Russell Crowe (Gladiator) over Tom Hanks (Castaway).  Crowe's expression never changes during the whole movie while Hanks is the only one on screen and he keeps our attention for the duration.

Since this thread got bumped, I noticed this comment and agree that Hanks did excellent work. Some years are packed with quality nominees in a category and Gladiator and its lead were a solid movie and actor that I enjoyed, but Cast Away was great from beginning to end. A story within a story, a man facing not a ruthless emperor but the most ruthless and capricious ruler of all of us--Nature, and the ending which is a beginning. Tom Hanks performed award winning acting in that role.

TCM is in the heart of their 31 days of Oscars right now. Yesterday was something to behold, and if I didn't have an early start this morning, I could have binged for 10 hours straight. But man, when you look at these winners, the turd in the punch bowl is obvious.

The fact that JFK isn't listed as a comedy still baffles me

I love JFK, even acknowledging that Oliver Stone is lucky if 35% of his script is factually accurate.  What is true about the movie, regardless of whether Oswald really acted alone, is that JFK's assassination was the beginning of the erosion of our country's trust in the government, and what the American people know and see about our government is very different than reality.

Plus one of Kevin Bacon's best lines ever:  "You don't know shit 'cause you've never been fucked in the ass!"

Can I say Everything Everywhere All at Once yet?

You can but I would ask you what movie would you have put over it for BP and don't say Top Gun: Maverick because there's no way that would've even been close to winning. The other options were All Quiet on the Western Front, Avatar: The Way of Water (BRO!), The Banshees of Inisherin, Elvis, The Fabelmans, Tar, Triangle of Sadness, and Women Talking.

A personal one after rewatching Pulp Fiction this weekend, Samuel L Jackson losing Best Supporting to Martin Landau in Ed Wood.

I would have picked Banshees but would have been good with most of the other noms too.

The Hurt Locker over Avatar was dumb. James Cameron made a cinematic masterpiece using 3D technology, and made the only movie ever worth seeing with those shitty glasses. The amount of effort that went into making that film was tremendous using 3D cameras and tons of motion capture. It made such an incredible viewing experience, and he absolutely deserved Best Director that year.

Sandra Bullock won Best Actress over a bunch of people whose performances I didn't watch.

Carey Mulligan- An Education

Meryl Streep- Julie & Julia

Gabourey Sidibe -Precious

Helen Mirren- The Last Station

The King's Speech winning BP over The Social Network or Black Swan.

Did the Blind Side win anything?  If so it goes on this list.  Terrible movie.  Preachy Christian movie schlock.

Good one. Besides the reductive racial stuff/white savior narrative, the football stuff was so fucking stupid.

Michael Oher is a teenager in Tenn, but apparently has no concept of football. They teach him how by telling him to protect the QB like it’s his new white family. There is a scene where Sandra calls the HS head coach and he answers and talks to her on his cell in the middle of the game. Perfectly fine moment of silliness for a Hallmark movie, but I still can’t believe anyone ever took that shit seriously.

Too bad he didn’t care about writing an actual script or making a good movie.

How so? Because they prayed at the dinner table once?

I'm not defending the movie, but to claim it as "preachy Christian" anything seems to me like you are looking to be offended.

Movie screamed lifetime achievement award for Bullock in an obvious down year in the category.

Why the hell would Bullock merit a lifetime achievement award? She’s nowhere near the level of a Nicholson or Streep who deserves some sort of lifetime recognition.

I say this as a huge Bullock fan. I generally like her movies. And as a personal aside, I stood in line behind her at the Starbucks off 5th and Lamar in 2001, and, if consent wasn’t in the equation, I would have taken her as my wife then and there. She’s even more attractive in real life. And she smiled at me!

But as an actor she doesn’t have a ton of range. She was Southern Christian Sandra in The Blind Side. Gravity? Sandra in space. Speed? Bus Driver Sandra.

Not sure why any Oscar voter would give her a nod based on a lifetime of work. I really do think it was just a down year and she won by default, not because she has this great Oscar-level body of work and just happened to lose several years to other nominated actresses. And maybe a few Oscar voters have also run into her at a Starbucks.

Agree.  Not trying to trash her but she is not HOF material.
