Apologies, since I am sure that this has been asked before but... I have a couple of electrics and a decent Fender combo tube amp with some modeling capabilities.  What would you say is a must purchase for someone who has never bought a pedal before?

I have a Fender Strat and an Epiphone Dot.

I think the only answer is “the pedal that inspires you.”

That said, I’d lean toward a pedal that covers a function that’s fairly ubiquitous - like-

-clean boost/treble boost

-gain/overdrive

-delay

A couple other ubiquitous categories would be modulation (chorus/phaser/flanger) and reverb.  But I’m assuming your modeling amp already has some reverb and modulation in it.

It’s a golden age of pedals.  In each category, there are a hundred manufacturers- from cheap Chinese knock-offs to unique novel designs.

They haven’t been the same since their founder Nicholas Harris was killed and Howard Gee left. They were my favorite pedal company. Will be interesting to see where they go now...

Catalinbread Effects Announces New Ownership

Portland, OR, March 16, 2020—Catalinbread is announcing a change in company ownership with Northwest natives Kyle Sears and Brandon Rush purchasing the company this month.

In addition to being touring musicians and recording studio owners, Kyle and Brandon have been making music together on a professional level for over 15 years and are progressively-minded gear aficionados.

Given their local roots, passion for gear, and well-established presence in the music industry, Kyle and Brandon are excited to take Catalinbread to the next level. Under this new ownership, the Catalinbread crew will be able to take its collective passion for sound further than ever before.

It is important to Kyle and Brandon that Catalinbread remains an innovative, hand-made, and locally-run pedal company. Their vision for Catalinbread's creative future will work hand-in-hand with the mission of the company and its core values, including the search for vintage and esoteric pieces of gear, and outfitting them with modern engineering for ease of accessibility.

Catalinbread has much in store for 2020 and beyond. The Giygas fuzz will be released this spring and the Epoch Boost will be released this summer. While Catalinbread will still be offering its full catalog, the next chapter's development is already in full swing.

From personal experience on that list, JHS Angry Charlie, or more specifically AT Drive, which is a suped-up Angry Charlie, and the Friedman BE-OD are some hard pipe-hittin' mofos with buckets of touch and nuance.

I was looking at that the other day.

Cool, but seems complicated af.

I've always shied away from things like that due to the learning curve.   I would rather spend time playing than learning how to work a pedal board.  But I may give this one a shot when it comes out.   I use two small, very different boards for the two groups I play with and being able to have one piece of equipment handle both jobs seems pretty cool.

I played electric guitar as a kid, but for the past 20+ years only acoustic.
I have a nice old Strat sitting in case I'd like to play, but haven't kept up with guitar electronics since the 90s.
I (think) I'd like to get a small amp and some sort of multi-effect processor, just for messing around at low volumes. Something that can give me basic effects and different sounds from blues to metal, etc.

What's a good way to go?

You should stick with acoustic and tell me how much you want for the old strat.

Well.. nice to me anyway. It's just a standard black strat with a white pick guard. 1989-90 model, made in the USA.   Serial number E 966 XXX if that means anything to anyone.

30 year old American strat? PM me.

Those late 80s up through early 1990 Fenders are just short of custom shop in attention to detail.  Interesting time in Fender history.  They were hand building them trying to get the company going again after CBS sold.  My early 1990 Tele (N_9 serial number) is an absolute world beater guitar, even compared to my AV 52 and 64 teles.  Pictures of it upthread.  Fortunately for Deej, it's only worth about tree-fiddy.

Ever heard the old saying, a picture is worth 1,000 words?

I’d just get a Katana amp. Has all the effects and amp models built in you’d ever want. People here swear by them.

I have been glancing at that Boss Katana 50 for a few days and late last night one was posted on Facebook Marketplace that looked practically brand new for $170.

I didn't send a message about it and then today, I couldn't find it, so I guess someone snapped it up. New, with tax and shipping, tops $250... and then it's value immediately falls, because it's not new.

I’ve never had an equalizer pedal, like the old boss ge series and was wondering what you guys use them for. I saw a video a while back taking about them.

I was wondering if you’ve had success say tweaking the mids to make a single coil sound like a p-90 or something?

I have this Empress pedal.  It's a bit over-the-top - lots of knobs, and it can be hard to see what you're doing when it's down on the floor.  But will get you where you want to go (Miles, I don't think it could trick you into mistaking a humbucker for single coil or vice versa ... just too many other things in play, like the attack of the note, the sustain, clarity, etc.).

I think I mentioned this elsewhere... I have a little TwoRock combo amp, and I couldn't be more impressed with their engineering.  They just got soooo many things right:  easily-adjustable input impedance, a tube reverb with separate send/return controls, and an insanely useful EQ section that lets you extend the lows by pulling the bass knob, push the dirt in the mids by pulling the mid knob, and add presence and top end by pulling the treble knob.

That little TwoRock has just spoiled the shit out of me when it comes to EQ on a guitar amp.  So now when I use a different amp, I feel like I struggle to get it dialed in like I want.  That's what lead me to the Empress (they make really cool shit, IMO).

It's probably a lot better for a studio setting than a live rig.

Probably belongs in the unpopular opinions thread, but this is what I got after I sold all my pedals

Boss ME-80 Guitar Multi-Effects Pedal | SamAsh

It doesn't do a good tube screamer, it doesn't give a sinusoidal tremolo, and overall tone isn't as good as my old pedals chained together on a 3' long 1x12 plank. But this one fits in a little gator bag instead of a 61 key keyboard case.

I do miss my TS-10 and Supa Trem 2 though. A LOT.

Not a pedal question but until they create “Instrument Cable porn” thread....
What happened here? I assume that’s a blown fusable link in my cable. I play only through small 15w practice amps with volume set low, usually through head phones.

So anyone enjoying a treble booster.  Had my eye on a beano boost for a while now, but I always resist spending the $$$.  Seems like it really helps things stand up against a band.  The rub is that I have realized over the years that fuzz pedals don't really fit with what I play and the TB seems just fuzzy enough to make me regret getting one.

Talk me out of it.

Buy it used, sell it used if you don’t like it.  You’ll pay $20-$30 for an unbounded demo.

My treble booster is my favorite pedal. Combines really well with OD and distortion pedals.
