 2:45. I’d also really like a sub 2 half marathon.

For the first one, I didn’t train properly. I ran too much and didn’t do enough brick workouts. I feel a lot more confident this time.

Enjoy the first one. There’s absolutely nothing like putting in the work and seeing that red carpet. My FIL caught probably the best video of me raving I’ve ever seen when I crossed the finish line and he’s seen me finish two marathons and multiple half’s.

You have to go through the failure and experience the pain for things to make sense plus Basil is a cancer survivor. I don’t care if he comes in after the cut off. He will be a finisher in my book.
